that would be amazing. Or maybe a Benny the Butcher X Black Thought produced by alchemist album. Crowns for kings was amazing although its not produced by The Alchemist, that combo would be great.
Black Thought is such a good hiphop boy. There's just one thing: He doesn't look a thing like Jesus, but he talks like a gentleman like you imagined when you were Laslo!
Happy you reviewed this album but I disagree about it being unremarkable in Black Thought’s solo discography. This is the most vulnerable and emotional I’ve heard him be since The Hypnotic. I found the personal stories he was telling on several of the songs here to be captivating from front to back. That alone makes this album essential imo and I really feel like you’re underselling how well he and El Michels Affair mesh together. While you’re certainly correct that he’s not being pushed out of his comfort zone, he’s still delivering as well as he ever has over some stellar production across the board at the end of the day. Idk this is my favorite hip hop album of the year so far and I would recommend it to pretty much everyone
@@fort809 Well with James Corden leaving, hopefully Jimmy can take the hint to end his show, free The Roots, and put his talents into other projects like idk… Taxi 2
@@fort809 You shouldn't hold your breath. In Mo Meta Blues, Questlove said that he really enjoyed working with ole Jimmy, so I doubt that will ever happen my good friend.
no it doesn't. I thought cheat codes was a 7/10 . this was much better, like a 9 at least. more cohesive, amazing production with the live instrumentation and soul influence. so fucking good. this album stands alone.
Man, I couldn't disagree more that the Danger Mouse collab was better. I think it's okay sometimes for something to simply meet expectations and not be experimental. This is a solid, fulfilling album that compliments Black Thought perfectly. El Michels understood the assignment.
@mamba Black Thought has had an amazing year. However, I found myself wanting the tracks on Cheat Codes to have more punch and bass, which is a rare criticism for a Danger Mouse album. I found myself wanting to hear the bass and drums better across cheat codes. I feel like the instruments are a lot more crisp and audible on Glorious Game.
I wanted Danger Mouse to give Thought similar beats that he gave to Mf Doom. Those beats were so strange and dynamic while I think Cheat codes beats were too safe.
@Nathan Akpe : they were! They were stereotypical "different" beats whereas the beats he did for Doom were actually out the box. I personally think he gave Madlib a run for his money when he collabed with Doom but the beats he did for Thought sounded uninspired to me.
Exquisite review, Anthony. I listened and really got into the roots when you did a classics review of their album. Ever since then, I have enjoyed anything with black thought involved. So when I heard the singles for this thing, I was super pumped. After listening to it, I can say this is one of my favorite abstract hip hop albums to come out in the last couple of years. The wordplay and writing on this thing are incredible. Plus, the jazz production chefs kiss. Imo I would give this album a 8/10
Hmm interesting take. I'm not sure black thought is/needs to be a genre-pushing artist. Sometimes he can just flex being a hip-hop GOAT and I think that's what this album is. Just him in his element being one of the greatest living rappers of all time. It's just extremely well polished and I appreciated it a lot, I don't think it leaves much to be desired.
I liked Cheat Codes better, it was easily in my top 10 albums of 2022. this album is another great release from Black Thought but it’s nowhere near the greatness achieved on Cheat Codes
Totally agree with this breakdown. I was a bit disappointed, for the very reasons you outlined! Too predictable, easy listening, sure, but no challenges & certainly no risk taking. For me, whilst avoid comparing different projects too much, the Dangermouse collab was a far better project & album. One day I will get my hands on the DOOM Dangermouse collaboration🤣🤣🤣.
Kind of a random suggestion but I Highly reccomend Sleep Token's new record, its by far the most creative and inclusive work ive heard in metal in the last decade imo. Keep on keeping on fellow music nerd.
I was searching for the Sleep Token review when I came across this video. There were some misses but overall I really like what Sleep Token are doing creatively. The Summoning is so delicious.
One thing I will say is Fantano is a great indicator of what Hip Hop my white friends will like but that Conway review and the way he did Flying Lotus shall never be forgotten
Fantano, I wanna get a review of the Fast X soundtrack. I know it’s out of the ordinary, but it has some of the weirdest mix and mash of collabs and features. I feel like it would be an interesting review and breakdown
Hey Anthony. To answer your question, the math test will be on Friday and will cover Chapters 3-6. I also was wondering if you've done the reading for tomorrow?
I'd really like you to review one of Bobby Feeno's album. I think Flamingo & Koval (debut album) is great and Bohemia was even better. I am curious to your thoughts on this. Not a lot of people know him and I think they should.
We all want that Alchemist x Black Thought Album or Ep
also Apollo Brown & Black Thought combo
that would be amazing. Or maybe a Benny the Butcher X Black Thought produced by alchemist album. Crowns for kings was amazing although its not produced by The Alchemist, that combo would be great.
Black Thought is on quite a roll lately. (*Lately = the past 27 years or so)
Definitely underselling it
With his history and the run he's on rn it's really strange not hearing black thought in more goat conversations
Cause there's nothing to talk about lol. He is the goat. At least for me anyway.
Seriously. Best Philly rapper to ever make music, and easily top 10 of all time
Black Thought is such a good hiphop boy. There's just one thing: He doesn't look a thing like Jesus, but he talks like a gentleman like you imagined when you were Laslo!
people who know have him in their top 5 but yeah hes somehow criminally underrated

I can not escape this game even when not playing it and I am not complaining

Better than ‘The greatest Escape’ or ‘scaring the h*es’? Definitely not for me
Months later and this album is still a regular in my rotation. It deserves more respect and more love.
Honestly this just kinda feels like a victory lap after cheat codes, and i’m totally cool with that.

Cheat Codes was an 8 to 9 and one the best albums of the 2020s, it's flawless.
This is almost as good in a different lane

He pushed the genre immensly with The Roots and Cheat Codes had some genre pushing stuff.
