I purchased the CX-5 Sport automatic and I couldn't believe it when I received 35 mi/ gal driving 60-65 mph with the AC on. Also, obtaining 30-29 mi/gal in the city. This car is amazing.
My parents bought the 2014 gt with tech package will be picking it up tomorrow I test drove it and I fell inlove immediately can't wait to drive it more...
I'm a huge Honda fan too, btw. I've owned a 5th gen accord, 3rd gen integra gsr sedan, an 01 3.5RL, and now a 1st gen TSX :)Great Porsche review too, it's a pity the sound levels didn't work out during the interior shots in the second half. Keep doing your thing!
They are a holdover from when I weighed 155lb. I'm now closer to 140lb. Would you believe they were purchased in 2000? Banana Republic used to make some pretty tough stuff.
I did the research, those recalls were hardly a big deal. A supplier screwed up some parts. And Ford handled it correctly. It was the 1.6T that was affected.
SUVs are handy. And now they can be made into performance cars w/modern tech. Just because your family's needs force you into buying an SUV doesn't mean you should have to suffer through a dull driving experience. Mazda, Honda, Nissan, and others understand this, which is great news for consumers.
Ross, would you consider the CX-5 more of a "driver's crossover" than the Volkswagen Tiguan, or would you not consider them to be in the same class? Would you take this one as a daily driver over the VW?
Can you please give me some reviews? How is it in terms of maintenance and acceleration ? Or from any other aspect? Do you have diesel 2.2 AWD SkyActive? Many thanks
I got my mazda 2014 CX 5 Touring fully loaded with Technology and Bose/moonroof package. The addition of 2.5L Skyactive engine makes 0-60mph in 7s! To top it off, I got it at a very discounted price! You may want to ask me how",)
I was looking at one today for my wife. I read a bunch of reviews from about 6 months ago about transmission problems. Have you had any yet or have you heard of any?
I really like this small suv in a sea of boring suv's like the rav4 and crv. Has great style and its fun to drive (doesn't need 200hp to be fun). 31 mpg on regular is nice also. My only hesitation is resale value, I tend to only keep cars about 2 years...or less.
4.5 inches in my family Nissan Altima sedan for gound clearance - I live in fear of speed bumps:( U didn't mention the greater than 8 inches u have in the Mazda CX 5 !! How relaxing :)
LOL ROSS! The very end of the video when Ross gives the Camera man the eyes I laughed and had to rewind. Looks like Ross has been working out. Those forearms are Massive.
Same way I take other cars seriously--by driving them! I'm a big fan of performance SUVs because they do a little bit of everything. I'd obviously like a real performance wagon better (like a TSX w/the K23A1 from the RDX, or a V6 Accord wagon) but they don't sell here. People appreciate the extra room in the SUVs and the perceived safety/visibility benefits, and I don't blame them one bit.
I'm comparing a 2013 Santa Fe vs this cx 5. I'm worried that the cx is way to slow. For the same money you can get a base Santa Fe with 190hp or the 2.0 turbo with 265
As long as it isn't an Escalade ESV or Ford Excursion the third row is just an accessory :) I wouldn't recommend neither the 7 nor the 9, their rivals has much more to offer.
I would get the CR-V but that is just me. I think the Honda will be more reliable over time and hold its value better. Not to mention it's faster, roomier, and more luxurious. The CX-5's trump card is the nimble handling and the aesthetics (which are all a matter of opinion).
Escape with 1.6T or this, tough choice. Especially when you start loading them up, then the 2.0T comes standard on Escape. Love the look of the Mazda though.
For a guy like me, no. But that's because I like the flavor of Honda's ice cream, know what I mean? The two cars will circle a racetrack in about the same time, due to the CX-5's more responsive handling counteracting the HP/TQ advantage of the CR-V. I'd still go CR-V. But I own two Hondas and love them.
Not exaggerating, the plastics on cars nowadays are so thin and cheap you must compare to different models. I have an 07 Santa Fe and while the plastics are all hard, the controls and buttons in the cabin feel a lot more solid than the CX-5. I tow and haul tons of stuff, I carry firewood and rocks in my cars. I live where roads can damage most cars' suspension and steering before they go out of warranty. Yes, Mazdas do sell well here but they never last for more than two owners, rarely one.
I still hold my position that Ross is the best reviewer Roadfly ever had (Emme included!). Too bad Charlie won't give him the more elite sports cars to review. Seems a little selfish IMO. Especially because Ross nails the driving experience and feel component better than anyone. Charlie, if you're reading this, give the guy a break and let him review something with more than 4 cylinders or Buicks.
Till they bring the 173 hp diesel the base 6 speed FWD manual is the CX5 to have. It is 200 pounds lighter much quicker and gets amazing gas mileage over 30 mpg all for just over 20k. It is the best all around ah "car" for that price period.
Not quite in the same class. The Tiguan is for people who really want a VW and the additional character that entails. It isn't as competitive at the real 'SUV' stuff that the CX-5 and CR-V are great at. I see the Tiguan as a lifestyle choice.
In two words: power delivery It's not linear at all...it's dead below 3k rpm, and dead above 5k. It's more finicky to keep in its 'sweet spot' than any 'peaky' Honda, and the torque steer is just ridiculous. At higher speeds it's better, and the chassis/brakes are good. But the engine/transmission is just a PITA to live with on a daily basis. I'd sooner daily a GTI and I don't especially like those either.
it is the drivers compact SUV in all areas wexcept power. Fine for a base engine but for everyone else....Mazda has a 189 hp 2.5L Sky-Active coming hte new 6---which should be dropped in here too. It weighs more then the 6 will, so it needs this engine.
hey ross do u guys every talk to jessi now that she is a big baller at motor trend? ps charlie romero is hilarious and the c30 volvo track test video proves it. i like the "girly civic driver" prob the best comment ever made on a youtube car review/test.
As opposed to Emme Hall he's very monotone. I find myself falling asleep while watching his reviews. He's not lively enough, almost seems like he dreads his job. His voice is very soothing better suited for other uses.
This car is built like crap. Having read the excellent reviews online, we checked one out and left in less than 15 minutes. Everything, from the door handles to the wiper controls to the radio buttons, felt like they would last no longer than 2 years. This thing is definitely overrated and in my opinion, the car might zoom along and be great on fuel, I need something with more power and that can handle more than your typical Mazda 3. We'll be checking out the new Santa Fe shortly.
That's very nice of you to say! We have a bunch of videos coming up that will make your wishes come true...
I purchased the CX-5 Sport automatic and I couldn't believe it when I received 35 mi/ gal driving 60-65 mph with the AC on. Also, obtaining 30-29 mi/gal in the city. This car is amazing.
Before watching the video, I'm thinking "that car is going to look huge."
That's great, Ross! I like to give credit where it's due. I'm a firm believe that quality work should never go unnoticed.
Thanks for the kind words, Honda Bro. And I think the audio on the Porsche vid is straight now.
Finally the CX-5 in roadfly! Actually I was expecting Emme to review it, but ross did a very good job, I really can't complain, thanks for the review!
This is my favorite review along with tfl of the Mazda cx5
Sat in a CX-5 (for me) and a Juke (for a friend) yesterday. Juke's too small for me but I'm liking the Mazda... Gonna test drive it later today.
Ross. You just sold a car....another great impartial review which raised my comfort level about this Mazda vs competition...
Nice review and car!
How did you do it? I was looking to buy the cx5 touring fully loaded too. I love the 2014 u can feel the power compared to the 2013
Seems like your request has been answered, because he has driven some nice cars as of late.
Thanks for video. Single gal here and in the market for new vehicle, small SUV. This was helpful. Thanks!
Little Ross does it again!
Really nice video, man. So much better than the one I just watched of two tough guys mugging for the camera and being macho.
They are a holdover from when I weighed 155lb. I'm now closer to 140lb. Would you believe they were purchased in 2000? Banana Republic used to make some pretty tough stuff.
Then be a day off warranty and on a flatbed.
I did the research, those recalls were hardly a big deal. A supplier screwed up some parts. And Ford handled it correctly. It was the 1.6T that was affected.
SUVs are handy. And now they can be made into performance cars w/modern tech.

mpg is by epa, not mazda marketing department @Yanick Levasseur
Allright Ross! Told us your real world MPG. Thumbs up.
Ross, would you consider the CX-5 more of a "driver's crossover" than the Volkswagen Tiguan, or would you not consider them to be in the same class? Would you take this one as a daily driver over the VW?
So the fact that he is getting 21mpg means he floors it at every light. I have a CX-5 and I still drive really aggressively and I still get 29.7mpg
Can you please give me some reviews? How is it in terms of maintenance and acceleration ? Or from any other aspect? Do you have diesel 2.2 AWD SkyActive? Many thanks

Another great review, Ross. This really looks like a very well build and 'usable' vehicle, unlike the pointless CX-9.
I was looking at one today for my wife. I read a bunch of reviews from about 6 months ago about transmission problems. Have you had any yet or have you heard of any?

Nice review, keep it up!
Just got one and love it!!!
This seems underpowered do they offer a larger engine and what are the transmission options?
You should review the CX-5 2016 upgrade - refresh. Even better.
nice review....keep up the good work
4.5 inches in my family Nissan Altima sedan for gound clearance - I live in fear of speed bumps:(
U didn't mention the greater than 8 inches u have in the Mazda CX 5 !! How relaxing :)

SOLD!

Did you mean CX-7?
The CX-9 is a pretty decent 3-row crossover that drives very well. It's just outdated now.
I'm comparing a 2013 Santa Fe vs this cx 5. I'm worried that the cx is way to slow. For the same money you can get a base Santa Fe with 190hp or the 2.0 turbo with 265
Best vehicle in its class!
It's still LESS storage than a CRV. I don't consider that particularly useful, does it have any advantages over the Honda?
As long as it isn't an Escalade ESV or Ford Excursion the third row is just an accessory :) I wouldn't recommend neither the 7 nor the 9, their rivals has much more to offer.
CX-5 vs. Ferrari 458. Roadfly must have an interesting comparison test that is still under embargo.
Great review
i thought they where going to apply the sky activ diesel to this model? :C
I really dont know what car your driving mine in the city get 28. 2 above what the sticker says.
Maybe not in Chicago but in an area where you actually need an SUV they do.
Great review. However, you lost a lot of cred when you called the Juke "normal." Oops.
Best mazda aside from miata? What about Speed3, RX-7 and RX-8?
I would get the CR-V but that is just me. I think the Honda will be more reliable over time and hold its value better. Not to mention it's faster, roomier, and more luxurious.
The CX-5's trump card is the nimble handling and the aesthetics (which are all a matter of opinion).
This CX-5 kicks the Tribute in the dust! Didn't this also replace the CX-9 Jr (aka CX-7)?
I'm sorry but since when was a car styled like the juke normal?
Escape with 1.6T or this, tough choice. Especially when you start loading them up, then the 2.0T comes standard on Escape. Love the look of the Mazda though.
Good review.
What did u not like about MS3?@Ross Rapoport
great review, please review the kia cadenza
For a guy like me, no. But that's because I like the flavor of Honda's ice cream, know what I mean? The two cars will circle a racetrack in about the same time, due to the CX-5's more responsive handling counteracting the HP/TQ advantage of the CR-V.

The Santa Fe is in a different class than the CX-5, you should compare the CX-5 to the Tucson and the Santa Fe to the CX-9.
Good review and good jb
"Vertically challenged" HELL YA BROTHER!
once they put a more power engine in it to match the handling itll sell even more
he is the only person i have found that has liked this car. interesting....

Yeah. There is a new 2.5 engine that cranks out 185hp for 2014.
how u do it?
Hear that "whoosh" sound up in the sky? That's "the point," sailing right over your empty head.
Because the diesel is not offered in the US.
Till they bring the 173 hp diesel the base 6 speed FWD manual is the CX5 to have. It is 200 pounds lighter much quicker and gets amazing gas mileage over 30 mpg all for just over 20k. It is the best all around ah "car" for that price period.
Maybe consider branching out like Steve Hammes (for Yahoo Autos?) for a little extra $ and opportunity.
I test drove the Mazda and ended up with a Tiguan. Fully loaded the cx5 was a dog up hills.
Nice, if we could only get the Euro Diesel here.
Not quite in the same class. The Tiguan is for people who really want a VW and the additional character that entails. It isn't as competitive at the real 'SUV' stuff that the CX-5 and CR-V are great at. I see the Tiguan as a lifestyle choice.
i see@Ross Rapoport
Great looking car but please more horsepower
note to editor: the cheesy background music is distracting
The MANUAL fwd gets 35 mpg hwy. The AUTOMATIC gets 32.
Never driven an RX-7. RX-8 was very disappointing, as was the MS3.
As of date
Ford Escape: 3 recalls
Mazda CX-5: 0 recalls

My daily driver is a mk6 gti and it is great but for suv's i will take the cx-5
Guess he forgot to mention there is no room in the back for kids on child seats. I drive mine in my wifes driving position.
hey ross do u guys every talk to jessi now that she is a big baller at motor trend? ps charlie romero is hilarious and the c30 volvo track test video proves it. i like the "girly civic driver" prob the best comment ever made on a youtube car review/test.
The FWD gets 35 mpg hwy.
This guy's voice is so soothing... It puts me to sleep. But I like Emme better.
he said its far less normal...he didn't say it is normal.
150 HP trying to catch up to a 458 Italia, that's hilarious!
The armrest (at least here in Israel) has a place for an IPHONE. That is why your phone is not fitting below the Climate Control.
Boring car but an excellent presentation as always. Thank you.
Nice pants? They look like pj bottoms. Wink
whu doesn't anyone test the diesel it's so much faster
the interior is nice, but i wouldnt go about it being the nicest seen, its not thats spectacular lol.
As opposed to Emme Hall he's very monotone. I find myself falling asleep while watching his reviews. He's not lively enough, almost seems like he dreads his job. His voice is very soothing better suited for other uses.
ur CUTE sized ross x)
I would rather have a Sportage
2014 mazda
