There are two main reasons for 'lunging' a horse... one, to try and expel some feistiness (as this bucker proved to have) and two, to remove excess air. A lot of horses learn to expand their chest during the saddling process which means the girth strap needs to be readjusted (as he did a couple of times) or the saddle could come lose enough to rotate around the horse. Trust me, it happened to me... once!.. it is no fun trying to regain control of a spooked horse when you are dangling off one side!!!
Thanks for explaining 😊
this honestly seems like honest fullfilling work and im all for it
The work is not the problem, it's the weather.
I feel like at some point every man has wanted to be a cowboy, but most people don't know how much work goes into it. I remember watching a youtube video about a chinese man who left everything to be a ranch hand in the United States, The lifestyle is very alluring.
welp, I was just complaining about my job where sometimes I get to sit down all day… great reaction and a kid seems to be a super hard worker. God bless him.
To me, boring jobs are the hardest. Time seems to stand still and insane boredom turns into depression.
I think the funniest thing to experience is seeing someone from say Florida in the north during cold weather. They have coats on at sixty degrees while we who live in northern states are in t shirts at forty degrees F.
Based on his breathing outside he is freezing. Love the dedication and the work ethic.
If you have ever experience -10 F degrees with wind it hurts, even if you have experienced it many times.
Spurs are used to signal your horse to move. That's why he took them off when he said he was done riding for the day. Also the word spur gives you a hint at their usage. To spur someone on meaning to urge or encourage someone.
It's called lunge lining a horse and it serves to warm the horse up. Spurs are worn to dig into the sides of the horse to encourage them to move. They are overused and used improperly among horsemen, in my opinion. There is a lot of wide open land in the North that lends itself well to raising livestock except for the bitter cold. Not a great environment to work in in the winter months or for calves to be born in. I can't imagine loving such a hard life but many do, my brother among them.
-10F is about -23C 😮
This is crazy, I grew up near this guy and went to college with him😂
Let him know that Brits are watching him. haha!
Spurs sit on the heel ledge of the boots and are used to communicate to the horse when riding. They're blunted edge wheels and allow you to communicate directions and maneuvers to the horse other than using the reigns.
Think of the word "cake" as in "urinal cake" ..... Except, made with food that is edible to horses. The ones I've seen were about the size of a urinal cake, a hockey puck, a deck of cards, or smaller.
I'm sure Daz and Gaynor already know this, but if you look at a map of the USA, you'll see that the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, look as if they have been stacked upon each other. All this area, from the Canadian border, to the Panhandle of Texas, is pretty much as flat as the ranchland shown in this video. This multi-state area is known as the Great Plains, and was the home of many Plains Indians (Native Americans), including such great tribes as the Crow, Shoshone (Show-SHOW-knee), Sioux (Sue), Pawnee (PAW-knee), Cheyenne (Shy-ANN), Arapaho (Uh-RAP-uh-hoe), Comanche (Come-ANN-chee), Creek, and Kiowa (KYE-oh-wuh), among others.
When they were loading all those heifers onto the truck, being the Native Texan that I am, all I could think was "Oh man, look at all those beef ribs and briskets!"
Thanks for the reply and information.
when I was a kid I lived in Eastern Washington State.
-42f !!! Oddly enough its -42c too.
Sooo freaken cold my spit froze before it hit the ground.
My family are ranchers in Nebraska and Wyoming and I got to visit my Great aunt who owned a huge cattle ranch as a kid. The type of ranch that you leave the highway and still had a 2-hour drive on her land to get to the house. I still remember playing on the ranch for the week as a kid and having to get up at like 5 AM for breakfast because that is when the day started.
Wow, that's massive. How many acres was it? 2 hours is a lot
South Dakota is rough and wild. Great video
That room with the boots and stuff is known as a mud room
When he was talking about feeding "cake" it is processed feed (hay, etc.) in pellet form. Not sweet or yummy to a person. :)
My mother was from Aberdeen. Flat and barren are the operative words
Keep in mind that the temp is in F not C which would be -23c
Wonderful! Show more!
All in a days work to put beef on American and world dinner tables.
"Come along boys and I'll tell you of my tale, of my troubles along the Old Chisholm Trail. Come Ah Ti Yi Yippee Yippee yea, Come Ah Ti Yi Yippee Yippee yea". At least that is what I remember of an old cowboy folk song about a cattle drive on the Chisholm Trail. I live in Bismarck, North Dakota, in the city but the land looks close to this just a couple of miles outside the city limits. That hill he was pointing to, hills like that are often called "buttes". Butte is a French word for knoll.
spurs are to spur the horse on with. Has nothing to do with the stirrups.
At first he warmed up the horse and make sure saddle correct. It was -20 Celsius when he videoed
If you’re getting into this you guys should watch some Trinity Vandenacre videos. He has a ton of videos about ranching culture, history, its future, etc.
imagine farming this land in the 19th century. Peat houses and dried peat burned to warm your home and cook with. No trees for wood on the prarie
My grandma was from North Dakota, and their school was many miles from their farm. Going to school in the winter they had an enclosed sleigh with a little pot bellied stove in it. She and her younger siblings would ride inside, drinking hot chocolate while her older brother had to sit outside to guide the horse! I always imagined how horrible that had to be for him on the worst days!
@@RogCBrand Tough people back then!
We raise horses just outside of Lexington KY there alot of work but we don't have nothing on theses guy we had a couple day where it was - 3 an only got up to 10 degrees but it's not that many days it gets that low. Anyway great video total respect to those guys in Montana. Been on several hunting trips a marine buddy l served in Afghanistan with lives there beautiful state. Again Appreciate the video you have a great day in the UK.😊
Daz the other morning when I started my truck the temperature reading in my dash said minus sixteen Fahrenheit.
Y'all have to watch Mav he do nature vlogs
This is why many people have these type of trucks that you guys make fun of. It’s because many of them are farmers and ranchers etc.
There's a great video featuring an amazing cowboy over in France teaching them how to use their horses to doctor their cattle in the field.
The first Spanish settlers brought their cattle and horse traditions to America in the early 1500's. I think it interesting that the modern cowboy traditions are crossing the pond the other way. I've seen videos of Dutch and English riders using western saddles.
Yes great video ❤ I worked oh dairy farm little bit years ago but not as hard as this 😊
He did that to get him to get some wildness out of him
Northern plains in the US, vast and flat (mostly). Farms all across most of the northern US will have long days like this.
He makes everything look easy.
Props to you for being up at that hour for the Superbowl. Go Eagles.
Yes spurs are used to prod the horse to move if it's otherwise not doing it.
Immensely entertaining. I'd be up for all of it, except that cold.....I'm a Florida Boy....no no no to that cold
Recall from your time in the US that -10 F is a lot colder than -10 C.
(I think South Dakota's driving age is one of those that's under 16, like 14 1/2.)
When driving a farm vehicle on private Farmland I think you only need to be 14 to operate the vehicle as long as you're only operating it on the private farmland and not on regular roads
@@dajoker1483If it’s on private land there is no age requirement. Most farm kids are driving by the time they are 8.
There are others on horseback and cattle drives so cool
13:18 He was lunging the horse to warm him up and to make sure he's respectful.
I'm only half through your video and I just went and subscribed to his channel. Love this stuff.
Super Bowl is 630 eastern time.
Yes we will start stream prior to KO. Our start time is 6. 👍🏻
D and G have you guys ever seen the movie City Slickers? This video totally reminds me of that. I love it
I have a cousin who owns a ranch and another cousin who owns a farm in eastern South Dakota. It's hard work.
Alternate title for the video "Ranching with a side of animal cruelty".
These are the kind of people libreals called dumb and uneducated. This young man is smart and hard working. They should be ashamed how ignorant.
-10 degree F
He spelled refilling wrong
Good kid with a hard work ethic. You know he didn't vote for Kamela
It's amazing how many people can turn a light hearted video into something political..
@@willvr4 Your original comment was down voted so hard it got removed almost instanty LOL. But I cant let your ridiculous "logic" slide. Who cares if he gets up at 10, which I dont even know if that's true. He works ALLLLL day. And doing meaningful things too. You are aware Biden went to sleep at 8 PM every night and frequently took naps during the day right? When they brought the bodies back from Afghanistan (that he caused) they had to wait 3 hours because he was taking a nap on the plane... Then looked at his watch multiple times during the funeral. Then when he spoke he had to read pre-written answers off a note card written by someone else. And all press questions were pre submitted so Biden's staff could formulate the answers for him to mumble. You lose all credibility trying to say Trump isn't hard working. Plenty of people are hard workers without shoveling dirt... You are aware of this right?

@@user-wr9ej6xe4j Downvotes don't count on YT. I removed it myself because I recognized the troll username and made the comment more broad.
And yeah, his staff even said he doesn't get to his morning briefings until almost 11 and then he barely even reads them. They purposely make his name REALLY BIG in certain parts so that he actually pays attention to the important parts.
This isn't new. His staff has openly said to the public. (I will not be responding further)
