Oh shut up! All Disney cares about nowadays is money and when Walt Disney Imagineering thought of constructing California adventure in the first place, they didn’t even start to think that since they were the people who were responsible for changing rides at the Disneyland resort then that means that they would take away all the California themed rides in CALIFORNIA adventure and they would just turn the theme of California adventure into the same exact Disney kind of theme as the Disneyland park. That’s why California Adventure should’ve never existed.
Feels like I’m really there. This version of the park had plenty of faults, but this was a fantastic blast of nostalgia. Thanks to your 2001 self for filming this
Even though this land needed lot of improvement and luckily it got it, I still have great memories of this place from when I was a kid. The classic music, California screamin, and especially that metro train style food place
I grew up with this DCA, and I absolutely adored it. Brings me a lot of nostalgia to be able to see it all again (especially while the parks are closed)
@@epicmickey1719 I remember the entrance and the tortilla factory and the disney junior show and some of the park. It feels like a dream though and it's so crazy and weird. It's because those memories were from when I was about 2 years old.
My boyfriend was trying to explain to me what DCA was like with the ‘old entrance’ since I didn’t come to the west coast until much later than 2001. He found this video so now I know. Thank you for recording and posting, this is a part of Disneyland California history.
The Animation lobby is so great. Surrounded by all those screens with familiar Disney music playing… I would just sit in there with friends for like an hour on hot days. We’d do Animation Academy a couple times and the voice-over stuff in Ursula’s Grotto. In 2015 when I was working at DCA I did a show for employees called “Flashback” and we got to rehearse in there after hours hahaha.
I really love seeing the DCA of my childhood I think the reason I love this version is because all the nostalgia it holds to me as a child. Idk if I would love it as much going into it as an adult. But I loved seeing your commentary and that you guys thought the park was beautiful
I was born in January of 2001 and I remember when Disneyland used to look like this. My family and I used to go a lot. Now it's been almost 8 years since I last went. Planning to go to Disneyland again soon.
Haven’t been in 11 years but been lots of times to disney, i stay about 4 hours away!! I reamber when this was just a parking lot and it was just the Disney park! I also stayed in anahiem over a month!
Just got hit with nostalgia, I remember going here as a kid. Lot of a fun memories made here. It’s changed so much, it really isn’t the same theme park. Hope to visit one of these days real soon.
Same but it's odd how i remember some parts of this park even though those memories were from when I was just 2 years old. It makes my memories seem fake like they were just some dream or from an old movie I watched.
Wow - it’s insane how many things I just forgot were there. Just seeing the old entrance with the big letters out in front was so nostalgic. I think the last time I saw the park looking like this I was about 9 years old. It’s also crazy to think that this park got redone within like 10 years of it being open. Thanks for sharing

Hi. Eric @ericchu Thank you for this fantastic video of DCA. Tonight, I am filled with so many memories. We visited DCA when it first opened with my mommy who was already very sick and in a wheelchair. We took several oxygen tanks and she had a great time. It meant so much to see the park. Miss the big California letters. I am sure you know this but thought I would mention it to your followers Those California letters were donated in May 2012 to Friends of the California State Fair, a nonprofit organization that benefits California Exposition & State Fair (Cal Expo) in Sacramento. Cal Expo is the site of the California State Fair and hundreds of other events annually. They were honored to have them and many people get to enjoy them again. Thank you so much @ericchu God bless you
Our first trip to DCA was late Feb or early March 2001... watched this video and I swear I think I saw us coming out of the Zephyr at night. I’m in a grey hoodie. Crazy. I’ve got to get out my old miniDV tapes and check my footage to see what I wore. I had just got a Canon GL-1 and was in art school for video production so I was always shooting video. I took that camera everywhere. Probably have 500 full tapes from trips & various events from 2001-2005. Then moved to a HDV cam and kept up through around 2010. I have a crazy archive of life.
“Oh look, it’s Mexicans. Mexican dancers!” 19:10 …have you never seen Mexicans dance before? 😂😂😜 In seriousness, this video took me back to my senior year in high school. I went to DCA in May 2001. I remembered a few things but others I’d forgotten. Nostalgia at its finest, heh.
God this takes me back. I miss those days. Loved the style of the park then but I think its grown more into itself as Ive grown more into myself, which has been great to see. I'll be going back soon and hopefully the animation building is open this time, thats the best attraction in the park imo. I definitely prefer Buena Vista Street to the Sunshine Plaza, but I miss Paradise Pier, good thing the bay and the Paradise Gardens bit are still there. How'd you feel about me using some of this footage in a video retrospective, I'd credit you of course. What an odd history
Hah! I saw your video linked from an Offhand Disney video. Besides being delighted to see your name, I had to stop and seriously question if I had gone to DCA with you two during those early years! Hope you’re doing well!

DCA is SO much better now. Unfortunate that it opened in a rush with a crappy budget. I first went in 2003 and was so underwhelmed and frankly quite bored. I was 13 and my cousins were 11 and 9. We were like...why on earth didn’t we go to Disneyland. The Aladdin play was really good though.
I miss old DCA. People hated it but my 11 year old self thought it was a blast. It was much less crowded than DL. People didn’t like that it didn’t “feel like a Disney park” but I thought it was actually kinda nice. Disneyland was right across the esplanade if people wanted Disney characters left and right.
