From lf76: @terryweatherbee8564 Hi, Grief is an absolute pain to go through and is different for everyone, I have been dealing with it for 9 years now and I completely understand that my grief is different too yours. In regards to the therapist have you been seeing the same one for the entire time or different therapists? It may be worth considering moving to a different therapist if that is possible. Is it possible that one of the reasons you have not found a way out of the box is you are worried that if you move on and 'get better' that you will forget them or be disrespecting their memory in some way? They will always be with you, the memories you have will still be there, the love and compassion for them will still exist. It is ok to move on and feel somewhat better in your self. Think of it like this; there is a ball in a box (the ball is grief and the box is you) at the start the ball takes up most of the empty space, not leaving it much room to move. As time goes on the box gets bigger yet the ball stays the same. sanctuarycenters.org/blog/the-ball-and-the-box-a-story-about-growing-from-grief/ I would also like to add that we are here for you.

I took care of her up until her last breath, and I felt a part of me died that day too. I know somewhere out there she's looking down from above at me, while I try to make her proud in everything I do. I've been going to therapy consistently for the past 5 years and it's definitely helped, but there are days that get harder than others. I know what helps me sometimes is just thinking about good times, times that made you both smile, that connected you on a deeper level. It may help bring a bit more comfort. Regardless, no matter what, we're here for you always. You can always reach out to us and we'll be here for you! Stay strong <3
Easily their most well-known song. Layne called it the “obligatory crowd-pleaser” at his final live show. I live north of Seattle, and one night I heard it being covered at some local bar down the street. Hometown heroes.
This is yet another song I loved as a kid that I understand and identify with now at 28. It’s like no matter what I learn or do it’s the wrong thing, even if it’s the right thing. Someone else could say or do the exact same thing and get congratulated, while I, in the exact same situation, get punished. Ever since I was a kid with an abusive, stupid, father and would get beat for telling the truth or being right when he was wrong. The only change in the situation is I don’t get beat physically anymore and it’s just the world. Literally a coworker and I could come up with the same answer and they are right while I am wrong
From k2daizl: @Tunda2 Thank you for sharing your story friend. That sucks to be treated that way and I'm sorry you've experienced that. The first thing I thought when I read this is that this isn't your problem, it's theirs. Many people have a hard time being told the truth. I experience this with my mother still. I speak my truth, she doesn't like it because it makes her feel bad about herself, so then she gets defensive and then I become the bad guy. But here's the thing, screw that! You should still speak your truth. It's your truth. They can speak theirs, so why not you? I'll try to stay off my soapbox about society on this situation but there are people like us that see things that others don't see. Just look to history to see how many people were judged harshly or even killed for knowing something that others didn't know. So they were heretics. Society wants you in the box, to fall in-line. To not question things. So then when those of us that do question things and/or authority, then we are the bad guys. Personally, I'm cool being a bad guy now. Not a big deal. :) You sound like an honest person and have just had some bad experiences with people. There are lots of people out there that will hold space for you to speak your truth, even if it differs from theirs. That can listen and not make you wrong. I'm one of those people friend. I'm sure there are lots of others in this community that would be open as well. Sometimes finding the humor in a situation can be the best way for us to deal with it too. Be like a duck and let it roll off our backs with laughter. I do this all the time. Being outside the box is freedom in my opinion. It just means you might be a target at times but you sound like you have strength enough inside you to overcome that. I'm proud of you for reaching out. It takes courage to share. It takes courage to speak your truth. I appreciate you giving me the opportunity to connect with you. Reach out again if you need more support. We are here for you. KL
I’d highly recommend reviewing River Of Deceit from Mad Season, a supergroup with Layne on vocals. A live version is available on TH-cam from Seattle 1995.
I am of the Gen-X. Alice in Chains is or was an excellent band. I feel that the alternative scene exploded after Nirvana`s "Smells Like Teen Spirit" exploded onto the music scene.
The posers poster was in bad taste. It literally distracts from the message of breaking out of your chains. Its hypocritical to say help break the chains but then you pit chains on people. I get people have their opinions and can like who they like. Thats fine. But dont label others posers. They were all awesome.
Thank you guys so much for your feedback. Layne did 1 Album with the guitarist from pearl jam snd drummer from screaming trees. Listen to River of Deceit” by Layne and Mad Season. Chris Cornel covered it in 2015 with Mad Season members after Laynes Death Search for it. Most haunting telling song he ever sang
Hearing ALL the music that came out from this time, this genre, was almost too much to handle. I am raising my kids on the music from this time, and they love it as much as I do and understand why it's the greatest generation of music to come out. Being able to see all of these bands live, and more importantly, able to afford it, is why I have permanent hearing damage.
This song reminds me of the same message as Nirvana smells like teen spirit and it had the same splash. Then again the box you described I also heard it’s about censorship
There is NO SUCH THING as grunge. They are hard rock!! They HATED being called grunge!!!! Grunge is a term the MEDIA came up with to describe the music and the ARTISTS themselves because they didn't know how else to describe it. They thought the artists looked grungy so they called it that. WE DID AND DO NOT! When you call it grunge you are disparaging the ARTISTS!!! They hated that term and we still do. Plese stop using it. AIC is Hard-Rock. They say themselves in many interviews. They were from Cali when people think they are from Seatle.
i think kurt cobain said that he'd rather be called 'new wave' than grunge. i think he just didnt like the term grunge since it meant 'dirt' or 'gross'. nobody really liked being labeled that.
Layne actually revealed that this song was about his father being held captive in a Vietnamese POW camp during the war and his experiences that he related to Layne. (Hence the lyrics "Won't you come and save me") The sewing of eyes was about the fact that his father had to witness his fellow soldiers being tortured and killed while being held captive. Layne expressed a great deal of anger and felt that his father and Vietnam Veterans had been very disrespected upon their return from the war.
See. Cornell. Also spoke about this song about in the states being on a cow farm and how they’re treated. So maybe it’s a mix of both. Who knows for sure.
I'll always recommend the live version of Bleed the Freak from the Live Facelift VHS. That song has propped my mental health up for years as a recovering addict.
If youre up for some really beautiful metal music of loss and healing, give try for "Kaunis Kuolematon" (Beautiful Undying) for example song "Hyvästi" (Goodbye) - the english lyrics can be easily found. Absolute masterpiece of band about death, loss and hope. They are really great at combining smoothness and roughness in music - the polarities of metal. "En ole mitään" (I am nothing) would be one extremely heart hitting songs about loss - but you got to see the songs in context to the whole albums, they are journey.
AIC has always been a good to band for coping, well for me anyways. My favorite song by them and its another demonstration of how powerful Lane can be behind a mic is "Bleed the Freak"! Definitely worth a listen if you are unfamiliar with the tune.
I watched a Interview on Rick Beato channel with Jarred von ALC. I think its interesting that he said he became a "singer" cuz he tried to compete with Layne even know Layne is better by far
Dude you really need to check out "The One You Know" by Alice in Chains. Its after the Layne Staley era, but there's a line in the second and third choruses that hits so god damn hard for people who suffer from depression. One of the major symptoms I experience that people don't often talk about is angry outbursts, and "The One You Know" really hits on that topic well.
I am a lover of music that is different, unique. Aic did that for me!! I am a depressed woman from long ago. I say i am a functioning depressed person. True or not. My alone time are trying. Even under the best circumstances. I need help, in a society that damns mental illness!
You should react to Wechaaaala by Young Spirit next, for context it's a rounddance song, made by a Cree drum group, it's indigenous/first nations music.
Powerful vocals. Unmatched. The last verse is so intense. I've tried but can't match the power without cracking my voice. Layne will forever be what I wish to achieve vocally. That power is insane. Wrong interpretation. This song is about being struck down from the start. The last pick for baseball. Boxed in from the get go.
I'm 66 and told that I'm not to be called an ex-musician so I'm a musician and Alice In Chains is one of my top groups but RIP to Layne Staley & Bass player Mike Starr🙏 Guitarist Jerry Cantrell said it's the restrictions the producers, radio DJs and producers do. Watch their live 1990 from the Moore theater where they say the line "buried in my shit"
I'd like to tell you about my box, but I'm not sure anyone would understand maybe or maybe not, I'll put it this way the songs that I resonate mostly with nine inch nails (a lot of songs)then tool(especially sober)korn, after that it varies from one song one artist like one song from Danzig (can't speak)or candlebox (far behind) but mostly nine inch nails it's the mood of the music and the lyrics usually both like Moody blues (melancholy man)
I know that I've felt anxiety before last year bc its normal. However, last year was the first time that it was so bad that I literally couldn't do anything bc of it. Reached out to some people I thought I could trust and found out that, in all actuality; I can't trust them. One of them being my mother and the other, a 'friend', both of whom I am no longer in contact with. Both were kind of like "That sucks. Well, have fun; good luck." (My mother) and "Well, I'm going swimming now. Bye." (Ex-friend).
same, I have processing issues and really wanted to be able to follow through because I love this music but the sound levels are too close to each other for me to continue😓
@5:40 you hit the nail on the head about them being anti-establishment.. That's why YT & others have so many trolls/bots in comments blaming Layne for his issues instead of getting to the root of all our collective problems (ruling class).. They love to act like they don't know how Layne could've wasted such talent etc.. I get tired of seeing the propaganda and puppets..

Wish the music video actually showed Layne hitting these notes… he looks so chill while singing for some reason lol. Put a mic and stand in front of him and actually show him hitting these notes… only complaint.
It's interesting that part of the lyrics go, "Jesus Christ, (Deny your maker)." Implying Jesus Christ is our maker, whom we deny. You don't get that clearly defined statement very often in mainstream songs.
So tell me doc. What's your take on all of these grunge guys overdosing or dying by suicide ? Is this being out of the reality box or being too deep inside it ? Seems like we may have been a bit happier with the same old formula. You may be a bit young to understand . You can't learn everything from a book. Sometimes you have to live the whole timeframe. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have since I lived it all
I struggle so hard with being in the box that I feel obligated to stay in. People's expectations of me feel like chains, even if they've never actually put those expectations on me. I truly feel like I can never let my true self show. On an unrelated note... I would love to see your take on the song 'Lullaby' by Nickelback.
From adv_mat: @andrewdrexler6593 Hi and thank you for sharing such important yet difficult situation. I hear you battling society expectation, and some unsaid standards, norms against own needs... It is such a crazy situation to many of us, that we are somehow pushed into roles we play instead of being truly ourselves. Like to me it seems that everyone struggles this or that way, despite different culture backgrounds or wealth level. Everyone is battling with something, yet for some crazy reasons we expect from each other these masks being put on our faces and everyone is playing a game of faking "how is your day ? Faaaantastic, and yours?" Sometimes i feel like everyone is pushing expectations on how to behave towards others, cause themselves cannot fix own problems.. i might be wrong, but the more i understand some poeple the more i see that. Whatever is the reason.. it sucks we cannot be just open, friendly, understanding and give each other space to be wronge, broken, wrinkled in a different beatifull way. I don't know why we all lie like this but it is a ways to effort  What i think is important in such moments, to have some group, people, friends that you can freely be your crazy self :D Like for others we can just go with the game as sometimes there is no other way around ( especially work life ) but then when we are with the trust ones... we can let loose the acting class and be truly ourselves. It sounds bit obvious, i know, but for me it is more of understanding that value of my friends. Knowing i can be my honest version and that gives me a bit of more boost and openness. Sort of awareness, mixed with appreciation makes that feel better these moments . However you get to be yourself please know you deserve that, you deserve to be understood the way you are and loved for who you are :hugs: Matt
From Shan: @andrewdrexler6593 Hi Friend, Thank you for sharing. There is so much truth to what you are talking about in this post. Too many people feel trapped and stuck under the pressure and weight of other people's expectations of them. They feel as though they can't be their true and authentic selves because they have to mould and shape themselves to fit into the box that others, family, friends, society, created for them. I am sorry that you feel this way Friend. Everyone deserves to feel comfortable being themself and accepted being themself. I can imagine how emotionally, mentally, and socially draining it can be every day having to put up this facade in order to try to live up to these expectations. And the concern, worry of what people will think, say, feel if you fail to live up to them. They are making things harder on you than it needs to be and unfortunately sometimes they don't even realize it. It is a hard position to be in because you so desperately want to break out of the chains but at the same time you don't want to disappoint them. I understand how you feel. It is a very real struggle that many people face, more than we know, so thank you for opening up about it and for sharing your truth. I really hope that one day things will change for the better, that those shackles will break and you can gain the freedom of living each day as your true and authentic self, and that you will be accepted and loved as your true self by all those you love and care for. You deserve that friend, and it is my wish that one day, that will be your norm. All the best to you :white_heart:

Lastly, please take your time, dont rush, push for any solution - it takes time to put pieces back together in place and the more we give ourselves understanding and space, the easier it seems to get. Tensions and pressure didnt worked for me.. in my case, i had to relax, let it internally go, come at peace with life as it is and keep the pieces of memories i have of him strongly in part of my heart, and sometimes think of him
I hope you find here with us your peace, ways to go through and be happy again, to get the most of life you can for yourself :hugs:
Matt
From lf76: @terryweatherbee8564 Hi,
Grief is an absolute pain to go through and is different for everyone, I have been dealing with it for 9 years now and I completely understand that my grief is different too yours.

I would also like to add that we are here for you.
From sbrent: @terryweatherbee8564 Losing someone you love is never easy unfortunately there is no such thing as preparation for losing a piece of your heart! This really hits home for me as well because a couple months ago I lost my aunt to lung cancer, so my heat is still broken. The one thing I can tell you is to hold on to those beautiful memories that you and your mother made and to keep going even when life is throwing its best at you because your mother wants to see you doing amazing things and living a happy and prosperous life. Sending my Condolence to you!!!!!!!
From djstarion: @terryweatherbee8564 Hello friend,
It was like I was reading my own post for a second. I also lost my mom 11 years to cancer, and it was extremely hard. Honestly it still is.
Rusty Cage by Soundgarden and any song from Badmotorfinger is also a great representation of the best of this genre.
So very happy you do what you do - perhaps I could help
Wake Up by Mad Season(live) with Layne Staley would be so good for a mental health analysis. In my top 5 grunge tracks
You sound like an honest person and have just had some bad experiences with people.

I’d highly recommend reviewing River Of Deceit from Mad Season, a supergroup with Layne on vocals. A live version is available on TH-cam from Seattle 1995.
Chicks drool over Layne when they listen to him and hear him belt out his song!
You should hear this song 🎶 Live at The Moore 💥
Yep, Jerry said the song is about the media/government is feeding you what they want you to know but you have to look outside of it
I am of the Gen-X. Alice in Chains is or was an excellent band. I feel that the alternative scene exploded after Nirvana`s "Smells Like Teen Spirit" exploded onto the music scene.
AIC and Sound Garden defi the best of the 4
U are 100% correct!
The best band ever!
Absolutely!!!
The posers poster was in bad taste. It literally distracts from the message of breaking out of your chains. Its hypocritical to say help break the chains but then you pit chains on people.
I get people have their opinions and can like who they like. Thats fine. But dont label others posers. They were all awesome.
First time here and I agree. It feels like it goes against the message of the video. Even if it would be meant as a joke, it's bad taste.
my thought exactly
Thank you guys so much for your feedback. First off - wanted to validate your comment...it sucks when humor misses and serves as a distraction from something that feels important, and that was a mistake on our end. I've taken your feedback to our team, and we will ensure that future edits align with the mission and heart behind the channel. Thank you for your critique, and for using your voice to help improve our community!!
It's interesting to see people studying us.
You should check out noose by A Perfect Circle
I know you weren't talking to me, but thanks for the tip.
@KennethSorling it's a deep song
Layne did 1 Album with the guitarist from pearl jam snd drummer from screaming trees. Listen to River of Deceit” by Layne and Mad Season. Chris Cornel covered it in 2015 with Mad Season members after Laynes Death
Search for it.
Nutshell🤘🏻
Chilli and alice in chains, I'm so freaking jealous 😫
You got your "Stank Face" on AIC
Spin "DC SOUND ATTACK" by CLUTCH 6:29 video. Rebels against the DC swamp. Bet it makes your playlist.
Love hate love love at the moore is a must listen
The band I’ve was also what I listened to back then too and filter
I'm sure you know but Staley and Cornell both died some time ago.
They really brought you back to the late 60's early 70's where bands could really speak their mind, rather than follow an algorithm.
Boxed in from the get go.
this is late radio version. It played as intended until the nipple slip.
Check out Mad Season, I think it is some of Layne's best work.
you should listen to Blow Up The Outside World by Soundgarden
Please listen to their song ‘Black Gives Way to Blue,’ it’s their goodbye and eulogy to Layne.
Knowing is half the battle.
you look like Jerry Cantrell in early '90s
I'd like to tell you about my box, but I'm not sure anyone would understand maybe or maybe not, I'll put it this way the songs that I resonate mostly with nine inch nails (a lot of songs)then tool(especially sober)korn, after that it varies from one song one artist like one song from Danzig (can't speak)or candlebox (far behind) but mostly nine inch nails it's the mood of the music and the lyrics usually both like Moody blues (melancholy man)
if you have not reacted to rooster yet you really should. it will give you the feels.
Need to listen to the album version. This music video is chopped up for tv. The original hits harder
It’s a metaphor for feeling trapped or controlled by pressures of society, media lies and manipulation. Also ones internal struggles.
React to "Love Hate Love" live at Moore theater!!! By Alice in Chains obviously lol.
Bye." (Ex-friend).
mad season river of deceit
Great video! Please don't put music when Taylor is talking. It's very distracting and hard to focus. Thanks for everything you do!
same, I have processing issues and really wanted to be able to follow through because I love this music but the sound levels are too close to each other for me to continue😓
AIC is great but you should also listen to Layne sing with Mad Season. River of Deceipt and Wake Up are Layne Stayley at his very best
please listen to the song Wake Up- by Mad Season. In my opinion the album Above is some of Layne's finest work.
Need to listen to the beavis and butthead version lol that is how I seen it on mtv.
Man in the box like an animal in a cage, hence the barn setting
2:03 There is no need to be condescending with this graphic. Let people like the music they like and enjoy themselves.

Wish the music video actually showed Layne hitting these notes… he looks so chill while singing for some reason lol. Put a mic and stand in front of him and actually show him hitting these notes… only complaint.
Heavy Metal as a whole is anti establishment.
This song is about Lane Staley’s discussed with corporate slaughter houses and the mistreatment of their animals
Next AiC recommendation - Angry Chair and Rooster.
Music calms the beast so they say.
You should check out some Killswitch Engage song like Hate by Design, I am Broken Too, Rose of Sharyn, Take Control
It's interesting that part of the lyrics go, "Jesus Christ, (Deny your maker)."
Implying Jesus Christ is our maker, whom we deny.
You don't get that clearly defined statement very often in mainstream songs.
Tommy Dreamer says hi. IYKYK
I never considered AiC Grunge.
They were were too heavy to be Grunge.
They were Metal 100%
That's why Metalheads like this band.
Faaaantastic, and yours?"
Sometimes i feel like everyone is pushing expectations on how to behave towards others, cause themselves cannot fix own problems.. i might be wrong, but the more i understand some poeple the more i see that.
Whatever is the reason.. it sucks we cannot be just open, friendly, understanding and give each other space to be wronge, broken, wrinkled in a different beatifull way. I don't know why we all lie like this but it is a ways to effort
What i think is important in such moments, to have some group, people, friends that you can freely be your crazy self :D Like for others we can just go with the game as sometimes there is no other way around ( especially work life ) but then when we are with the trust ones... we can let loose the acting class and be truly ourselves.
It sounds bit obvious, i know, but for me it is more of understanding that value of my friends. Knowing i can be my honest version and that gives me a bit of more boost and openness. Sort of awareness, mixed with appreciation makes that feel better these moments .
However you get to be yourself please know you deserve that, you deserve to be understood the way you are and loved for who you are :hugs:
Matt
From Shan: @andrewdrexler6593 Hi Friend,
Thank you for sharing.
Oddly enough the LS. Talks about this song and how it’s about the cruelty and animal abuse cows suffer. Check it out. Wild interview
