The settings notebook is specific to the Desktop folder when you right clicked on the Desktop. OS/2 Workplace Shell is an object oriented paradigm, everything is an object and has its own settings. The Windows OS/2 Workplace Shell program duplicates as much of the OS/2 look and feel as was possible in Windows 3.1, so not all object orientedness is available.
I just wanna thank you, Michael, you're a huge inspiration to me. I was inspired by your videos to create my channel, which I recently uploaded a video on.
Its EWS, Employee Written Software. It was never endorsed by IBM nor made into a product. I helped translate this into Swedish back in the day when I worked there and was there when corporate rejected the idea of making this an official product.
Michael could you do a video on DOS Compatibility in OS/2? I wonder if WIN3.11/DOS software would really run properly in a OS/2 based system, if so OS/2 is the definitive winner out of these 2 for me. But if it isn't then this IBM Workplace Shell looks like the much better option for home use.
Please note, OS/2 didn’t “virtualize” MS-DOS, it included a full implementation of DOS with slight improvements. This is why Windows 3.x could run inside OS/2 Warp with no problem. If you had Windows running on your PC and you installed OS/2 Warp on top of it, it would patch Windows on the fly at install time, therefore you wouldn’t have to buy Warp with Windows you could just buy Warp and save on the license fee.
I didn't actually, haha. It's a bit of editing trickery. I placed a background behind the video and changed it each time the wallpaper changed to give it the illusion of 16x9. I can see that it worked! Lol
Hi Michael! How about you please try making video about installing WMP (Windows Media Player) 7.1 on Windows 7 or 10? It would be an interesting thing to see, especially because almost no one tried doing that.
I hope Micheal knows he can just double click the top left button to close the window instead of clicking it and moving the mouse all the way to close. Just a protip.
OS/2 is so much cooler than this. The Workplace Shell shames every desktop before or since. I use Kubuntu, it is a tragedy by comparison to my OS/2 Warp installation THIRTY YEARS AGO. No one is paying attention to what will one day become an object of study and hopeful attempts at emulation. Ah! Thanks Mike!
80s-90s that time when you had so many different computer architectures and OSes, many CPU, GPU manufacturers to choose from. A lot of things died out, not much left to choose from. That's easier for consumer but is kinda boring. Also if one screws up the competitor gets dominant position, like we've seen with CPU's with then gets bad for consumer. Same with mobile phones. Earlier there were PDAs, mobile phones with their own SW, symbian smartphones and now all we've got are Android and iOS, windows phone died. Devices were more interesting back then.
I've used this OS/2 shell. It's pretty cool. Also tried Calmira and Norton desktop for windows 3.1.
I'd like to wish you a Merry Christmas! I had a great day today!
Thank you! You too

3:53 Another instance of what I call “DOSlexia”: here writing “OS/2” as “OS\2”.

Wow that is awesome to hear! Thank you so much for the kind comment!
Interesting how IBM itself made this, especially since OS/2's main competitor was Windows. I hope you all have a lovely Christmas!
You too!

@@MichaelMJD hi
I like Windows 3.1 and great video MichaelMJD

OS/2 allowed for different autoexec.bat & config.sys for every DOS app that you wanted to tailor to run. Device drivers, paths, etc...
I would be curious to see this too. Debating with OS to install on my old Thinkpad.
Next video: Running it in Windows 10
Can you do a video installing windows 1.0 on the windows 98 pc
I love your vids, Michael! you inspired me to test things out in VM's I've subbed and hit the bell!
That's awesome, thank you so much!
Love your videos,Michael
thank you! glad you like them
Can you please take a look at the first version of Linux Mint?
Great idea, I'd also like to see that.
That could make a good video! Will add to my ideas list
Yeah it’s pretty hard to find
It happened
And you commented on the new vid

Merry Christmas to you as well!
I wonder if you could run this shell on other OSs - curious as debating installing Windows 95, NT 3.51 or 4.00 on an old Thinkpad or trying OS/2 Warp.
Thanks, I did not know about this one. Cool!
Glad you found the video! Thanks for watching
very epic,

HOW'D YOU GOT THAT RESOLUTION?

Working for Windows 7 without the standard Explorer?
Please install Microsoft Plus on Windows 3.11 for workgroups!
you forgot to add santa wallpaper
yes
Ha, that would have been a good idea. Dang. Well there's always next year!
@@MichaelMJD True.
Nice

It Kinda Looks Like OS/2 Warp 3 when it came out...
I like os/2
Archerman Cool same
Try this on windows 10 PLEASE!
That would be interesting! Thanks for the suggestion!

I wonder if you could run IBM Workplace Shell for Windows on OS2/Warp Windows 3.1 Window mode lol
BUT WILL IT WORK ON WINDOWS 10??
Make a video about easter eggs in micrsoft products (like a hiden game in exel)
I’ve wanted to cover those for a while. May or may not be currently in the works :) stay tuned...

Linux currently supports about 2 dozen different CPU architectures. How many could you run back then?
@@lawrencedoliveiro9104 are those all desktop? Do they directly compete with x86?
@@iamnobody8 They cover the full spectrum of all the uses of computers today.
Here’s a bad idea. Everyone likes running old software in widescreen how about running windows 3.1 in widescreen.
that's not widescreen
underscoretb I know the one in the video is a boarder or the picture is stretched also I never said that the one in the video was wide screen
Damian9303 didn’t see that, nice
wait, HOW DID YOU MAKE 16:9 ON WINDOWS 3.1!?!?!?!
and the point????? why would you want to make windows 3.1 look like os/2.
But Windows 3.1 shouldn't be able to support this high of a resolution!!
Take a closer look at the sides. It doesn't.
Why?
make windows 10 look like windows 98
Put dat shyt on uindous 10
Explorer this shell is better
you drag on your videos forever lmao
