~~~ Lyrics ~~~
Eg var meg så ven og fager ei møy
Med stimoder vond, mi moder ho døy
Ho skapte meg om til eit svær og ei nål
Og sende meg av ti kongens gård
Og vreida mi stimoder kjende mest
Når alle dei gillaste lika meg best
Ho gav meg ein ham som ulve grå
Ho svor meg til einsam i skogjen gå
Og aldri blir eg heil og god
Før eg fær drukkje min broders blod
~~~ Lyrics in English ~~~
I was a very fine and beautiful maiden
With an evil stepmother. My mother had died.
She transformed me into a sword and a needle
And sent me off to the King’s estate.
The wrath of my stepmother grew
When all the fine people loved me most.
She gave me the hide of a grey wolf
And forced me to go into the woods alone.
And I would never be whole and good
Before I had drunk of my brother’s blood.

The step mother made the girl into a wolf (after several other cruel curses) and she could only break it by drinking her brothers blood. The girl/young woman wouldn’t do that but when she after lonely years living in the forest as a wolf later met the stepmother again she killed her and by that unknowingly she broke the curse she had been put under because the stepmother was pregnant with her half brother.

I wish it was. Most countries unfortunately sing in English because they adore America... Great to see Norway has some selfrespect this year! Great song!
@@SerreplantjeAre you dense? What America? I don't know which world you live in, but English is a universal language at this point. It has nothing to do with 'america'. It is undeniable that English is the leading language. What can you expect from writers other than to be heard and give a comprehensible piece of art to their general audience?
@@Excog_ You are rude, there is no need for that. A lot of meaning and the melodic sounds of different languages are lost when they are compulsievly translated to English. I didn’t understand for example German when I was little but I was happily singing Ein bisschen Frieden when they won. If you truly are interested in the lyrics of other languages it’s not very difficult today to search for a translation or some text explaining the lyrics. Let Europe keep our cultures and languages no matter how much English is a global language these days! By the way English has many words derived from Norwegian norse as well as Danish and Swedish norse, we are a big contributor to your everyday language. Are = er, wife = viv, knife = kniv, husband =husbond(e/i), scathe = skade, law = lag, loan = lån, steak = steik, take = taka, scrape = skrape, shake = skake, fellow = felagi, lad = ladd, happy = happ, loose = lauss, cake= kaka/kake, they = dei, egg =egg. And many many more!!
This is what Eurovision needs! Rock elements with an ethnic theme and a nordic language. My winner unless something really surprising comes out later

This is by far the best musical composition of this years Eurovision. That melody is impeccable

Switzerland 🇨🇭? U are jerks
For those who doesnt understand what the song is about:
Gåte bases their music on traditional music, vocal folk music with texts from very old times. "Ulveham" is based on a text from the Middle Ages. The song is a story of a young maiden that undergoes a series of injustices, but by upholding justice and goodness, even in the toughest trials, she triumphs over evil forces and breaks the curse placed upon her.
A stepmother is very jealous of her stepdaughter who everyone loves and thinks is very beautiful, so the stepmother tries to turn her into different things by casting a spell on her….a needle, a knife, a sword. Whatever she turns her stepdaughter into, people still like it, so in the end she casts a wolf spell on her and banishes her into the forest, and the only way she can get out of the bewitchment is to drink her brother's blood. Thats how the stories were from that time. Later, the evil stepmother goes into the forests and meets the wolf (stepdaughter) and the wolf rips out the heart of the stepmother and eats it, and then it turns out that the stepmother was pregnant with her half-brother, so she drinks her brother's blood and becomes free from the spell.
It is simply about free yourself from someone who has power over you, and you do it on your own terms.
The way she sings her "shouting notes" is from traditional Norwegian folk music and can be described as some kind of calling sound «lokking», a sound which is supposed to reach far in nature (forest or mountain) so it needs to be loud. Its kind of a Scandinavian yodling-sound used also to call for a herd (sheep, cows etc) but also a calling sound used in folk tradition or by super natural beings like the «Huldra» to «trick» humans and animals to appear in the forest/mountains.
Wow, ancient tales are so brutal and sophisticated in their brutality. But it was super interesting to know. Thank you for the explanation. The song sounds different to me after knowing this.
Thanks for that context! I think I love this song even more now
probably the most detailed, sensible and interesting Eurovision Song Contest-related comment I've read anywhere (and believe you me I've read a few)
I recognized the story from the Swedish band "Garmarna" and their song "Vedergällningen" from the 1990s. Only in that story it is a young man, rather than a maiden who is put under the spell by the evil stepmother. After drinking his brother's blood he turns into a "Knight, bold and good."

YESSS!!!
Norwegian language is so beautiful
Thank you si nice ! Norway Gåte Ulveham ,Many people are not aware of what she actually sings, which in my opinion is a cruel text from the old days. And i am from Norway ! The text copied from newspaper today:
She summarizes "Ulveham", based on an old medieval ballad, as the story of an evil stepmother who casts a curse on her stepdaughter - who turns into a wolf running in the forest forever. She only loses her wolf's hide if she drinks her own brother's blood.
"There will be a kind of happy - but cruel - ending when she meets the stepmother on horseback in the forest, throws herself at her, rips out her heart and drinks the blood. Because the stepmother is pregnant with her brother - thereby the curse is lifted.

Теж сподобалось. Хоча про Ґоте знаю, ще з часів коли вивчав норвезьку. Щоправда, у їхньому випадку норвезька то як мертвому кадило. I can't recall where I drew this from. It was years ago. Indeed, having checked 'kara tu omna', for example, I see people mention Nordmøre and Trøndersk. While in case of Ulveham even my B1 level in Bokmål is sufficient for some basic comprehension. 12 points from Poland 💞
I cry every time I listen to this. I'm just so overwhelmed with emotion. I'm a long time eurofan, and this is the first time I'm so touched by an ESC entry! If this isn't top 5, I don't know what is. I mean I would like to think this is the winner, but I understand that it may be a bit too underground for the mass voter. But I will vote the hell out of it!
Cheers from 🇺🇦
Same here! This needs our votes! From all of us!
Same! I like Netherlands, Ukraine, Belgium and Croatia entries, but all my votes are going for Norway. Because the song is out of this world! Goosebumps and tears
So happy Norway decided to sing in their own language! Norwegian is such a beautiful language and the combo between metal, electronic music, beautiful melodic vocals and folk is absolutely unique and spectacular!
Norska? forstår absolutt ingenting

Norge har mange språk
Even better that it's in a native dialect as well!
In first 5 second I knew it will be my favourite and here I am stuck with a song on repeat after long time. I'm so proud of you, Gåte. Also I'm proud of you Norway for sending this masterpiece. Easily, my favourite ESC entry EVER. I'm rooting for you, and I wish you good luck. Love from Serbia! Thank you!

WOW...just WOW! Sorry Norway, this is way too good for ESC. They won't even be able to grasp and understand its sheer beauty and intensity.
You called it! It was to good for them to comprehend
This is breathtaking. The more I watch it the more I want Gåte to win it all. Heavily rooting for Norway this year!!!

Kjære Norge❤❤❤❤❤
At every Eurovision, I have only one certainty: that I will find myself rooting for a Scandinavian song 🥹🫂 I love how this group manages to blend typically Nordic sounds and atmospheres with powerful metal sounds. When I listen to this song, I perceive the majesty of the nature that is an integral part of Norway, and I imagine the Norse gods that are deeply connected with it... 12 points from Italy! 🎉
