Nick, while researching other topic I came to view you video about Ape Cave. I am member of the local caving club and the NSS. We in fact do view tree molds has true caves, just another formation process. Tree mold fields can be quite complex and I know of at least on case where travel to a much larger cave is facilitated by going down a tree mold.
Your taking us all on such vivid and unbelieveable "rock" excursions have become my quiet day adventures. If Washington State is not paying you loads of tourism money... someone should give them a quick kick! You've become my geology instructor for a taste for learning that exceeds my rockhounding trips. Mt St Helens is definitely an area to visit. I have been to the caves many times and on up to the Plains of Abraham on the same side of the mountain. Amazing place. Nick, have you ever been to the cinder cone at Schrieber's Meadow up on Mt Baker. It erupted around the same time as the Ape Cave flow. The cone is hard to find but the andesite flow that came with it fills the valley going up to Schriebers. Worth the drive.
When I was a geology student in 1970, we did a field trip to Pisgah Crater in SoCal, east of Palm Springs. It was a standard initiation to run the new students through the lava tube there. It had quite a surprise at the end.
I grew up just 10 or so miles away at yale valley been through the cave several times also been to and explored Oly Petterson cave about 2 miles south of ape caves havent been in the caves since 79 i enjoy all your videos keep up the good work

I lived in cougar part of 1950-51, went to Yale grade school in part of 1st and 2nd grade, fished on the North Fork Lewis before Yale dam, and distinctly remember my step father driving us up to the end of the road (seemed like it) to visit Oly and see the lava beds. Take care!
We used to hike up there in the winter and have the place to ourselves. Even hiked through by candle once. Last time we had to hike to the upper entrance since parks gated and regulate the lower entrance for summer now.

Crawling in the tree trunk is kind of terrifying. I also went back in 2006 and remember seeing signs everywhere warning people to watch their turns because it's like a series of mazes. One wrong turn and you might get stuck at a dead end with only one way out: backwards.
What are the chances this lava tube will be filled with lava again someday? How often does Mt. St. Helens have a magmatic eruption where the lava is of pahoehoe type?
1st time I went, was after closing. just my friend and i. we did both upper and lower, climbing over the fallen roof. it was a pretty awesome experience. climbing out the little exit into the night forrest. hiked back to the truck. 2nd time, I and my neighbors went, nowhere to park, tripping over people. left after about half hour. very neat place
I always had assumed the name was related to sasquatch. In Native American mythology, there probably is no single place more closely associated with sasquatch than the area surrounding Mt St Helens. There are an outrageous number of sasquatch-related Native place names in the triangle between Rainier, St Helens, and Adams. Like, thousands. If memory serves, the 1950s incident that brought "Bigfoot" to the attention of the white public took place in that area as well. Real or not, that is where the stories come from.
The main cave is very inviting. It's lit up and placarded with information and usually pretty busy with people walking around. Like a big wine cellar. If you want to get stuck in some miserable little crawl tube you kinda have to go search it out.
I did the tour once. Most latter visits were without the paid staff present. To find whatever wildlife that could survive what my species did to them. Ghost-like, you never observe I had been visiting the lava tube. Moving quietly like a mild volcanic vapor. Feel free to wait for more molten heat

An intense adventure for the whole family! Took us nearly 3 hours to do the upper cave.
