That’s so true, he gave her so little time to make a decision that would affect her entire future and also he did it when she was drunk so she wasn’t even in her right mind and if I remember correctly she said something random like “I’m a pirate” or something like that in her drunken state, which had nothing to do with his question, and he took that as a rejection.

I think Diana didn't understand what Gilbert meant. Gilbert meant that he didn't have any opportunity to tell Anne he was free of Winnie because he promised Winnie not to tell anyone about their breakup for two weeks. I don't think he should've made that promise.
