Yes, it is a real thing on the hair color. I was extremely blonde when I was little until around 11/12 it started turning darker. By the time I was around 18 I had med. brown hair. Of course, now I'm old and it's turning gray. Love this song!
Cats in the cradle is the name of an old child’s game that is a string tied in a circle, and passed from two hands of one child to the two hands of another child in different configurations, Trying not to drop or tangle the string. The Silver Spoon, Little Boy Blue, the Man in the Moon, are all from nursery rhymes. So the whole chorus is an ode to childhood. Really quite beautiful.
This man was so down to earth, when you saw him live, it was like you were hanging out listening to your friends singing - he engaged the audience in such an intimate way. A couple of days after the seeing him live, driving home from work, someone called into the radio station I was listening to and asked if they'd play "Taxi" in MEMORY of Harry Chapin. . . I was stunned. He had been killed in an car accident on the LIE. Tragic loss. . .
First saw Harry in person when I was a DJ on my college radio station in 1976, and immediately became a fan, got to meet him a few times as he would meet and greet after concerts, signing merchandise that benefitted his organization, World Hunger Year (WHY). He was always advocating for others and encouraging others to get involved as well. Many of his concerts were benefits, and his credo was something that he said often,,,,"When in doubt, do something." Thanks for the reaction, well done.
Harry is phenomenal! I grew up listening to him. He did a lot for Hunger & his foundation is still going strong today. They were boots on the ground after the recent Hurricanes in the south.
This song really hits home for myself and my brother. Our dad was always working so hard for better lives for us. Then we got busy with our work and families and he had free time for us. Your dad sounds like a wonderful man!
'Taxi' by Harry Chapin was a hit song. Another story song. Opening first two lines: It was raining hard in Frisco. I needed one more fare to make my night
My daughter was born with almost black hair, at 6 months she was a carrot top, by the time she was 2 it turned bright blonde then gradually turned mid brown. Now it's purple 😂
As a father of a son about your age, I can tell you that every call you make to him now is incredibly special to him! This song is so relevant to me personally, having grown up with a father that was a merchant marine who was gone on average about 8 months every year. And I thought I would do so much better with my own son but I now realize that we are not as close as I would love for him to be with me. Don't let that be the case for you, show your dad now how much he means to you, there's no guarantee of tomorrow for any of us!
Another great singer songwriter & storyteller. I had his "Greatest Stories Live" double album. "Cat's In The Cradle" is his most famous piece. "Taxi" was another big hit for Harry Chapin. Ten years later he followed it up with "Sequel" showing what happened to the 2 people in the story. He had so many great songs such as "W·O·L·D", "Mr. Tanner", "Mail Order Annie", "They Call Her Easy", "I Wanna Learn A Love Song", "30,000 Pounds Of Bananas", "Shooting Star", "Halfway To Heaven", "Six String Orchestra", "Dreams Go By", "Remember When The Music", "Story Of A Life". We lost him too young in a car accident in 1981 at the age of 38. He left a great legacy of music.
You are so blessed to have a father in your life that you look up to Mine left when I was 4, and I have only seen him a handful of times. I'm 62 now. Oh, and yes, my hair was blonde up to about age 4 or 5 and now it's just plain old brown.
Beautiful! Such an iconic song. Yes, the hair thing is real, as well as sometimes the eyes also change color. I was born with jet-black hair, black eyes, and olive complexion. By the time I was 3, I had bright blonde hair, blue eyes, and fair skin. Glad you're feeling better! Thanks so much for another great reaction! ✌💙✌
Great reaction! I cried so hard for my dad who I lost in 2020. We were close, and he used to come and stay with me (with mom) for four months as it was too cold in Upstate NY where they lived, and they would pay my rent those months and they would do everything they could to make my life easier and be useful as they were retired. They spent the Holidays with me! I loved when he would pay his guitar, and he was a HUGE Harry Chapin fan, and was so sad when Harry died so young! Harry's son was close to his dad's very good friend Harry Belafonte after his dad died. Michael Jackson was one of the people to get the Harry Chapin Humanitarian award in 1995.
Yes. We as toddlers are called towheads because on the lightness in coloring of the strands. By around 12 the head hair begins to really brown out unless the blood color is a double gene from both parents (I think). Anyway, good question. Also, try W.O.L.D. Another great Chapin song.
The hair comment cracked me up. Yes it’s common. When I was young my uncle would call me Cotton Top. My hair was very blonde. Practically white. In my twenties it began to darken. Now you know. 😂
I was a blond baby and toddler, light to medium brown haired child, and am now a medium to dark brown haired adult. My brother was brown haired from babyhood and ended up with the super dark brown, almost black hair that both my parents have. It's a thing. Though imagine their surprise when both of them, with their very dark hair and brown eyes popped out little blond blue-eyed me as their first child. 😂
I had blonde hair until I was about five and then it started turning reddish-brown. Saw Harry Chapin and his brother in concert just a few months before he died. He was fabulous and came across as very humble.
This is my living dads favorite song- I asked him a while back if it reminded him of his dad and he passively said yes but that’s not all. This song is so cleverly written it could be the father, the son of the grandfather.
6:20 -- I was born a blonde white baby girl. By the time I was in late high-school-early college, my hair had turned auburn/red. At age 70, now I'm grey, but the red is still there.
Im 53 now (2024) and this is the very first popular song (radio hit) i ever remember hearing. I was 3 or 4 and this song remains one of my oldest memories.
I too had blonde hair when I was a kid and now it is brown/gray. Being a parent is tough. Being a kid can also be tough. I didn't get to see my father a whole lot until I was about 7. Even though I was somewhat of an athlete, and he had been too, we never really played much ball together that I can remember. He did, however, provide for us and taught me a lot of other very important life lessons. I don't regret any of it and wish others could be as lucky as I. As we all got older, I called every day for many years (and after he passed, I did the same with my mother). I am so glad I did, even though it was not convenient at times. You can't get that time back if you pass it by. Cody Johnson has a similar country song out now..."Until You Can't". Peace, Love!!
I was born a blonde, my hair turned to brown. He looks exactly like his dad and I look exactly like my mom. People would come up to us thinking we were twins, may she RIP.
My father is 81. I'm 55. We're both retired. I still have to set a notice on my phone to remember to call him a coupla times each week. My girl is 20. I really worry about making her feel guilty when I ask when she's coming home. I just want to see my girl but I know she's out there kicking ass in the real world.
"Taxi" is a masterpiece. His name is pronounced "chay pin" with a hard A if you want to know. His music played on the radio for a section of my childhood and there isn't a better story teller. I'll be back for Taxi. 😄
Yes lol, it's real! Blue-eyed blonde babies can turn into Hazel eyed brunettes! I'm dark for my family but my sister was a blue-eyed blonde, blonde eyelashes and all. By the time she turned 10 her hair eyelashes and eyes had changed color.
Absolutely it’s common. I had blond hair as a kid. Not as an adult. My oldest had almost white hair it was so blond. It took years to change but it did as well. Very, VERY common.
When I was in the seventh or eighth grade, I noticed that the principal of my school no longer had blond hair, so I asked her why and she said it got darker from the sun.
I was born with bright red hair, by kindergarten it was so blonde it was almost white. It slowly darkened as i got older, and now it is brown. So, yeah its pretty common, lol. Love this song though. Great reaction!! 😊
When you said (read) "Oh, so this was written about a man in a previous relationship" , "No wonder he put it aside" I just about spit my drink out. That was funny.
Yes the hair color can change. I have a cousin that was born with jet black hair and when she was a toddler her hair went straight to blonde with black ends until her mother had it cut off.
The change in hair color is real and also eye color my immediate family all have blue eyes My son was born with blue eyes but by his first birthday they were brown
Lots of white babies are born with blonde hair and their hair turns dark when they get older. Take this song to heart whether it's your father or mother.
OMG! If my parents had lived only 2 hrs away I'd have seen them at least once a month! Unfortunately, once I flew the nest I never lived that close - I mean multiple states away because that's where the jobs took me. 😢 They're both gone now. As is my sister. I wish I could have spent more time with them. Make that drive as often as possible, young man. I'm not even close enough to visit their graves. There's so much I wish I could say to them! Don't let that time pass you by. You never know what life is going to bring your way. ❤
Go meet with your gather again whenever it’s possible, as you cannot possibly know how good that makes him feel! When my two daughters and six grandchildren decide to come and see me, it a very gratifying moment when that actually get here! They are e little less than two hours away! I’m going to see them Monday!
I had straight blonde hair as a little boy. Then puberty hit, and it just turned brown and curled up. I dunno man, but the brush I used to use stopped working! One day, I just gave up and threw it away...
I have a story but it’s Chay-Pin. I’ll watch the video… Beautiful reaction, this story/song hits home to a lot of people. My mom and dad split when I was about 6 and he died when I was 14, so no hope for reconciliation. Oh and my hair started almost blonde and somewhere around 5-6 I darkened to a darker brown. Now I’m getting gray, lol. My story, I started college in Queens NYC in early 1974. Every so often there would be a singer/band/comedian that would perform on campus. One Wednesday at noon Harry Chapin was giving a concert in our theatre. I did not know Harry at that time. My friends did and since I had no classes insisted I go. So I bought my ticket and went. I did have American History at 2pm. Well, Harry doesn’t do short shows and I was mesmerized. I cut class figuring, history ain’t changing and I’m watching something special. I don’t remember if he did Cats, I think it was yet to release but he did a lot of songs including Taxi and WOLD about radio. Two songs you must explore. There are more in this rabbit hole. Harry’s VW Rabbit (Golf) was rear ended on the Long Island Expressway by a large truck. The car caught fire. He lived a modest life diving into his charity’s fully. His brother Tom, took over the charity and maintains it. He was a host of a TV series on ABC on Saturday mornings for kids. In my time I lost Jim Croce, John Lennon, Karen Carpenter and Harry Chapin. Enamored of all and all taken too soon for varying reasons. More have passed but these four were in my prime music time of my teens to twenties. The last three were in a four year span. If you read this I’m going to give you a name to look up on TH-cam. She’s a 21 year old, mostly unknown, singer musician. It’s her voice, she is like no one I’ve heard in 40 years. She doesn’t have a bunch but what she has, on her own and collaborating with others, is magical. If you choose to listen to her, you’ll understand the 40 year reference. Her name is Tori Holub (Hah Luhb) and that’s the name of her channel. I love how you explore the artists, well here’s a budding one. Joe
Yes very common for kids to have very light blond hair and it darkens as they grow up. Could be more common due to the region I live in, lots of Scandinavian decent. Many of my childhood friends were called "towheads" I don't think that's politically correct now.
My hair was basically medium brown (brunette) as a child and my hair became darker and darker as I neared my 20s and throughout my 20s. It was almost black. I’m 67 now so I go get my hair color (brown) put on every 4-6 weeks since my hair is becoming more gray! Lol
What goes around comes around. Check out Chapin's (pronounced Chay-pin, btw) "Taxi" next. And then the sequel to that song, appropriately entitled "Sequel". But call your dad first.
The hair thing is nearly anyone. As a black kid, my hair would get a little reddish through the summer, but somewhere over the years that stopped happening. Now it's just black (with gray mixing in).
Children born blond often have hair that darkens with age. It's called being "tow-headed." I was one, and my hair turned dark brown starting when I was 6. And it can cause problems when two dark-haired parents have a blond child. Genetics can be weird.
Some of the "barbarian" tribes that invaded Rome were Nordic, so there's a recessive blond gene amongst Italians. It pops up when and where it pleases. I'm a quarter Italian and as I went not prematurely gray, but white, I also went through a blond phase. I was really puzzled by it until other people of Italian descent explained it to me. I understand it's more common to be born blond and darken by adulthood, but is unpredictable.
The hair changes a lot. My hair was brown when I was born, fell out and was blonde until my late teens/ early twenties then it started getting darker and is light brown now. Most Caucasian babies are also born with blue eyes and they change to their permanent color by a year old. Both my kids were born with blue eyes, but my daughter’s changed to hazel. I have blue eyes and my husband’s are brown.
Hair does get darker as we age. Your Father wants to hear from you, he'll never say that but he does. Also, your Father should hear how you feel about him. My Father was in my life til he passed in 1989. I always hoped that I made him proud and have been told by family that I did. After my son became an adult, I realized I never told my Dad how proud I am of him. I pray he knows.
Most white babies are born with blonde hair, not all, but most. Yes it then changes as the age. I was blonde and ended up with red hair. It’s just a wild thing but true.
Great song😢. Gets me every time. ,50th anniversary of it hitting #1 in Billboard magazine this month. Taxi & WOLD are two more good storyteller songs from Harry😊.
Yes, it is a real thing on the hair color. I was extremely blonde when I was little until around 11/12 it started turning darker. By the time I was around 18 I had med. brown hair. Of course, now I'm old and it's turning gray. Love this song!
The hair thing is pretty common. My brother was a "tow headed" blonde as a child, but as an adult, it turned dark brown.
They say my dad had white hair for a while. He ended up with really dark brown. My son was white haired for a few years, now it's medium brown.
My hair was platinum blonde until I was around 9 and slowly darkened to dark brown.
It’s very common. I had very blonde hair and blue eyes as a kid which turned into very dark brown hair and darker eyes
I was a little blonde boy who grew into a dark haired young man and now I’m gray 😂😂😂

Yeah, that happened to me ...
Blonde to brown.
The song.... tears every time.
I miss him so very much.

Yes it was so tragic. He was a sweet guy.
Mac Davis was the same. There's just something very special about these down to earth musical poets & bards. ❤
Harry was a master songwriter/singer but above that he was a great humanitarian.
Harry Chapin died young in New York driving from his home to do a concert in New York City.
all time classic! ♥
First saw Harry in person when I was a DJ on my college radio station in 1976, and immediately became a fan, got to meet him a few times as he would meet and greet after concerts, signing merchandise that benefitted his organization, World Hunger Year (WHY). Harry is phenomenal! I grew up listening to him. He did a lot for Hunger & his foundation is still going strong today. They were boots on the ground after the recent Hurricanes in the south.
Chapin....Long "A", as in "cape". He was phenomenal.
I was born with jet black hair & it turned a light sandy brown by the time I was 5.

Wonderful reaction!!! Bless you for TOTALLY hitting it on the mark!!
Congratulations! 👍👏🎉❤️
You are so blessed to have a father in your life that you look up to Mine left when I was 4, and I have only seen him a handful of times. I'm 62 now. Oh, and yes, my hair was blonde up to about age 4 or 5 and now it's just plain old brown.

Yeah it’s a real thing. My son was very light blonde when he was young and now his hair is brown. We lost Harry way too soon to a car accident.
Looking after yourself is the most important thing and my hair went from blonde to brown and now it's a beautiful shade of silver 😊
Great reaction! I cried so hard for my dad who I lost in 2020. As a young boy, I had blond hair. By the time I got to college, it was dark brown.
The studio version of Flowers Are Red is a nice one. It's about the damage a bad teacher can do.
He also had a daughter in the music industry, Mary Chapin-Carpenter 🥰
No. He wasn't her dad. Her dad's name was Chapin Carpenter
@mzluna313 my mistake, sorry 💜
LOL It's a thing. Have four sons, two have dark brown hair from start to finish, two had blonde hair, that later turned medium brown as adults.
I had blonde hair until I was about five and then it started turning reddish-brown. Saw Harry Chapin and his brother in concert just a few months before he died. He was fabulous and came across as very humble.
My brothers hair was so fair as a baby it was almost white. It turned brown by age 5. So yes, it's common.
Circle of life. Enjoy your family now!
I was what they called....Toe head....pure white hair as a child. Now it's light brown....so yep it happens!! Lol
Another confirmation of the hair.i was light blond as a kid.then dark brown.now grey 😂
Such a storyteller! Listen to “Taxi” next!
Im 53 now (2024) and this is the very first popular song (radio hit) i ever remember hearing. I was 3 or 4 and this song remains one of my oldest memories.
This has always a heavy heart felt song for me. .Go talk to your father, we don't know what tomorrow brings
He didn’t live long. Such a talented man taken too soon from Cancer.
My son was a platinum blonde in his childhood. His hair is dark brown!
I too had blonde hair when I was a kid and now it is brown/gray. Being a parent is tough. Being a kid can also be tough. I didn't get to see my father a whole lot until I was about 7. I had blondish hair when I was very young. As I got older, it darkened to a dark brown. As I approach 80 years old, it has become "blond" again. LOL
Then THAT would be easy to color blonde. The grow-out wouldn't show such a demarcation. That's if you wanted too.
almost every person i knew that had blond hair when young now has brown hair it typically gets darker with age
I’m not crying, you’re crying!
My son’s hair was white blonde and now as an adult it’s dark brown.
Yep, I was white blond up until about age 5 or 6, then it turned golden...and eventually to brown.

Blue-eyed blonde babies can turn into Hazel eyed brunettes!
I'm dark for my family but my sister was a blue-eyed blonde, blonde eyelashes and all. By the time she turned 10 her hair eyelashes and eyes had changed color.

You should take a deep dive into his music! So many great songs!
Yes, it’s quite common to be very blonde as a child then get darker as you grow older. Everyone in my family, except for a red head, was/is like this.
Yes the hair color can change. I have a cousin that was born with jet black hair and when she was a toddler her hair went straight to blonde with black ends until her mother had it cut off.
This is such a beautifully but sad. Love your reaction!
Yup. My hair was almost blond up to 3 or 4 then began to darken to brown over a few years...
I was blonde as a child but now I am gray. But I was brown in between!
Crazy it happens to all of us
The change in hair color is real and also eye color my immediate family all have blue eyes
My son was born with blue eyes but by his first birthday they were brown
It’s a very common thing…,myself and all three of my kids, for starters.
Lots of white babies are born with blonde hair and their hair turns dark when they get older. Take this song to heart whether it's your father or mother.

Lmao. Yes it can be a real thing
Yep my son had blonde hair as a child. It’s almost black now at age 20
I had straight blonde hair as a little boy. Then puberty hit, and it just turned brown and curled up. I dunno man, but the brush I used to use stopped working! One day, I just gave up and threw it away...
My brother was blond almost white as a toddler. Dark brown hair later.
Listen to "Taxi" next...
Yes I was born with blonde hair, and it turned brown when I turned 20.
I have a story but it’s Chay-Pin. I’ll watch the video…

Joe
She's the closest to her i've ever heard. The same vibrato & lower register to her voice. I know exactly who you are referencing.
Lol
I was a very pale blond child, then red-brown as adult. Harry died in an accident before his son was grown.
You should check out "Taxi" also. It's a great story-telling song also. It's very deep.
For Harry's fun side (even though it's still deep), listen to "30,000 Pounds of Bananas"
Children born blond often have hair that darkens with age. It's called being "tow-headed." I was one, and my hair turned dark brown starting when I was 6. And it can cause problems when two dark-haired parents have a blond child. Genetics can be weird.
Blonde hair usually turns dark after puberty.Or around them
Some of the "barbarian" tribes that invaded Rome were Nordic, so there's a recessive blond gene amongst Italians.
I prefer his live versions to studio. His “Greatest Stories Live” album was on loop whenever we were traveling.
I had light blonde hair until I was about 4. Between 4 and 6 it went to dark brown.
Yes white people’s hair does change! My daughter was platinum blonde as a baby now at 24 dark brown.
when my daughter was born she had blond hair and we're Hispanic but as she got older it turn to brunette
Most white babies are born with blonde hair, not all, but most. Yes it then changes as the age. I was blonde and ended up with red hair. It’s just a wild thing but true.
I was born with black hair, then it turned auburn. Finally I was a brunette.
Great song😢. Gets me every time. ,50th anniversary of it hitting #1 in Billboard magazine this month. Taxi & WOLD are two more good storyteller songs from Harry😊.
Yes going from blonde/light hair to brown is common
Yup, living proof of that right here
Yes I was a toe head and by my 20 light brown
I lost my dad almost twelve years ago. Take every opportunity to be with your dad. One day, he won’t be there.
