  • This gorgeous daily driven 1962 Pontiac Tempest Lemans Convertible is one of the rarest cars we've ever seen! It was the deluxe model and the most expensive Pontiac you could buy in 1962. They only came with the "Trophy 4" four-cylinder engine (which was basically 1/2 of a 389 CI). This engine used the actual crank, rods and pistons out of Pontiac's 389 CI engine. It still sports its original under hood insulation, chrome valve cover, manual brakes, manual steering, and a super rare extendable under hood safety light. Even more interesting is the rear mounted "Torq Tube" 2-speed power Glide "Rope" transmission, that has no "Park". The transmission is shifted by hand with a simple under dash lever. The car has independent suspension, after market 15" chrome rally wheels (the only Pontiac model to have 15' wheels in 62), GM beige paint, deluxe fender and quarter panel trim, power top, and quad T3 headlights. The interior is brown with bucket seats, seat belts (which were an option), original AM radio, wing vent windows and rear seat courtesy lights. Oh, by the way, it still has its original spare tire and side lift rocker panel jack.

When this car came out, I'm not sure it turned any heads, but now it seems it can. It reminds me of the 1963 Dodge Dart. The Dart was an early compact car, that appealed to young families & probably college students. I didn't think it was all that cool, until a TV show character drove one. Maybe it was about a hip detective or crime investigator. Not as cool as Miami Vice,....but another one. Now I am way more excited by the Tempest Lemans, it reminds me of the Chevy Corvair, the models known as Monza and The Spyder. In 1962, I was only 9 years old, and cool cars didn't catch my eye until I was a teenager. Now as an oldster,.....this car is very appealing. Probably some would view it as antique car, at 62 years of age in 2024. I appreciate your review and great photos of this overlooked classic.

Nice car. The front grill looks like a 65 Plymouth Valiant 👀 Or a Barracuda

Nice to see an intact 1962 car, but this one could sure use a sharper paint job. Is that color called ( metallic Beige)? Not going to impress any teenagers or car enthusiasts. Bright red, glossy black or metal flake blue, maybe something in a two tone green or aqua, would turn some heads. This appeals to a boring suburban couple, or somebodies, mom. I saw one in light yellow, that looked great, probably not a stock color.
