I had such an enormous blast doing this collab with Kevin! Clannad is so important to me, so you can imagine how hard it was to edit this and not want to cry every single time. Hope you all enjoy what we had to say! 🙂 - Kaze
Clannad holds a very special place in our hearts... It's a masterpiece. That's how it should be summed up. Felt like we were growing with Tomoya through highschool.... Falling in love.. Having a family..... Loving n losing..... We experienced it all
I'm so glad that Clannad video essays are still being made to this day. Kyou is easily my second favorite girl right after Nagisa and you guys really did her OVA (KyouVA?) justice
Clannad is one of those anime that I will always hold dear to my heart every time I go back and watch it. Its theming is incredible, its lessons it teaches are so well executed and most importantly, it touches me emotionally... evokes beauty with sorrow in a way that has your heart, you feel for these characters deeply and resonate with them throughout. And even after experiencing most of what KEY has to offer including Little Busters, Kanon, Angel Beats, etc., Clannad is STILL one my favourite pieces of media.
As someone who read the visual novel before watching the anime, I felt the same way you did about Kyou's OVA. The prolonged, gut wrenching, and helpless feeling her route gave me and the message it delivered when the clouds finally parted made it my favorite part of the game. The OVA, in comparison, feels rushed, and because of that the melodrama becomes a little too much to bear. I always thought it was a bad choice to try to condense a story that I loved primarily because of how long it spends kicking you in the stomach, and I still do, but you both put into words so many reasons why this wasn't a wasted effort. This video serves as a great reminder that KyoAni always puts their best foot forward. Amazing job both you and Kaze! Also, I think it's funny that this ova has Tomoya being drawn in the after story style after the time skip. I remember reading that they did it because it's what the staff was used to, but I could be wrong. It's a fun thing to notice regardless
Clannad. Easily one of my absolute favorite visual novels along with Muv Luv, and one of my favorite pieces of media ever. The story is just so intrinsically human with its story telling and themes. Reading it was one of the best decisions I've made since it hit me in a way no story has done in a long time
I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only person that Clannad: Afterstory changed. For me it helped me get rid of my depression, repair my relationship with my mom, and learn what a pure romantic relationship is supposed to be umongst other things. How'd it change you? (anyone that reads this is welcome to respond)
Best anime I've watched - period. Man it hit my feels hard, so hard in fact, I now can't even bring myself to re-watch it. It doesn't feel right. I just break down immediately when I try to do so. Maybe in some years time, I'll be able to share this with someone else. Art can change your life and this show proves it.
Clannad was the first anime series I watched, and even after watching hundreds of series, it's still up there as my favorite. There is just something magical about the anime... from the story, the characters and their development, the soundtrack, and the life lessons it teaches. Family is a central theme that this anime conveys well, along with maturity (with love and responsibility when Tomoya has to provide for his family) as well as the importance of forgiveness. And while there is so much anime i have yet to watch, I can't help but return back to where it all began to experience it once more.
The pain is prolonged in the visual novels, It was so painful but I never regretted taking Kyou's route. Because the moment you see that smile at the end it was all worth
Clannad after story is a true masterpiece it teached tomoya who thought his dad was never there for him how much he actually cared for him. Since its april you could focus on making a video about your life in april after i rewatched it, it has teached me the meaning of how some things can stay in peoples hearts forever
Excellent video! I love Clannad so much. I think that moment with Sunohara is so good for him too. Like we always see Sunohara as flirting and pretty much harassing girls throughout the show. The moment where he stops Kyou from doing something he knows she doesn’t want to do, when he’s flirted with her dozens of time is always powerful to me. Like not to give Sunohara a ton of credit, he’s a pervert right? But I think it’s a standup moment for him. Also shows how socially aware he is and how Kyou’s emotions aren’t as hidden as she thinks… her sister Ryou probably knows if even Sunohara knows. So, she’s being selfish.
Sunohara might be dumb most of the time but during rare moments he can be the most mature and sensible individual there. Glad to see Sunohara getting some recognition, he is absolutely great!
In my opinion, the fact that we already know that Tomoya won't end up with any of the sisters really makes this feel more special. Although this episode gave such a depth to them, that makes us almost root for Tomoya to stay with Kyou, in the end it was just not meant to be, and we knew that. I still remember the episodes on the first season where Nagisa was sick and almost never appeared for some episodes. During this time, every girl on the show was fighting for Tomoyas attention. The episodes kept getting messier and louder, until Tomoya, with just a simple act of kindness towards Nagisa made it all stop. What they had was so simple, yet so special and true that no one could deny that they just were meant to be together. No one could compete with what those two had, and it wasn't something they could just force. It came out so naturally that all they, and me, could say is: that is love. It was at this moment I realised Clannad was something special, and I wasn't just watching any show, and boy was I right. I feel like this perfectly shows why, even though they had a lot together in this OVA, it just wasn't meant to be.
Still hasn't been another series that has pushed the envelope of romance anime as far and heartbreaking that Clannad has. It's without hyperbole a masterpiece and has still remained my favourite piece of fiction after nearly 10 years.
It's quet interesting idea, but Clannad story is not working like that. Don't forget about original visual novel where Tomoya can ends up with every five main girls and one side. Every route/ending is actually happend, thanks to Ushio and Illusianary world and of course execly they made true end of After Story happend. Anime has the same story, so we can say this two OVA is really happend (and Tomoyo After too), and even more. From anime was cut off many important information about light orbs and other worlds so we can't say how many worlds even exists.
The main Clannad story made an average impression on me, since I never liked Nagisa much. But the two OVA episodes, especially Kyou, which I wisely left to watch last, elevated this series to godlike level, together with my beloved OreGairu and Sound! Euphonium. An awesome review, both of you, and the best possible way to end a series, in my case.
It's really too bad people within social media expressed such discontent to writer Jun Maeda after The Day I Became a God he stated he'll never write for an anime again although he would like to compose music for one. For Maeda, Clannad was his magnum opus, the guy understood the depths of human psychology, what attachment means and the bond between family, especially between mother and daughter. He knew how to reach into the inner most depths of the human soul and leave a ticking time bomb.
I still can't even slightly understand how people on social media could treat the genius himself - Jun Meada. I rage so hard everytime I remember that myself... This humble guy who wrote and composed literal masterpieces (stories and music) able to touch hearts all around the world - and he was treated like garbage just because his newest work wasn't as good as previous ones. He even had to have a heart transplant (it is one of major plot twist in his another work - "Angel Beats")... I can't even imagine the scale of how ungrateful those haters are. He has given us so much good through his art, and people are repaying him like this.... The worst part is that Jun Maeda himself surely feels this ungratefulness, as he has disappeared from social media and is withdrawing from the anime industry :( This situation reminds me of kicking an innocent puppy.
I watched clannad and after and story 3 or 4 times and the ova s when I was a kid and when I watched this video slot of my emotions for it came up again
I watched clannad in my teenage years aswell I watched clannad and after story and ... I admit the love triangle wasn't my thing but so much was done very well
I felt that Ryou was being selfish from the very beginning, because she knew her sister had feelings for Tomoya and she knew that he was not in love with her. But people do these type of things IRL, so that made this more realistic. Kyou had too much pride to ask Tomoya out, and Tomoya was indifferent about just about everything and anything - so he said "why not?" when Ryou asked him out. That's not good enough, and Ryou knew it up front. Tomoya was so toxic anyway, so anyone who went with him was risking serious heartbreak. Only Nagisa (and probably Tomoyo) could whip him into shape! Ah - it's just an opinion, and I respect everyone's (to a point!).
5:45 I dunno she could of communicated with her sister and not treat it that big of a deal if it was eating her up she could've shared the guy with her sister. Seems like a harem would be the most logical approach to solving this odd problem. That or at least communicating in a manner that reflects healthy adult minds.
Honestly kyou's chapter change my opinion best character in clannad from nagisa to kyou. She is the character i found the most related to. VN is still better tho... Hopefully we can have a new anime adaption of clannad with different routes.
I just got into your content and mostly the shows and there meaning is simply amazing and im sad I can only say this now when it seems like your taking a leave maybe spending awhile on a big video and just wondering have you ever seen children of the whales its exclusively on Netflix not even for a video just for casually enjoying anime on spare time
I remember really loving Kyou in the anime. Then I tried the VN and found her really abrasive. The 3rd person viewpoint of the anime also led me to feel like Kyou and Tomoya were a compatible couple. The first person perspective in the VN was pretty jarring as it made the narrated thoughts feel like they should be mine, but they really weren't what I was thinking. I'm still a bit salty *spoiler* that Ryou doesn't have a "good" route as all of her routes are failed Kyou routes. Also Kappei, screw that guy. *end spoiler*
