    They were fast at the Barcalona test. They had brake issues at the Bahrain test and had to cobble together a temp solution to get thru the weekend. Then they had time to fix the brakes proper-like and have been back on the Barc pace since.

    considering danny had covid during testing, and DNF from basically 2 races (imola was basically a dnf as the damage to the car basically ended his race) I think give him some good luck and a chance and his pace will also be great (especially since the race he dnfd he was actually faster than lando, and in Australia aswell, 1 more lap Danny wouldve passed lando).

      I agree with this as well. A lot of people are saying Danny is really struggling compared to Lando, but I actually think in race pace they've been pretty even to the extent of some of the closest team mates on the grid atm - and I'm saying this as a Lando fan boy:
      Bahrain: they were close to each other all race (be it Lando was on a slightly different strategy) and Danny finished ahead
      Saudi Arabia: Through the race they ran close to each other in position on track and were working their way back through the pack when Danny had his issue and retired. I think they would of finished 7th and 8th if Danny had not retired
      Australia: Close together in qualifying and race. Yes towards the end Lando started stretching away ever slightly upto 5s, but then had his engine issue and they were close at the end
      Imola: Ended sprint ~3s apart and adjacent to each other. In the race yes was Danny's mistake, to me it was an easy mistake to do in the wet and then he had no pace in the race due to diffuser damage.
      All in all as long as Danny doesn't let his head drop too much I think it will be a close season between them if he can get some luck.

    Everyone seems to forget that they missed half their pre-season, it was just Lando and they had issues with his car too.. they just needed time to catch up but I still don't think they're there yet, that was a lucky podium, first by Lando crashing to end Q3 early and then Dan's crash to take out Sainz which may have also influenced Leclerc's race.

    Might sound weird, but the McLaren is weather sensitive. Bahrain and Jeddah are hot and dry circuits, while Melbourne had a more template climate and Imola was quite chilly with the rain always looming around.

    • @mikespearwood3914
      @mikespearwood3914 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's something related to their brakes as well: the cooler weather helps their brakes.

    • @finalfantasymad
      @finalfantasymad 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Long straights and tight corners generally cause more wheel/break temp increases.
      The weather seems to be the tipping point for their car for some reason. Cooler/Rain, passive cooling puts them below break issue threshold on a track where they expected issues. Hot and dry circuits cause it to go above.
      They should generally be fine on the more "winding" circuits made up of mostly fast corners ether way and if passive conditions are impacting performance this much they should only be a few small changes away from this being mostly solved everywhere.

But they were there to pick up the pieces, for which, credit is due (yes, they were like 25+ seconds behind, but they were also clear of the rest of the field, a place no one imagined they could be in after Bahrain and Saudi). They also made mediums last for around 44 laps if I'm not wrong. Lando was managing pace and tyres both with that car.

    I am still surprised just how much Red Bull and Ferrari have improved their engines compared to the Merc. I know the Merc's are really struggling with other problems at the moment, but there is no denying the Red Bull and Ferraris have a faster engine at the moment. Even if they sort out the handling problems, they are still going to struggle with a slower engine. I hope they sort that out quickly, would be great to have 3 or 4 teams fighting for the win each race. At the moment we get excited with just two teams fighting, double that and we would have a season to really remember.

    it was a shocker to see McLaren at the bottom, just like Mercedes being as bad as they are. But McLaren got better quick, with big difference in actual, and Mercedes being stuck at where they started, is shows how Mercedes messed up, not being able to solve the issues yet at all and car being as unpredictable as it gets. Interesting season is ahead, but somehow I feel RedBull will run away with it, the raw top speed will be easy breeze like it was for Mercedes in 2014.

    Again, Red Bull engines didn't fail, they are still using the same engines from the beginning of the season. Fuel vacuum issue in the first race and a broken fuel line in Australia was the cause of their DNFs. The PU's themselves had no internal or mechanical issues, they stopped running because they couldn't get any fuel.

    Agree with Scarbs. It is a derivable car, but probably inherently slower than the others. In some ways, the opposite of Mercedes. Will be very interesting to see how these two teams handle their development over the course of the season. I am still hopeful of a Mercedes resurgence over the next couple of races. Also interesting to see that despite all the doom and gloom around the Merc PUs suddenly Merc powered cars are back in the top 10. Teaches one not to jump to conclusions based on a small sample.
