@@thejamesbondshow9754 It's a base layer of paint for the top coat (main colour/colours) to sit on. Sometimes it's done to prepare a surface for best paint adhesion as paint doesn't stick well to some materials, in those cases an 'etch primer' or 'plastic primer' for example may be used which is formulated to etch into or stick well to the material. But it's mainly to give a flat even smooth single colour surface to ensure that the top coat is a smooth even colour all over, exactly the same as a spray shop would with a full size vehicle.
