    Very interesting. I soak up all I can about the Green Man.
    There are many pubs in England so named and their hanging signs often show beautiful and elaborate depictions of the benevolent spirit of the woods and forests.

    It's been more than fifteen (or twenty?)years by now that I discovered The Green Man... in churches and Cathedrals (mainly Brittain)where I photographed a lot of the mysterious figure. When you search for him( or her)you will be stunned at the amount of effigies there are...I've bought some books over the years and the image of the green man goes as far and widespread as Istanbul; Irak ; Lebannon and India . The Green Man we encounter in European churches are from the middle ages untill now.

    The green man didn't originate with the Romans, actually the green man with foliage leaves can first be found in Mesopotamian art work, going back before the Romans, he was called Al Kidar(the green one) worshipped as an agricultural spirit, and Egypt he was Osiris, call (Lord of Vegetation ) and in West Africa He was Ochosi, who was the keeper of the forest, which is where the Voodoo Spirit Papa Bois of Barbados, originally came from, Popa Bois, is the French name for ( Father Forest)

    Excellent video, a lovely walk-through, a quick question. Have you considered Romanisation and reconciliation of a pre-existing Northern Indo-European character into the Roman mythology? Celtic and Germanic groups are known to have used "green-men" in their artwork and it is quite possible the Romans like with other mythical entities simply took a deity they saw as having similarities with one of their own deities such as "Oceanus" and merged the two concepts. This has happened before with figures such as Minerva being equated with the Britannic Celtic deity Sulis to make "Minerva-Sulis" amongst other examples.

    Great work on your wood carving! All of my art is spiritually influenced as well. I have always assumed that the Green Man may be related to the god Vertumnus. As a shape-shifting and vegetation god he seems to fit with the Green Man.

      I personally don't know of any artwork that is known with certainty to depict Vertumnus, but your theory certainly sound plausible!

    These " Green Men " Faces were carved by Great artists of the Priestly Druids. The Celtic and Germanic peoples throughout all of Ancient Europe and beyond carved into HUGE trees as land markers and information stands to let a traveler know who this certain land belonged to and what to expect etc. Etc...

    The Green Man is the center character in the second written, surviving work of English Literature, taught in many liberal arts colleges. It’s not an unproven, bewildering concept.

    • @TIMOTHEVS
      @TIMOTHEVS  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi lynne1609, thanks for you comment.
      I'm not sure how to react to it though. You seem to be making two claims:
      ❶ The Green Man is not an unproven concept. = The Green Man is a proven concept.
      What do you mean by this? Do you believe the Green Man is an existing creature/entity? Or do you just mean that the concept has in fact been mentioned and depicted in the past?
      ❷ The Green Man is not bewildering.
      Does the Green Man being talked about in very old sources mean the concept of the Green Man cannot be bewildering? Sources, I might add, that are centuries younger than the oldest foliate head sculptures that have survived? How do you conclude A from B?

      The Green Man might not be bewildering but Lynne's comment certainly is.

    I think it has to do with our eternal connection to nature; we are biological beings and can never escape that; it' almost like man constructing religions wanted some remnant of insurance that we yielded to and respected nature expecting mercy. Nice Mask

  • @bouncycastle955

    Isn't the green man thought to have predated the Roman empire by thousands of years? Its commonly dated to 3000-4000 BCE

    • @robertmcgregor8639
      @robertmcgregor8639 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The concept and what the green man represents is as old as human thought. The green man primarily represents nature, so an animistic spirit of nature came into thought way back when like 100,000 years ago lets say from their religion slowly evolved into proto indo european religion which birthed many religions those of celts, Britons, romans, norse which all have a similar god/spirit based on nature and wildness.

    I think the Green Man was something that people (there was also a green woman, in some depictions) dressed up as, at certain times of the year-- something so simple and traditional that there wasn't much of a need to give a formal name to it, or write about it, or explain it. Just an anthropomorphic personification of the vegetation. Alternatively, a common hallucination from psychotropic plant ingestion.=)

    The green man is not roman. Try Gaul and the deity Esus

    • @TIMOTHEVS
      @TIMOTHEVS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't really see any similarity between the reliefs we call Green Men today and the two reliefs of Esus! They show a man from head to toe in side view cutting branches, not a face in frontal view.

    • @jmnkt
      @jmnkt 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure what you mean by “Green Men today”. The Green Man is a Teutonic deity who was the protector of the woods and nature. He is depicted with foliage around his face originating from his mouth.

    • @TIMOTHEVS
      @TIMOTHEVS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jmnkt When I said "Green Men today" I meant the ones you can still see today on buildings and churches from the Middle Ages until the early 20th century.
      May I ask what your source is for the claim that the Teutones worshipped such a Deity? (I mean a source from antiquity of course)
