He is an inventor - He has invented a means of breaking down thought process and making it accessible to others. People are creative on a day-to-day basis, but our society has been conditioned to only view a small subset of action as creative.

Creative thinking is a skill. A creative idea must have value. To think (or to be) different is not creativity.
People are reluctant to be creative because if an idea doesn't work, it seems a mistake.
For lateral thinking provocation is important. We are in a certain box all (with our culture, values, etc). To think out of the box means escaping from this, change the rules and the constraints and create new ideas.

Many a fellow thinker possesses logical critique to a science. And it is in the obliterating practice of locating the ambiguities, in favour for certainty, that novel ideas can be cut in their infancy.
Provocation and its extension proves apt for creative thought. It is in disruption that entirely new continents of social and self relation become apparent.

Have been a giant fan of deBonos for the last 40 years and sat in the first row when he delivered a lecture on lateral thinking in Toronto at that time. He was wearing a casio calculator watch which I have worn ever since. He designed a think tank (a 10 inch globe on which a handle spun random words into a plastic window in the globe) which I used regularly for problem solving in my administrative work.for years. Wish I had it now as an icon of his early work,. Bill Longworth, Oshawa, Canada

What a brilliant mind. His work on lateral thinking and the 6 thinking hats deserves much more recognition. On my channel, I have also tried to make a video on 6 thinking hats, as I still find it to be one of the most creative brainstorming techniques.

I am currently ready the Six Thinking Hats. The method of thinking described in the book is very simple yet not obvious to our minds. But Dr De Bono has described the aspects of thinking in very simple way. Great stuff !

creativity is largely the ability to respond. the ability to appreciate what constitutes creativity is dictated by the expectations of the observer. a child may not be able to respond directly to his/her circumstances but may find alternative possibilities. the question is whether we can discern their response. so creativity is really relationship of doer and beholder. making a loud noise may get our attention because we're too busy to read the subtler signals thus stiffling other expressions.

I appreciate this video. As a person of indigenous descent, we have already developed and utilized this man's "innovative" ideas since time immemorial, which he is obviously rediscovering after some sort of "dark ages" phenomenon that stunted creative thinking in the Western or modern world. We call it the Circle of Life Teaching, similar to the six hats (six nations confederacy aka US constitution cept the US left out one circle, the circle of power, composed of those who the Elder women).

    • @En8el
      @En8el 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That men discounted the importance of the contribution of women in that cultural era isn't surprising.
Yes, de Bono came at these ideas from the point of view of being a medical doctor. His imagery and theory de Bono did in the 1960s was vindicated in the 1990s by neuroscience research. Great minds think alike.

One of the most important points he makes is how little education has been applied to "learning the skill" of creative thought. Most people think you are creative or not (eg: you have blue eyes or not). But creativity is a SKILL we all have the ability & responsibility to develop. Especially in this day and age, people NEED to learn these skills. Just this morning I was introduced to a great website: therightbraininitiative financially supported through the Gate Foundation. YAY!

Well domain skills help creativity also, to be trained playing an instrument, or programming with java, you have some way of incorporating the creative problem solving process to get to your desired goal, be it a composition or a software application. However, do not fret. I say if you don't have the domain skills, still project your blue sky ideas, and you will have a much more powerful incentive to learn to play an instrument, or learn to program ( or network with someone who can) than merely for the sake of having those abilities already.

Yes its not an insult because its not directed at anyone neither does it diminish anyones acomplishments.
And i do believe its a misunderstanding, not an insult but a "PROVACATION" knowing him.
You may like him or dislike him but if your understanding you will see the powerfull potential of lateral thinking.
We attack instead of construct. we have done virtually nothing for thinking because were so highly esteemed in our critical search for the truth.

@dasocks There is a danger in ones intellectual life is to make pronouncement and assertions that are the absolute truth. Doing so will tend to lock one into one point of view. If creatively you are exploring an idea or a theme, you need to do that for a time, but it is not a good thing to stay there. I can understand Edward's point of view in a post modern world, creatively you want to keep your options and choices open. When you say this is The Truth, it locks up your creativity.

In order for an idea to show "value", does it not have to show an application or use? If your idea is not useful, per se, as having the ability of being used to fuel more thinking that is useful, it must be applicable to the real world. e.g. string theory suggests 11 spatial dimensions (totally useless to us), but it also attempts to explain subatomic particles that we are trying to find. In order to be applicable, they must be compatible with existing convention.

4.19 min does not do justice to either the complexity or clarity of de Bono's thinking. What can one say in 4 min that doesn't sound reductionistic? de Bono's main contribution: patterns of thinking that work, and how to apply those thinking patterns to everyday life. He translates complex brain activities into everyday conversations that can translate into useful, creative actions.
