This is actually a carpenter bee (Xylocopa) which resembles a bumble bee but has a larger head and a shiny, almost bare abdomen. They are the ones that bore the holes in wood. It is difficult to get them to sting (from experience in a laboratory milking the venom from many kinds of stinging insects).
I've heard it's also kind of rare to see the females out and about, and that the ones which buzz in your face and act like they're hot shit when you get close to their nest are the males.

While I can agree that letting the cat mess with the bee and get stung isn’t something someone should do to laugh at, a bee sting isn’t gonna kill the cat. Just teaches them not to mess with the same insect again! If they were to purposefully injure the cat, then yes, that is animal abuse, but the owner wasn’t forcing the cat to get stung. The cat was messing with the bee itself. Not abuse.
