I used to be in this camp and would get deathly afraid at verses like this. In my mind, there was no way to really know if I was a serious enough Christian, I just had to repent enough and try hard enough. It wasn't until about three weeks of frantic studying and prayer that I finally (and suddenly) understood this whole passage in an entirely new light: You CAN'T please God by your works. You can't even WANT what's right without a complete transformation happening within. It's completely impossible to walk in righteousness perfectly in this side of heaven, and it's even harder when the root cause in our hearts, which is sin, has not been fixed.
It was in that moment that I understood that this passage had a second meaning: That no amount of Christian works done in Jesus' name would be able to prove that you were a good enough Christian. That the ONLY way to be acceptable to God was FAITH ALONE in what Christ did on the Cross, and to be born again. And that it was by FAITH (and faith alone, without adding a single word or deed) that our hearts could even be changed to begin with.
I was actually a bit uncomfortable with this realization because it was so different than what I was taught (and what I had been raised to believe). But I came away from it realizing that I couldn't come to any other conclusion. That the faith alone message of the gospel was what the scriptures clearly taught, and I decided to make up my mind about it. I said "okay, I guess I am saved by grace, no matter what I have done or will do. And by faith, my heart will be changed from within" and I stopped trying to beat myself into submission. I stopped striving. I didn't really say any special prayer in that moment other than acknowledging and coming into agreement with this, not thinking much more of it initially.
In the following weeks, I noticed multiple things changing. 1) God was answering big prayers like wildfire (in a way I had never seen before), 2) I was feeling the physical tangible presence of something new when I'd pray, worship, or study the Bible, which I soon realized was the Holy Spirit, and 3) my heart began to change and I suddenly began to value God's ways in new ways that I had not in the past (my desire to live in sin has been decreasing and my desire to follow God, though I am imperfect, has been growing within and it has NOT been something I have had to beat myself into submission with).
I later led a very close friend to Christ a few months later with this same gospel message. This person had grown up in a background much like mine and did not understand the gospel in this manner. They also got filled with the Holy Spirit and TOTALLY transformed in a way that is so big that I can hardly describe it in words. They are unrecognizable as a person today, completely changed from who they were by the work of the holy spirit, and by the faith alone gospel message.
I am 100% positive that this is the pure, unadulterated gospel message. That God loves us, even WHILE we were still sinners, and died on the cross on OUR behalf to fulfill the righteous requirement that we could not fulfill. And that by simply accepting it as a free gift and placing our faith in what HE has done, we can be made right before him and become born again, being given a new heart and new desires. It is NOT a work of ourselves, nor is it something we can repent our way into or do enough works to prove. We are saved by faith alone, and only faith can do what no other religious work could ever do.

The simplest way for a born again Christian to simplify this is to understand the difference between "state" and "status" with God. Your status as "saved" is fixed as soon as you confess your belief in Jesus Christ, you couldn't sin enough to become lost, period. Your "state" in this life is at risk and you can also lose rewards and inheritances, but not your salvation. In 1st Corinthians 5:1-5 we discover that even sleeping with your mother-in-law at worst can get you killed by Satan, but your spirit is saved. Since your spirit is circumcised away from your flesh by the Holy Spirit, and sealed by him, your soul purchased by God, you cannot ever become lost. This is fact for a person in this dispensation only, don't wrest the scriptures to your own destruction.

The gospel message in the bible is very clear. Many people simply reject it and decide to believe otherwise because of their pride. Pride has always been the problem ever since the devil. If you're humble, you would never think to trust in your works to be saved or stay saved. But if you're proud, you will think "Surely I am good enough, I am keeping my salvation by my great works, look at me!". That's putting it simple.

It's interesting that MacArthur appeals to James's quote that faith without works is dead in order to support his contention that we are saved by our obedience, but he doesn't mention James 2:10 -- "For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it." Does MacArthur really believe that he has merited salvation by his perfect obedience, since when it comes to salvation, nothing short of perfect obedience will suffice. Martin Luther once said that our greatest sin is presuming that we are righteous. It seems that MacArthur is guilty of that, and encouraging his listeners to also be guilty of presuming that they are righteous.

Personally, I've never seen someone using James 2 to justify works salvation ever post James 2:10. I've seen many people quote James 2: 11-26 to justify works, but conveniently leave out the 10th verse. There was some yahoo on Jacksmacks channel a couple of days ago that did this. Couldn't believe it, he posted verses 11-26 but left out verse 10 lol.
It's no different than people who say we basically have to stop being carnal because 1 Corinthians 6: 9-10 tells us so, but they leave out verse 11 where it tells us we are washed, justified, and sanctified.

These people are insane. Even if they decided to keep the law perfectly, (which is impossible) they still wouldnt get to heaven because they’ve sinned in the past, prior to keeping the law. Faith in Christ is the only sufficient way to get rid of ALL sin for all time, once and for all.

The book of James speaks to people already saved. A famous one is even the devils believe and tremble. James is showing they are not lost but they need to step up and act on their faith. Kinda like a husband not stepping up in a marriage not putting any effort it.A counselor might say your marriage is dead you need to put more effort into it the marriage to make it healthy again. The marriage is not over the wife has not left. The marriage is a marriage it’s just a dead marriage because the husband is not putting any work in to it. Also I have seen many on the Lordship side say Romans does not speak to the lost becasue they want to shut down Romans 10:9. I have always not understood also to the ones that take that as salvation to get obeying him as lord to be saved. That is not what is it saying you are just declaring him Lord. I recommend verse by verse ministry. Stephan Armstrong is reformed but he is great and does not preach lordship salvation.

What is amazing to me is reading all the comments from people who make such bold claims about what MacArthur believes, which he most certainly doesn't believe or teach. Not one thing that he has said in this clip (or in any of the other sermons that he has preached, or books that he has written) makes the claim that our salvation is based on our merit, in any measure. On the contrary, he emphatically preaches against our salvation being merited by anyone other than Christ Himself, and by Christ alone. I am amazed at all of these comments from so many people who speak as if they themselves sit in the righteous judgement seat of God. I certainly do not adhere to every single one of MacArthur's theological convictions, but that being said, it is not right to misrepresent anyone in what they believe, which is what so many of you accusers in these comments are doing. Here it is, guys. We talk about this topic as we do other theological ones with a focus on man rather than a focus on God. The question is not whether believers have to be sure to perform works to have salvation, for salvation is by faith alone in the work of the Lord Jesus Christ. The better question is, what is the character of true salvation? Does true salvation produce inward and outward evidence of a submission to Christ? Or can a true submission to Christ be impotent and produce nothing? That is the important distinction to make. We have to describe what true faith (which is a gift of God) is like. It is not man trying harder to do more. It is man receiving faith and the Holy Spirit doing His work in a believer. Works are not earning salvation but evidence that someone is alive in Christ. Remember if a fruit tree bares no fruit you cannot assume it is alive.

      1 John 3
4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

@@Raymond1C I already replied to you elsewhere but stop terrorizing believers with your improper interpretation.
Copy and pasted from my other reply:
Believers in Jesus who trust in His Blood for their salvation have Body, Soul and Spirit. The Spirit cannot sin, whereas the flesh can and does sin. We are awaiting the redemption of our bodies at the rapture. We are told to follow the Spirit, because it cannot sin. We are told if we do Sin, Jesus is our advocate. We are told not to grieve the Holy Spirit of Promise (God cannot lie) because we can do so through sin or walking after the desires of the flesh.
1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Galatians 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
Romans 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
Romans 7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
Romans 8:23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the
      redemption of our body.
We will be chastened if we sin, and Jesus will plead for us:
1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
Hebrews 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
Hebrews 12:7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
Hebrews 12:8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
Hebrews 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
The New Spirit that cannot sin and the Holy Spirit:
1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
1 John 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
2 John 1:2 For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.
Ephesians 1:12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
Ephesians 1:14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Romans 11:6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.
Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
      The redemption of our bodies:
1 Corinthians 15:51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
1 Corinthians 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
1 Corinthians 15:53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
1 Corinthians 15:54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
1 Corinthians 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
1 Corinthians 15:56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
1 Corinthians 15:57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Thessalonians 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
1 Thessalonians 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
1 Thessalonians 4:15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
1 Thessalonians 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Soooooooo many Lordship salvationist in this comment section.
The true born-again Christians can discern the difference between salvation by grace alone through faith alone in the blood atonement alone for salvation...Period! Nothing added nothing detracted.
Those who are Lordship salvationist garble the gospel of grace with works-righteousness obedience works for proof of their salvation so-called.
They are back-loading works to the simplicity of the gospel. Making it another gospel a false gospel.
The sad thing about Lordship salvationist is that they cannot discern the difference; and they misapply verses and habitually take verses out of context, like James 2:17...faith without works is dead.
They actually think that one MUST show forth works (fruit bearing) in order to really be saved.
This is what is meant by back-loading works-righteousness obedience works for proof of salvation so-called.
They are either very spiritually and biblically babes in Christ, and have been deceived by listening to Lordship salvation false doctrine.
    Or...
They are not truly saved, lacking the Holy Spirit dwelling inside of them; thus having no spiritual discernment to UNDERSTAND the true gospel of grace alone.
John MacArthur is a Lordship salvationist; a deceiver who clearly teaches false gospel of total surrender all to the Lordship of Christ in order to really be saved.
    THAT'S WORKS PEOPLE.
Lordship salvation is a heresy of great perportions. It mixes Justification with Sanctification, salvation with decipleship.
Thus causing great confusion and teaching heresy.
    Galatians 1:6-9.
    6. I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
    7. Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
    8. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
    9. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed (damned).
    John MacArthur
    Ray non-Comfort
    Paul Washer
Voddie Baucham and many many others are proponents of and teach Lordship salvation heresy.
    Romans 16:17-18.
    17. Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
    18. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

You must be a Lordship salvationist. Back-loading works-righteousness obedience works for proof of salvation so-called.
      Salvation is a GIFT 🎁!
It CANNOT BE EARNED or added to by efforts of a individual.
If so, that would then make salvation a Debt to be earned by.
Have you not read the scriptures?
      Ephesians 2:8-9.
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
      Titus 3:5-7.
      5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
      6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
      Romans 4:1-5.
1 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?
2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.
3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
      Romans 11:6.
6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.
      ❤Romans 3:21-28.
      21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
      23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
      25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.
28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

@@The-GreenHornet - What you would call “backloading” the Bible calls “Fruit”. While it is true that salvation is obtained completely by faith apart from the works of the law, the result of real, genuine faith (as opposed to mere mental assent), will be FRUIT. There is no way around verses like this that explain it in exacting detail: Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. SMH...You obviously can't read a passage in CONTEXT.
The passage that you quoted is Matthew 7:15-17.

Look at his warning in verse 15.
      Beware of false prophets...
This passage isn't dealing with real and counterfeit Christians; like Lordship salvationist twist it to mean.
Jesus is describing those false prophets who will boast in themselves by saying...
Have we not prophesied in your name, and in your name cast out demons, and in your name DONE MANY WONDERFUL WORKS (patting themselves on their backs, boast boast).
Then Jesus will profess unto them, I never knew you depart from me ye workers of iniquity (Matthew 7:21-23).
Read the whole CONTEXT of the passage.
Stop cherry picking proof text for a pretext to fit your theology.
Fruit bearing, as you say is the proof of real salvation.
Try looking at the thief on the cross.
Did he bear any fruit? No!
Yet he simply believed on Jesus Christ as the messiah.
Jesus said...today, ye shall be with me in paradise.
All through the gospel of John the word BELIEVE is the focal point to have eternal life.
No repentance or fruit bearing is even mentioned in the whole gospel of John.
      The Philippine jailer asked...
What must I do to be saved?
The Apostle Paul said...BELIEVE ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST AND THOU SHALL BE SAVED, and thy house (as they believe in Jesus with simple faith in Him alone.

That thief had faith and that thief is with Jesus in heaven at this very moment. Something to think about! What saith the Scriptures.

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven." Being poor in spirit is acknowledging we are spiritually bankrupt sinners who need God. There is literally nothing we can do to save ourselves and earn our way to Heaven. Lordship salvation=pride and pride comes before the fall.

Obedience comes from the new nature. Jesus said this in a Kingdom parable - "But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me" (Luke 19:27).
The new nature where the Holy Spirit comes and lives inside you makes Jesus your Lord. We aren't saved by works but are born again/regenerated, given a changed nature (Ephesians 2:1-10) thus given a zeal for good works (Titus 2:14).
Jude 8 - "Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities." That dominion they despise is the dominion of Christ in Jude 25. (By the way, Christ/Messiah means "Savior King.")

Really good video and well explained. I’ll be honest though. I’m tired of seeing people attack John McArthur and I feel that is being bred in the comments. Also, to be fair, John mentioned obedience is a product of genuine faith in Jesus to quote what he said in context. I like this video a lot, and it definitely blessed me. I think the only thing that confuses me is the title, because it makes it seem like Jesus is not our Lord, when He is for sure. I think maybe defining Lordship salvation at the beginning would be helpful because I think some people interpreted as “we don’t have to obey God”. Just my thoughts

Lordship salvation is a heresy, and I would say even after being saved we cannot commit to the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord Jesus Christ commits to us, but let nobody be so foolish as to make a vow of obedience or anything similar, it would turn out like a new year's resolution, we will break our vows within a few days. The gospel is about Christ's commitment to us, not our commitment to Christ as MacArthur states.

I think the biggest mistake people make about interpreting Matthew 7:23 is not talking about the actual meaning of the word "knew" you. This is the very same word that marry used in the first chapter of Luke when the angel came to her and said she was going to be with child. And she replied how can this be for I've never known a man. It's just my humble non pastor's opinion that the key to this verse is knowing what that word means. This is a deep abiding intimate knowledge of God. But no one ever talks about that aspect of this passage. I'm 58 years old and I've never heard anybody talk about what that Greek word here means. Knowing what that word means changes the emphasis of this passage. We need to be spending time getting to know God. We need to be spending time in his word and in prayer.

The confusion lies in many people conflating justification and sanctification, which are two distinct aspects of the Christian walk. Paul explains these concepts in great detail throughout the New Testament, and I’m surprised more people don’t recognize this clear distinction. Justification is by faith alone-faith is what justifies us. However, the enduring faith we display throughout our lives, evidenced by our obedience and works, is the process of sanctification. This is an ongoing battle that serves as proof of our faith but is not what justifies us.
The key point is that if you’re not actively engaged in the process of sanctification after being justified by faith, as Paul continually emphasizes (Romans 7:15-25, Galatians 5:17, Philippians 3:12-14, 1 Corinthians 9:27), it’s a sign that you may not have had genuine faith to begin with. Mental assent and true faith are not the same thing. Too often, people mistake faith for mere mental agreement, then wonder why their lives haven’t changed.
To clarify: Yes, faith alone (sola fide) is what justifies or saves you, but sanctification is the evidence that your faith is real. As James 2:26 states, "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also." It’s a simple, distinct concept-not as convoluted as it’s often made out to be.

  • @JSK95
    @JSK95 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Thank you, Onorato, for plainly and concisely clarifying the difference between salvation and discipleship. I'm going to be frank. I believed that salvation is by through faith and grace alone, but after coming across a lot of different videos on soteriology ranging from Protestants, Catholics, and Orthodox, I started to confuse myself and started questioning my initial beliefs. But as you have elucidated by the gift of the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit also has removed the veil that started to cloud my mind with all these contradictory teachings that works is also required to prove my salvation.
When we look at the scope of the Gospel and what Jesus taught, it honestly shouldn't be this difficult to understand how we can be saved. If salvation was meant to be so esoteric, then we all would be doomed (and it would go against the fact that God "desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth" and that He is "not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance"). But what I've come to realize is that the root of all this contradiction and confusion is the fact that Christians are starting to confuse salvation with discipleship. Rather than this ongoing continuance of ignorance and pointing fingers at one another, I pray that the Holy Spirit will allow all followers of Christ, whether it be Orthodox, Catholic, or Protestant, to come together and establish once and for all what salvation is and what discipleship is, and then start preaching that Truth moving forward.
Lastly, what sets Christianity apart from all other worldly religions when it comes to salvation is that it is a gift freely given by God because of His mercy and grace. There is absolutely no amount of good works anyone can do to be saved or be worthy of being saved. All other religions claim that one can be saved through good works. Why is it that Christianity is regressing back towards this idea of works-based salvation? It certainly has to be Satan trying to deceive us one last time since the work of the cross has already been accomplished. May God open our hearts and minds to the truth!

  • @ranger8435

I’d argue that they don’t acknowledge Jesus as Savior, only Lord. Why would they need him as Savior if they believe their works will get them to heaven? The death, burial, and resurrection means nothing to them as the whole point was God’s work to save them, yet they don’t believe they need it. Everyone and everything will proclaim him as Lord in the end, but only those who proclaim him as Savior will be in heaven.

Only those who stop sinning will be going to the kingdom of God.
10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

EXCELLENT explanation of the Gospel which is the GIFT OF ETERNAL LIFE through the finished work of our Saviour Jesus Christ through faith alone, through Christ alone, plus NOTHING ELSE.(My opinion lordship salvation IE 5 Point Calvinism is a False heretical gospel that offers a works righteousness gospel that can never lead anyone to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. I would like to know how one earns the gift of God. Romans 6: 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The moment one attempts to earn the gift of Eternal Life it is no longer a gift and they must pay the cost, death in hell eternally separated from God because they refused the Gift of God. Jesus Christ paid that penalty of sin which is death for the entire world which Calvinist also deny. )
