Actually, Julie Andrews studied voice extensively since she was a little girl (if you don't believe me, read her autobiography "Home"). She was classically trained by a former opera star. So, she has been trained. I love her voice. I almost cry when I hear her sing on old recordings. The loss of most of that voice is one of the most tragic things ever to happen in the realm of music, I think.
What an extraordinary performance by the great, talented and forever beautiful Julie Andrews! Her glorious voice soars high like that of an angel! Nobody has ever sung Christmas carols as beautifully as Dame Julie Andrews! What we hear in this video is definetely The Sound of Christmas! Congratulations, dear Julie, on this perfect, heartfelt rendition! Thank you for the joy you have brought to the world!
Incredible, incredible, incredible. No one compares. Beauty, class and a voice of an angel. A true lady. Have enjoyed all since I was a child in the 1960's.
Julie Andrews' glorious voice is perfect and really is the sound of Christmas! Singing as beautifully as ever, she looks dazzling, elegant and radiant and performs brilliantly, thus touching our hearts with her art.
Julie Andrews - She's amazing! We're singing this in choir, and on the glooooooooooooooooooooooooooooria (xD long one) part, I have to take a breath halfway through because I'm out of air... how does she do that? I love the movie.. The Sound Of Music. It's a classic!
A goosebump-inducing medley of two sacred Christmas carols, with stirring lead vocals by Dame Julie and magnificent orchestral and choral backing. CHRIST IS BORN!!
it's nice to notice how her voice gets lower as time goes by. it was SO high in her teenage years, then it was absolutely flawless at her Broadway/movie star years, and here it's more grown up, less "coloratura soprano". she sounds almost like a mezzo. wonderful still. wish she could sing nowadays. I love Julie Andrews SO MUCH.
Heard this on Music Choice's "Sounds Of The Seasons: Classics" channel and just had to hear it again. The great Julie Andrews...one of the few who sounds as good if not better live than recorded in a studio. Often imitated, never duplicated.
@deltaA320 It's spelled "in excelsis," and in Latin it means "in the highest." I believe -- although it's been a few years since I studied Latin -- that she is pronouncing it correctly. I just love Julie Andrews so much.
Let me make this quite known before I say what I intended to: I very much so like Julie Andrews voice, going back at least as far as her performance in Mary Poppins, and continue to be inspired by her talent. In this instance, however, when I heard her pronounce 'excelsis' in this song like 'ihks-CHEL-sihs' instead of 'ehks-shEHL-sees' (which, correct me if I'm wrong, is the correct way to pronounce it), my tongue caught in my throat; I've always been taught to pronounce it 'ehks-shehl-sees'.
just when I thought it was impossible for me to love more Julie Andrews and Christmas.. I'm bursting with Christmas spirit and glee!! I LOVE JULIE ANDREWS!!! PERIOD!! :)
the beginning is ding dong merrily on high the christmas bells are ringing ding dong heaven and earth reply with angel voices singing gloooooooooooooria sing glory to the highest i dont know what she sang. Amazing voice though
The quintessential Christmas voice. Reminds me of the paintings from my childhood of a stable, palm trees, and a crystal star in a clear night sky. Thank you! (Where was this concert and why is it not televised annually???)
@ChronoGXay interesting catch! I thought about it too, and her christmas album she sings it as "inks-shell-sis" I believe in latin both can be said and both are correct. However, this one is more proper and she may have decided to change it to the more formal version since this is a prestigious event. However, only Ms. Andrews would really know why...!
Is this a common version of the lyrics or is it unique to Julie Andrew's singing? I knew it as "Ding dong merrily on high in heav'n the bells are ringing, ding dong merrily the sky is riv'n with angels singing"
The traditional Latin version is not the traditional version. She definitely sings in an American accent. For example, she says "Hosanna" in an American way.

She was 100 percent classically trained and getting ready for study in Italy before broadway came calling.
i love home!! also her voice is so amazing i can't get over her talent
This song was HUGE in the 90s. My Chorale sang it from 1992-96
What an extraordinary performance by the great, talented and forever beautiful Julie Andrews!

Perfect!
Thanks for posting!! In 1992 we got Julie Andrews and Neil Diamond, this year it's the BackStreet Boys. Oh how the mighty have fallen.
+moonraker7711 haha i know right, shameful to have a boy band from the 1990s with less than musical abilities to represent such a great evening.
Incredible indeed!!!!!

@deltaA320 It's spelled "in excelsis," and in Latin it means "in the highest." I believe -- although it's been a few years since I studied Latin -- that she is pronouncing it correctly.
I just love Julie Andrews so much.
Queen!
Lovely!
The best actress
She sang "hosanna in excelsis" which is the Latin translation and is what is usually sung in churches.
Love...

the beginning is ding dong merrily on high the christmas bells are ringing ding dong heaven and earth reply with angel voices singing gloooooooooooooria sing glory to the highest i dont know what she sang. Amazing voice though
To all the negative commenters - Julie Andrews has had to deal with a terrible aftermath of throat surgery. She's fortunate to be able to sing at all.
❤️❤️❤️
MY HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERO ! :x :x
nothing like christmas in july
The quintessential Christmas voice. Reminds me of the paintings from my childhood of a stable, palm trees, and a crystal star in a clear night sky. Thank you! (Where was this concert and why is it not televised annually???)
I think I'm in love
Beautifull...all the time the best.....really she "is a classy lady"
Michel8etoile
Oh does she ever
4:14 is my favorite part!
my chorus teacher is making me sing this song and the Gloria part sounds hard
Trust me it is. My choir teacher is making me sing this song and it took me like 5 tries to get that part all in one breath.
Good luck! My director shot it down because not enough people are ready to not breathe during the Gloria.
+Andrea Barrios lol I know right you run out of breath quickly
+Elizabeth Peek XD ur lucky my teacher won't even care LOL
Tanisha Arkoi, that sucks. I'm sorry to hear that. Good luck. What are you singing? SAB?
You know, I can't help but notice resemblances between Julie and Adele.
@weathirly1234 This was before. He vocal surgery was in 1997.
Is this a common version of the lyrics or is it unique to Julie Andrew's singing? I knew it as "Ding dong merrily on high in heav'n the bells are ringing, ding dong merrily the sky is riv'n with angels singing"
@feeltheillinois i agree
.....I wish she had been my mom.....
Anyone have a HQ version of this?
The traditional Latin version is not the traditional version.
She definitely sings in an American accent. For example, she says "Hosanna" in an American way.
What are the names in the front behind julie Andrews?
the ultimate showdown, would be between Julie Andrews and Whitney Houston, COULD YOU IMAGINE!! I think Julie could take Whitney!
@Shamsithaca - Is it? Well then, I certainly apologize! ^^"
is she saying " in excelshies"?
