Michaela Jill Murphy is an American voice, film, and stage actress. She is known as the voice of Toph Beifong in the animated Nickelodeon television series "Avatar: The Last Airbender". Michaela's voice has been featured in several animated movies, including Meet the Robinsons, Over the Hedge, The Ant Bully, Finding Nemo, The Emperor's New School, and Brother Bear 2.

So the original design for Toph is what we see as the earthbender silhouette in the show's intro, and they ended up using Toph's original design for Roku's earthbending teacher (and eventually Bolin too), and made fun of it in Ember Island Players. The character was always gonna be blind, but what changed was the gender and of course not being so muscular. The creators wanted her to be a jock, but it was head writer Aaron Ehasz who convinced them to make Toph a young girl with a smaller stature, a shift that would create an interesting contrast between her physical presence and her incredible powers. Nickelodeon resisted as they preferred a male character, but eventually relented.
The library's design is based off the iconic Taj Mahal in India, which was commissioned in 1631 by the fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan to house the tomb of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal! It houses his tomb as well. If you look at the illustration of the library at 6:46, it says at the bottom "萬知堂神祕图書館", meaning "Wan Shi Tong's Mysterious Library". Wan Shi Tong and the many depictions of owls at the library references Athena, Greek god of wisdom, as the owl is her symbol. On the domed calendar's mechanism are the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac, which represent the years, and this is unusual in the Avatar world since most creatures are hybrids.

100% best episode/two-partner in the series. This episode turned me from a casual viewer to a lifelong die-hard fan. Also fantastic voice acting with that line "I'm sorry Appa."

Season 2 of Korra confirms the Professor died in the Library. Jinora goes to the Library, which is now fully in the spirit world at that point, and we see the Professor's skeleton surrounded by books.
Also, the tea selection for today sounds really dang good. I love Mango flavoured drinks so this one really sounds tasty to me!
True, but it's unclear WHEN he died. It could have been one day after this episode, or fifty years later. We have no clue. We just know he died eventually.

Sokka is super intelligent, just more on the simple side. He has a gift of breaking down complex ideas and problems into simpler chunks, which is probably also why he picks up new skills so quickly.
Calendula is the name for a genus of different marigolds native to western Europe, southwestern Asia, and the Mediterranean. The most cultivated is Calendula officinalis, aka the common marigold or pot marigold. The creatures at the beginning are supposed to be groundhogs, though in real life, prairie dogs act more like that! Prairie dogs' means of communication is said to be even more complex than that of chimpanzees and dolphins. The animals have barks and chirps that communicate numerous messages. Many messages alert the colony about predators. Prairie dogs embed information about the predator's size, color, direction, and speed in a single bark!
The Misty Palms Oasis is based off the homeland of the Uyghurs, a Turkic group who lives in the Tarim Basin and Taklamakan Desert. The establishment of the walled town around an oasis is similar to the city of Kashgar. Architectural elements such as onion-shaped roofs, square houses, and streets with bazaars are common to the city of Turpan, which is itself centered on an oasis. The sandbenders however are based off the Tuareg of North Africa. I do get the Tatooine vibe though! And yes, the Fire Nation didn't want others to find out their weaknesses, so Zhao burned down the section while he visited the library since he stated it was there he discovered Tui and La's location during Siege of the North.
I LOVED Chloe!!! She was so fun to watch, and you both merge so well together! It would be amazing if she came back!
Braille is based on a system invented in the late 18th or early 19th century by a guy named Charles Barbier, which he called night writing. It was originally used to send messages that soldiers could read silently and without light.
One thing also to keep in mind is that the writing in the show is Chinese. Braille only has to encode the alphabet, which even for languages which extend it with diacritics, only hits somewhere in the low thirties. To encode the Chinese writing system in dots... Chinese has thousands of characters for bare minimum reading and writing fluency.
But Louis Braille adapted the system Barbier made to use for the blind.
@@delaneykeller1389 My point was the real life historical timeframe and the in universe context, not the purpose of braille. It wasn't invented until the late 18th century in real life, and while I'm perfectly willing to accept it could have been invented earlier given the proper environnent, I'm highly doubtful that the earth kingdom is such a supporting environnent for the invention of a system of writing for the blind. The base writing system is Chinese, which isn't a phonetic writing system, and has thousands of characters required for minimum fluency, negating any possible benefits of both of Braille's biggest improvements over night writing (namely, the system corresponding evenly to the conventional writing system in use in the culture, and reducing the number of dots per symbol to a number that can be felt clearly on the pad of a finger, both of which would only be possible with a writing system utilizing a few dozen characters, even modern Japanese braille, IIRC, only transcribes kana, not Kanji),

In legend of Korra, the professor actually appears when Jinora visits the library in the spirit world. Well in skeleton form.
Avatar was like my therapy as a kid. I watched it over and over and it always made me feel better when things had me anxious. I can't even guess at how many times I've seen the show. I even find myself saying the lines back with you when Toph says things :D

This episode has what I consider Michaela's best line delivery.
It sucks losing Appa this episode but I respect the risk the writers took for leaving Appa gone for several episodes! We feel with the characters the weight of losing him and the excitement of getting him back.
EPISODE 30 ALREADY?? WHATA JOURNEY MORE TO COME 🥰🌳 Chloe is such a sweetheart.
I loved you and Chloe's reactions, but one thing that surprised me was how critical Chloe was being about Katara not hesitating to leave the professor behind. I felt like it was a situation where even the compassionate Katara knew when to cut the crap, and was being wise and practical not to waste a SECOND trying to negotaite or even say goodbye at the cost of endagering her best friends over someone who's clearly made up his mind to die. Not exactly the best time to be thinking about "being nice". Just look at that possessed, half-insane + point-of-no-return look the professor has along with "I could spend an eternity in here". I never expected someone to criticize Katara for not being the most considerate person in a situation where they're literally seconds from being trapped forever. Besides, all she said was "Just go!", not some harsh thing like "Forget about him!".
When MJM mentioned the two tones for Hector Elizondo's voice, which I had not noticed before, for some reason it reminded me of the distinctive Shaggy / Scooby Doo whistle. (Try humming and whistling at the same time.)
11:20 I would argue that Sokka is one of the most Ravenclaw characters in the series (probably only behind Iroh and Bumi). Sokka’s type of intelligence is very Luna Lovegood coded. Just a very outside-the-box creative thinker. We see this expanded on in Sokka’s Master.
10:19 It's called overtone singing. It's not an echo - that's the same sound being repeated - it's singing two tones simultaneously at different pitches, creating a polyphonic sound effect. It's incredibly difficult to do!
22:19 I think you're referring to the pop-filter? A lot of people think it's to protect the mic, but it's there to stop pop-noises that mainly come from using P and B words. And yes, sound studios definitely have a smell. I think it comes from a mixture of bad air circulation and a lot of hot running hardware, but it's a comforting smell 😅

Would it be somehow more possible to get the showrunners on for an episode or two? Like, don't get me wrong, would love to hear from the voice actors...but...the two head writers, sharing little insights and tidbits into an episode. That would be amazing.
You know, Dante Basco recently did a promotional stunt for the upcoming live-action Netflix series involving a real-life version of Iroh's Jasmine Dragon tea shop from the show. A collaboration between Michaela and Dante featuring Dante's tea would be perfect.

As I heard it, Toph was always going to be blind, but originally Toph was going to be a muscular surfer dude type. That character design was kept and used as the earth-bender in the intros and went into the design of The Boulder.
It actually went into the design of Roku's earthbending master in season 3.
It also influenced a lot of Bolin's design in LOK

Braille was invented in 1824 but wouldn't be widely taught until the late 1920's to early 30s. So I would say no she never learned anything like Braille, at least until Korra time

I suppose I came late to the tea party but I'll dropping my comment anyways.
I was going to point out how similar the sand benders looks to the Fremen in their stillsuits from Dune. I wouldn't be surprised if the creators took some inspiration from there. And in the episode "Zuko alone" you clearly see that 19th century "wild-west" style in the earth kingdom villages while at the same time the shooting scene of Zuko facing the thugs looks so similar to those classical cowboy movies.
As I'm re watching the series I can definitely say these last 5 episodes are the absolute BEST ones I've seen so far, and watching your reactions is an awesome addition to the A.T.L.A experience.

Man, it's sad what happens to Appa in this episode, because the Library is one of my favorite things about Book 2. Heck, the episode even introduced my favorite character, Professor Zei, who easily made the decision to be sealed along with the library because of his love of knowledge. Also, Wan Shi Tong isn't even a bad guy, he just happened to be against what the team was doing,
What happens to Appa in this episode isn't sad for me because of what you like, but because it's animal cruelty, and dividing a family apart.
This episode wouldn't be many peoples best if Appa wasn't taken, because otherwise while it would be a very strong story driven plot, it would be slightly above many other generic ATLA episodes. The reason this one is so good and impactful is exactly why Appa was taken

Toph literally had no way of helping Appa whatsoever, even if she did let the rest of the Gaang die. Here's why
She can't properly sense the Earth so she couldn't see who were taking Appa and how
So even if she had chosen to try and help Appa, she coild have actually failed against the Sandbenders on her own, thus losing him and letting the Gaang get stuck in the library for who-knows-long, maybe forever

Another great episode. The library is a cool setting and wan shi tong is very creepy as well as being one of my favorite spirits. This episode is also pretty important as we learn about the eclipse which gets setup throughout the rest of the season. Pretty good episode.
9:13 I saw this fan art of toph learning braille, it’s obviously not canon, but it would be nice if it was. I think in legend of korra, they probably had braille, but it’s never mentioned, maybe old toph just has a hatred for books, and never tried.
Toph was originally supposed to be Sud, who would later be used as Avatar Roku's earth bending teacher. I believe the earth bender in the opening of every episode is Sud.

11:20 Here's the thing. When you think about it, Sokka's incredibly smart. He was the one who figured out how to control the war balloons, and he also helps design other technical innovations later in the series. He also comes up with several plans and strategies that work (or would, were it not for unforeseen issues).

Back in the 70s I had a good friend who was born blind [he had 3% vision, which means he could tell if there was a bright light in a dark room but that was about all] and I can tell you that he had no problem with blind jokes - now if the person telling them was making fun of blind people rather than being funny, THAT he would not have liked - but that's about the person, not the joke.
The Professor is seen in Legend of Korra in the Spirit World [which is where the library ends up] That is, of course, 70 years in the future - so he is, let's say, not in the best of shapes, but he is still there with the books.
So sad - Chloe told us about her job and 23hours ago we learned that she got laid off :(

Poor kid's entire culture was wiped out in a horrendous genocide, and he has to deal with a lot of guilt, self doubt, and fear, on top of stuff like young love and losing his oldest friend and last living connection to his culture in Appa 😢

Now this episode has the first moment of tension of many in season 2 or 3. This is how we realize the next seasons would be darker compared to the first one which is saying something
I often wish that Aang would've stayed with Toph while Sokka and katara did there search that way Appa never would've been kidnapped. I mainly blame Sokka for stalling and Aang for not staying with Toph even after encountering the sand benders.
The professor's skeleton is seen in season 2 of The Legend of Korra, still in the library (which is then located in the Spirit World).

I would think if an equivalent of Braille exists in this world, it would be held in the Library. Not that it would do Toph any good if she never learned to read it.
But, I suppose she could help develop it later in her life. That would be a cool thing to add to her accomplishments.
