when i was in the mental hospital for attempted suicide i was singing this exact song on the floor of my room and one of the nurses, without me knowing, sat a chair in front of my door and watched and listened to me sing. after i finished, she smile and said that she was in a choir for years, and that my voice was lovely. we then talked about music until lunch came. i think about that nurse a lot.. i wonder how she is right now

When I was in the mental hospital they printed out the lyrics to car radio and we read them together in group. I also remember climbing/hanging on the fences at sunset after they let us go outside and we all sang tøp songs together. If I ever meet them I want to tell them how much they meant to us hurting kids. They’ll never know how many lives they’ve saved.

I’m two and a half years late, but I have a theory about this song.
According to Tyler, Ruby was a girl who went to his and Josh’s church and had Down syndrome. I think around the middle of the song, where the instrumental plays right before Tyler says, “tell our dad I’m sorry” that Ruby died, either due to Down syndrome or something else. I think in the song’s “timeline” this is where she dies because, 1: Organs are playing in the background, something that people do play during funerals, and 2: the lyrics afterwards say, “tell our dad I’m sorry,” most likely referring to how they both go to church and refer to God as their Father, and that Tyler wants Ruby, in heaven, to tell God he’s sorry. I have no confirmation on if Ruby actually died or not, and I’m not caught up on the TØP lore at all, (which is probably something I should have researched more before commenting huh) but this is just my theory.
And after saying "tell our dad I'm sorry" it starts saying "you're an angel." Not an angel fallen down, just an angel. And what do some people think we become when we die? A friggen angel. Just supports your theory a bit more
Have you met anyone with down syndrome? I think he's calling her an angel because people with down syndrome tend to be very pure, with an innocent and beautiful friendliness and a very positive and fun outlook on life. I know this is stereotyping, but this is my experience of the people I've known. I think he calls her an angel because of this and that she was 'sent from the clouds' to teach us all that there is a much better way to lead our lives. And when he says "we're all diseased" I believe he's referring to the general population who, for the most part, do not have such an amazing positive attitude towards others, the world and life itself. That's my take on it anyway.
i saw a video of him playing it live shortly after writing it, and he talked about her in the present tense (and actually mentioned that her parents were in the crowd that night which was cool!) so good news, as far as i could tell, she's alive and well! :)

That’s an interesting theory. But Down Syndrome is not fatal. :) Your theory could be true still yet if she were have died of something else. But I personally think that by asking “Ruby” to “tell our dad I’m sorry” he’s asking her to let God know he’s sorry for he has sinned, and cannot say it himself so he asks “Ruby” since she is still “pure” in the eyes of Christianity.

I dunno if this will even be seen, but my name is Ruby.. and twenty one pilots saved me from something I wouldn’t be able to take back. My life was so painful, so lonely.. I used to hear stressed out on the radio on those hot summer nights, and I finally looked them up. I was overwhelmed when I discovered all their older songs, hearing Tyler break out into screams and soft hymns, I seriously felt so,, comforted. I knew all their songs like the back of my hand, and when I first discovered Ruby, I really lost it.. hearing Tyler sing so strongly while saying my name, it really, really helped me. I had never been spoken to the way Tyler sings to us. My vision has been worsening throughout the years, and my biggest concern is never being able to see my own art anymore- or my pets. But Tyler and Josh have made me so comforted within myself, sung me to sleep when I had insomnia.. and knowing so many people who can find comfort within Tyler’s lyrics, it’s so nice knowing I’m not alone. I mean, this song is so beautiful, but the thing that amazes me the most is, how someone decided to put the most perfectly fitting background picture in this video. I go to this summer camp for a few weeks every summer, and since I am in high school im a counselor in training. For several different reasons the counselor in training and the counselors must have kept names that aren't actually their real names, for example it could be something they like or activity they do or something. Overall it's supposed to represent them. So I decided that I wanted a name that when somebody would call me that I would feel extremely happy. So two summers ago I decided on the name Ruby. It literally puts a smile on my face whenever somebody calls me that whether it be a kid or another counselor because this song is my absolute favorite and has saved me many times. This is the kind of comment where most people don't really care about, but personally I felt like I wanted to share this considering it's been my nickname for three years now. :)

Tyler is such an incredibly amazing song writer. The amount of comments I see saying "omg im crying rn". He know just how to make these incredibly songs so that they touch peoples emotions and speak to them on a personal level. Songs like this prevent people from killing themselves and weakens depression and anxiety. You can just close your eyes, listen ,cry and feel the emotion that tyler shows through his music

I don’t leave many comments, but I want to write here.
I grew up in an abusive family, where my mother and stepfather abused me mentally and physically in every possible way. It seemed that there was no future and never would be. But Twenty One Pilots saved my life. This song and “Addict with a pen” song gave hope for a brighter future. Soon I will turn 25, I listen back and cry because I understand that I am happy and safe now. Thanks, Tyler and Josh.

this song stuck with me for whatever reason when i first heard it at 12.
when i was 14 my friend gave me a stuffed animal dog for christmas, telling me it was my new emotional support animal bc i constantly talked about how badly i wanted one. i named him ruby.
now im 20, i sleep with ruby in my arms every single night. hes a bit worse for wear but is so full of love. i literally dont leave the house for overnight trips without him. he really did stick with me over all these years; being my emotional support when i really needed it, moving from house to house even when i was just about homeless, and now getting me through college which has been anything but easy.
life has its ups and downs and sometimes it really doesnt feel worth living, but the ups are just too good for the downs to take over. keep going. make new friends if your old ones leave. find peace with yourself when you cant find it with anyone else. let yourself scream and cry when you need to and then be kind to yourself and tell everyone you know that you love them.

I think it’s more of the fact that both angels and humans are children/creations of god. Her being a fallen angel means that she is in closer relation with god hence she would know more on his character and have more conversations. So she’s the messenger. Not god but not human.

not too long ago, i found a dog off the street. she was so skinny from lack of food and she was very dehydrated. i named her Ruby after this song. i gave her food and water and took her to the shelter. the shelter found a microchip in her and they were able to contact the owner. the owner lived almost an hour and a half away and the dog had been missing for a couple months. the owner was so so grateful that she found her dog. every time i listen to this song i think of Ruby and how she is doing with her owner. i love that dog and this song so much
