  • Ashbourne to Matlock Bath. Richard contemplates why he's riding on his own?
    Where is Carol?
Why we don't do group rides? These and many other questions you didn't know you wanted answered are here.

Hi Richard, all of my riding is solo, my wife has no interest in motorbikes . I like the freedom of being able to ride fast when I want or slow, stop when I want, change my route if I fancy. It makes no difference to me weather I'm on a one day ride or a tour, I just find it relaxing. How ever I do enjoy meeting up with fellow bikers and having a chat and admiring other people's bikes. Last time I rode in a group was when I bought my current bike back in 2022 and the dealer organised a ride out for people who had bought new bikes . The idea was to use the Drop off system to vary the position for every body from time to time. There were some experienced riders good lines smooth and safe, but there were also brain dead riders with no road sense or awareness of the other riders or other road users so became a danger. Never again . Luckily for me I don't mind being on my own as I also work on my own most of the time. Some times I enjoy listening to music when out on a ride. Ps I have always got on the bike from the left side.

Apologies, I really thought I had replied to your comment yesterday but don't see it here now. Its been great hearing everyone's thoughts.
Sounds like we think along the same lines regarding solo and group riding.
After reading all the comments, I've found out I am indeed strange getting on a bike from the right. 40 + years of riding and only just found out!

@@Banditmanuk the thing with riding in a group is you need to ride with a bike group that regularly meets up and follows the same rules. You'll find some groups are just not for you but another will be just fine and without those that put you off. Not all groups are the same and it definitely helps to ride with the same people rather than with strangers or randomly.
As for getting on from the right... I think there are a number of reasons why its strange. First is that the left is usually closer to the pavement. Another is that it's easier to see where you are putting your foot down if getting on from the left as the bike is leaning towards you... it's also more of a stretch so unless you can easily put both feet down on your bike, it's unlikely you'll be able to reach in a stable, confident manner. Last thing is that most people are right footed and so they are more likely to swing their right leg... like when kicking a football.

    • @Banditmanuk
      @Banditmanuk  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@PokerMuppet I would certainly agree on finding the right group of people to ride with.
As for the getting on.... I've absolutely been told in these comments, left is best. (Unfortunately with early stage hip and knee pain, I'm starting to look at what's least painful)

@@Banditmanuk What's best is what's best for YOU... F whatever know-it-all muppets have to say. Constructively, you may find the peg first option helpful? I'm a short arse and when my Tracer is loaded with luggage I can struggle to get my leg over so I sometimes hole the bars, pull front brake, then left foot on peg and step over, the extra height and space the peg offers makes a massive difference. All the best and I hope you find a way to keep riding for as long as possible.

Carol is riding with me tomorrow. We're meeting some folks doing the DGR ride from Suttons Tamworth and filming them both there and back at Triumph HQ a little later in the morning.
Carol, I, and both our lads all used to head out on the bikes together. The eldest lad had a 620 Multistrada and then a Bandit 600. He's not got a bike at the moment and lives some distance away now.

I have been a solo rider for most of my life. I do occasionally ride with my wife, but she has started riding pillion again after a few years of only riding her own bike. Bye the way thank you for the MT 10 review of a couple of weeks ago. It made me think, If you were to change the bike at this point someone would get a really great bike at a good price.
I have been riding a stop gap bike for the last 5 year but after watching you I decided to have a good look at the second hand market and have now changed to my dream bike, 6 years old 16000 miles and half the price of buying new.

I’m very much a solo rider Richard, always have been, and I like the freedom and the ability to keep my own pace and stop and have a break or take photos whenever I like. I do ride with my local IAM group, most of them are experienced safe riders though they can get a lick on occasionally. Given the choice though day trips and tours are always on my own. My wife has occasionally joined me but since we got a dog she seldom comes out😢. I have got lonely on big trips sometimes but as I’m quite social I’ve always met interesting people bikers and otherwise.😎

As for riding solo: Yes, occasionally it’s nice to have no time constraints and is perfect to clear the head after an stressful day. However,I think I prefer small group riding, with no more than 5 or 6 max with really good friends. My little group is great as we know each others riding styles and skills… Good fun 😊

Touring with a small group of friends is good. I especially enjoy the company in the evenings when you discuss the days events over a meal and a drink.
I had the Versys while I had the MT10. I just didn't ride it. It was definitely more practical. 240 mile fuel range, proper luggage, screen. I did ride it to Portugal, but unfortunately, it just didn't excite me.
I know it sounds daft, but the MT10 still has the ability to scare me. I like that it needs to be ridden carefully and with respect.

Nice Vid again Rich. Your mind clears of any other problems, once you start riding a bike, it's a feeling of freedom you cannot get with a car, even an indecently quick one. Like you, I prefer not to ride in large groups. 1,2 possibly 3 mates is fine and I'm also fine riding alone. If you make a bit of a mistake on your own (and we all do from time to time), there's no-one to see and take the p155. When I'm going for a ride, I always tend to clamber aboard from the left hand side. The same goes for getting onto a motorbike!

This appears to be Friday the 10th of May, if that's right I rode down to Matlock Bath down the Via Gellia that evening too! Although I didn't stop as it was just a final shakedown for riding to Wales the next day. Those potholes you mentioned were done on Friday the 17th. All my riding is solo, I have done charity rides like the Nottingham Easter Egg run but I don't enjoy group rides even with riders I know. My last time was with a group of experienced riders but found some of their riding to be not what I would have expected, especially prevalent, even in that group was the peer pressure overtaking, where the front ones have overtaken then the next ones feel obliged to overtake for fear of holding up the rest of the group or being left behind. Needless to say I fell behind but still rode into the destination ahead of a few that missed the turn off or got confused as to the destination. Ride your own ride is my mantra! Getting on the bike from the 'WRONG' side! BLASPHORMY! In this area you'd have been burnt as a witch for such treachery! Apart from that it's too much of an unnatural stretch for my little legs! Right you were up here on your own, a perfect time to have tried out that road to/from Riber Castle overlooking Matlock Bath. The Shad luggage is looking very purposeful and smart, oh and it's not that long ago that the waterwheel was turning, mind you I can remember that garage opposite was a motorbike dealer at one time. So my age might be mucking about with my memory! Enjoyed the ride.......although not as much as if Carol had been with you! Well I thought I'd keep on her good side! All the best. Oh and how about a shout out as you go by the bottom of our lane at 6:19 next time! 😉🏍👍🤣🤣

Never thought about getting on from the right.....must go out to the garage and give it a go when no one is looking😂. Regarding my riding preference, like some of your other posts, I generally prefer being on my own. As my wife doesn't share my biking passion, I do have half a dozen ex-work colleagues and biking friends where we do go out periodically on day long rides, but riding solo, controlling my own pace and determining when and where I want to go, is what I've always preferred. Hi Richard. In the late sixties I rode in a biker gang which when I look back was not endearing motorcyclists to the public. Up until the 1990's mainly solo riding to work and Sundays with my son on the back. I then started to ride with a quite large group on Sunday rides which I did enjoy at that time. The more recent years I mainly ride with a group of 4 to 5 on Wednesdays and that suits me better. When touring over the last 25 years I have always had at least one other person with me and sometimes 4 or 5 of us. I have always enjoyed solo rides on the country lanes around Devon. Keep safe.

Lovely little ride out. You're right, it is nice sometimes to ride alone, you can please yourself what and when you do it. I do like our group though, we all ride similar speeds and styles, and we never feel obliged to keep up if we're not comfortable with it. We always wait for each other somewhere up the road.

I love solo riding, most of mine is solo... although I very much enjoy riding with mates, I get better therapy from riding solo.
Riding with others, I have to admit, I feel safer riding with folk I am familiar with. I tend to ride quite close to the bike in front if I'm following, so I like them to be predictable. I used to ride with a lass many moons back, we'd be riding pretty fast, but always tight close together, that was fun... but I utterly trusted her ability so we never had any incidents... I'd not ride like that with unknowns.

Most of our old group have just moved on. Some changed their lives, sold their bikes. Some health reasons, some moved abroad. We had some great memorable trips. Many were organised by our friend Andy who is one of the few still occasionally riding.
I prefer the look, convenience and bike handling of having panniers rather than just a top box. Getting on and off is slightly hampered by the boxes and they will probably get boot marked. I've never been one to get on using the footpeg from the side-stand side. I'm always worried about over stressing the stand with my considerable bulk!

To misquote Groucho, I wouldn't wish to join a club that would have me as a member! Definitely a solo rider but as I live down south it's very, very early weekend mornings. By 9 am it's too busy. I've caught up on a couple of rides with groups and they're a right pain trying to get through and past them as they seem to ride to the speed of the slowest rider. I believe quite a few tour groups now give a suggested route and then meet up in the evening to catch up on the day. That seems perfectly acceptable to me. 👍. Even when riding with a friend I find you change your riding style and then you're susceptible to an accident. Of course you only mount from the left!!! 🤦😉 Ask any horse rider!
