    It's interesting how different new mappers can be. I've tried teaching two of my friends to map: first one couldn't figure out what ticks sounds were on even after a dozen hours of mapping. Second one, even though having *less* experience with the game could easily pick up sounds and time simple songs, could understand where to put basic pattern like streams and jumps etc. Honestly it has been strange seeing him improve so fast, I'm going to keep coaching him until I have nothing more to teach him.

    Interesting, I have a background in electronic music production so I generally don't have a trouble spoting important sounds, rhythm changes, various rhythms in the song itself... I have a good understanding of music to say the least, but creating an interesting map is a whole different story. I only made my first map public, which is now graveyarded as it's just fundamentaly wrong. I have started another project that I sometimes open to do something with, but I am just not happy with how it looks as of now, seems uninteresting and boring just like your last example in the video, despite picking a genre I am most experienced with.
    Your videos help a ton tho, thanks for taking the time!

  • @cavemann_
    @cavemann_ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    Oh, I see how it is. So it's really better to start simple and get a grasp of it and then slowly go on to map slightly more complex songs so you don't have to focus on what became natural to you. Seems like the most efficient way to learn to map.

      Yeah, the main advantage is that some aspects of mapping don't really exist in lower difficulties, meaning there's less stuff to fuck up and you can focus on the basics. Otherwise it's easy to just do everything wrong. That being said, it's very possible to learn both ways, it'll just likely take a bit longer.

    The way i started mapping is through finding random songs that I found nice and tried mapping them, I eventually stop midway because I found another song. Although this was useful because I got a ton of experience from that. I used like 10 hours for 1 minute of a map, now probably 1 hour and it’s actually playable and looks nice. God my first map is so horrible

    • @mikeymladi9279
      @mikeymladi9279 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bruh me too (sort of)
      I map some songs that I find cool or find funny. Basically anything, besides those ones that have already been ranked.. Maybe...
      However it mostly takes multiple days for me to complete a map, maybe even weeks, because I still suck at mapping and I don't even know anything of advertising my maps or gaining feedback and fixing things and very few people play my maps.. The most successful one having almost 200 plays and a love heart..
      It could be worse though.. Getting a love heart is nice.. XP

    I have seen a few of your videos and I just wanted to comment:
    My friends have all played osu for a few years and they finally got me to try it. Quickly I realized that I was garbage at osu, but I always had fun still playing all the cool beat maps. I am a big guitar hero fan so osu always seemed like a keyboard (albeit more weaboo) alternative. So, instead of actually playing osu, I just started watching all the maps on the "can't lose mode". Then my buddy Mike told me how we can make our own beat maps and that has been my current osu goal for a week or two. If I were to catagorize myself as a certain type of new player, it would be someone with very little osu experience and very little experiance when it comes to music and understanding it. Having watched some of yours (and many other videos) the biggest thing that I feel is to just keep watching other maps as well as keep mapping yourselves. I have learned to use the editor a bit and the best feeling is when you get a part to look and feel really cool. I haven't improved much, but I am sure that I will continue to learn, practice, and improve. Hopefully I can one day get to the level where I can understand half of the stuff you talk about in your videos. Nevertheless, your editor guide videos have been a great help to me and I will continue to watch your videos and try to glean some knowledge from them. I don't know how many people try to start mapping before they can reliably finish songs on EASY, but for me, mapping is cooler and more fun (so far). I just thought that me telling you this might, i dunno, help you understand the level, backing, and ability of some of your viewers. Thanks

    As a mania player that has always had an interest in mapping standard (just because it's eye candy), this is a great video for me. Interestingly enough, I feel like I fall between the second and third person shown in this video - I will rarely, if ever, mess up any sort of rhythm, simply because mania rhythms get incredibly precise and I've been playing these kinds of games for over a decade. But when it comes to figuring out how to utilize motion, direction, and proper slider usage, I am absolutely useless.
    I really like the topics you examined in here, though. I actually found it somewhat helpful to see other people and watch you give them a bit more insight. Thanks for making this!

    I'm a mania mapper, started out by copying Guitar Hero songs and map it to mania, definitely help... (Although learning how to use a metronome probably has more impact for me), My style of mapping is pretty rare would say... (and I don't think it will be able to get ranked) Instead of creating whatever pattern I want, I follow the pitch instead, so... One instrument for every difficulty, one note for every key...

      Oh yeah, and regarding new mappers, when I started mapping in 2013, I sucked. Then in I guess 2015 or something, I stopped mapping for some reason. Then back in maybe December 2017, I started mapping again. I deleted my old maps because they were, well... Too bad to keep. Obviously, the first new map wasn't very good either. Looking back, it's kind of like a bland 2011 map. It had sort of a weird rhythm so it's probably not good for me to map even now. But still, it was an okay map. Not good, but okay for someone who just came back to mapping.
      Now I've made 9 maps since 2017, but I don't think any of them are rankable (except the Taiko-only ones, maybe). Oh yeah, and I'm trying to map a whole album. Because that's smart. Luckily it's just Taiko, which I'm experienced in so I should know a lot about it. Plus it's really simple, pretty much anyone could map a rankable Taiko map.

A month later he hacked a score and got banned. I wonder if this guy had some huge potential or was some wierd multi acc. If you want i can send you his maps as i downloaded all of them

    • @lustrusita
      @lustrusita 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      no, understanding the rhythm of the drum and intensity of the music are basic knowledge to make a map, not music theory
