    The architect designs the building
    The engineer works out if it stands

    • @jacobtran4010
      @jacobtran4010 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@cautarepvp2079 it is easier to get job as a designer than a developer, very true. however, developers are more needed in team as there are 1-2 designer vs 10 developers. plus the higher salary cap. and good developers not only just know how to codes well but communicate well i.e. social skills and taste for aesthetics. just as good designers aren't afraid of logic analysis and reasoning i.e. programming or deep user research and not the pretty pixels people. as a developer, you can learn design very easily but as a designer you tend to afraid of coding since its harder.

    I'm interested in making a website accessible friendly, a comfortable UI for a large variety audience and have a color scheme to follow along with it. I only dabbled in HTML5 and CSS, barely in Javascript but I love making a website from scratch and creating things that makes the website more interactive. Seeing a button work, adding images, making the structure of the website, it all intrigues me. It's a hard choice, I'll have to talk more about this with an advisor at college. This video did help me understand a bit more of the differences with web designing and web developing!

    I feel like your analogy for a developer being "If you're the person who likes to do puzzles face-down" as it seems to get the core of the profession -- you may not have many of the clues as to how to get an app/website up and running, but that's okay because that's exactly your job to figure out.

    Thank you so much for this video, ever since I was in middle school I wanted to do graphic design. I love making digital art, logos, and simplistic things that also make you think. I’ve recently taken a web design class in high school, and I thought why not do both. I looked into it and I didn’t think I wanted to divest deep as web development. But all the other sources I looked at made it seem it was required. I know the basics pretty well, enough to get me through, but I really like focusing on the aesthetics. So thank you so much! This was so helpful! I’m going to pursue web design :)

    There are talented, motivated web designers who learn web dev, and talented web developers who can learn design. Those renaissance professionals end up getting the better jobs and getting the best salaries. Or, building the best products since they can work on both. You should strive to expand your skills both towards the functional and the aesthetics. UI/UX Design is moving closer towards the front end.

    I am a painter and Graphics designer. I am also an Art teacher. Via graphics, I do identity and branding, print and digital Marketing design e.g. Brochures and Magazines, Photo I high end retouching among others. I have never found something more important than converting my aesthetic/visual ideas into functional website. So I do all my preparation as designer in a sense that I need to get the right photos and color theme for the website, making sure that they will communicate the right message to the clients. And I make my ideas function by doing coding either in Notepad++ OR in Sublime text Hence a developer. I always want my website to appear responsive enough to much modern devices. I'm over 50 and am at the point in my life I can begin to start a career. I've been a mom and babysat my three grand babies for the last 34 years. I went to a meeting where I was taught the very basics of changing some things on our church web site. I realized I could do that all day and LOVE it. I would love to learn whatever I need to in order to become the best I can be. That being said, I have NO college and very little job experience due the ongoing illness of a family member. I saw a response you made, Jesse, to someone about not going to design school. I have done a small amount of research and found a certification course through the community college. I was also told to start watching videos, hence how I got here, to learn. I want to make a profession out of this. My husband isn't in great health and I need something I can be self sustaining with, but still be available to my family. Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Hi Jesse, I am a graphics designer. & i know graphics design very well. Though web design looks like graphics design that's why i wanna learn web development. Do you think my decision is right? if wrong then give me a suggestion.

    • @JesseShowalter
      @JesseShowalter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I think you could start by learning front end development and see if it's something that you enjoy. Since HTML and CSS are tied so closely with the layout and design of a website it would be a logical next step. If you learn that you enjoy coding then my suggestion would be to learn javascript and then from there the sky is the limit.

    Twelve years ago when I started in this industry, there was only a Web Designer or Developer....and the web designer would do all the frontend code too. The developer would be doing all the PHP/.NET.....building custom CMS's and shopping carts. Vanilla JS wasn't even a thing back then....jQuery was just starting to become the next big thing and that's all you needed to know. Now look at the state of industry!! There's more job titles and frameworks than I've had hot dinners...so just take your pick!!

    I saw your video of why you shouldn't go to design school and It got me wondering if you actually went to college or had any form of vocational training. I'm a web design student at 2 yr college (less risk and no debt) and I just wanted to ask if you can make a video on your journey of how you got into graphic/ print design and transitioned to web design in your own journey.
    And how you managed to make a portfolio and land a job in both (assuming you didn't go to college). I am a firm believer of teaching your self things as way of proven motivation however when I search for job listings and internships, many say require bachelors degree of some sort?
    -Really great content by the way!

    • @JesseShowalter
      @JesseShowalter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thanks for the encouragement, super happy to hear that you enjoyed the video. I did go to college but only after I had already been working in the industry. That's why I'm of the "don't go to design school" opinion... because it was not a productive use of my time or money. Making a video on my journey is a great idea, I'll put in the queue of videos to make. In a nutshell, I started out making band flyers. then got an internship at my church, then did a mentorship with a friend who is an awesome designer, then got my first full-time job, then freelanced then a design agency, now a startup and freelance. It's a been a while ride. Start making things that excite you, and learn by doing. Stay at it man, nothing good comes without hard work 🤘

      I think I am learning both as I am making the view of the website and even adding functionality to it.
      One more short question, don't we need to do those together, when we are writing code???

    Hi from Portugal, Jesse!
    I really enjoyed your video and subscribed to your channel. I'd like to ask you a question: Do you think it's harder for a person who learned by TH-cam and online courses to get a job in this area than a person who has a degree from college?
    Is there this kind of prejudice in this area or the only thing that really matters to the employers is if you know how to do even if you don't have a degree?

    • @JesseShowalter
