    of course the only juvenile bps I have right now are either in shed or underweight so these aren't the posterchildren of what your snake should look like. but you probably didn't want to just stare at my face for the full 14 minutes. Are baby rats good for young ball pythons? I know that they’re much more fatty. Would that be considered power feeding? I know power feeding takes a good chunk of life off the snake.

    My first BP was a hatchling from petsmart. Mojave, very sweet girl to this day (just turned 3.) Took frozen forever, never interested in live, never refused a meal once I got her.
    Rescued a spider ball python around 4-5 years old, absolute nightmare. Never handled, ate frozen just fine, but would bite consistently. Rehomed to someone who could handle that.
    My third BP was a piebald I got from a convention and she's an absolute sweetheart as well. Really skittish and sweet. She's on live but I'm working on switching her to frozen.
    As a first time owner, I would, personally, suggest going for a snake that's been handled often. I found places like Morphmarket sell BPs that are hardly handled or on live and can be a nightmare for new owners.

    Thanks for the video! I would love a video on the subject of active VS "chill" snakes. I know a lot of people have complained that BP don't "really do anything" in their enclosure as opposed to colubrids or whatever, but I was wondering if it was because nocturnal/crepuscular animals are just active when we don't see them? Is it possible the enclosure has no proper temperature gradient and the animal is only comfortable in one small spot? Lacks enrichment in its habitat? I've seen your "what are the most boring reptiles" videos before but I'd love a breakdown of snakes species you've worked with and which are the most inquisitive, curious, active, how it has varied between individuals of the same species and between individuals of different species.

    My daughter is getting a BP for Christmas this year. We have a friend of a friend that rescues them and kind of works with them before rehoming. My only worry is snakes make me nervous so getting a adult first thing I think would deter me from handing it. I think as it grows from a baby I’ll feel more comfortable over time with its size since it’s like our kid and we won’t really notice how big it’s gotten. These videos are helpful since we’re specifically thinking which would be the better direction.

  • @raccoontrashpanda1467
    @raccoontrashpanda1467 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Theres no such thing as "an enclosure too large for an animal". No enclosure is bigger than the wild and if the animal is stressed by the space that just means that you haven't provided enough enrichment and hides to fill it comfortably.

    • @JobForARetic
      @JobForARetic ปีที่แล้ว

      yup basically, the enclosure is only “too big” if you are using the industry standard no recreation, sanitary as possible set-up.
      Which in itself has its own advantages, but not necessary for a pet keeper.

    I got myself what i thought to be juvenile ball python, but his birth certificate says he's from april 2020, yet he's 60cm long (23-24 inches) and weighs 195 grams (6,87 ounces). I got him from local pet shop (not a big chain, but they have like 4 shops in my city) and from what I heard they fed him pinkies, but he ate some small mouse a week before I bought him. He looks good, got some stuck shed but it falled off in new enclosure in my place, is little skinny (more triangular then oval, and I can feel his spine). I guess the didn't fed him much so he won't grow big and would be easier to sell, but when I saw him I thought he's 5-6 months old, not 20. I'm planning to slowl feed him up till he wont look skinny. Any advice? How much should he weight at his length?

    • @skylars1595
      @skylars1595 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not so good on ideal weights. I always use the rule of thumb that as long as they’re eating appropriate size meals they are most likely fine. Keep in mind sex of pythons affect size females are way bigger than males, if you’re feeding mice it’ll be smaller than one being feed rats

    • @fallenempress2679

    Price also plays a huge factor in juvenile versus adult. And sex. If you're only ever going to be interested in how awesome it looks, find a male.
    Females take longer to reach sexual maturity, so they cost more usually. When you get into pet only/sterile females, the price decreases.
    Juvenile recessives, especially females, are less expensive than adults. Same with males.
    As you get into high end designer morphs, everything is expensive. And that's the additional things to take into consideration but would have made the video long and boringggggggg.

At $2.50 a pop, frequent feedings are getting a little pricey. She's getting a bit chunky in the center, but not quite sure if she can handle a rat just yet. Any help on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    • @elissacousland44
      @elissacousland44 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Ball pythons are fully able to eat rat pinkies right out of the egg, so you'll be able to find a size that will work for you. The higher fat content in rats is thought to actually be better for them too, since they're a fuller bodied snake. It's harder to feed live rats is what I've found. They're very bitey. I feed only frozen unless I have a snake that will die without live. I would say see if you can get her to take a F/T mouse. If she does, go for F/T rat next over the live. It's just safer.

I know shedding issues come from humidity, I have switched substrates and mist more often, hopefully this will solve that problem. As far as feeding, she was eating mice hoppers when she came to me but never ate them for me, so I got her a rat pup, and she took it no problem, she has been on rat pups ever since. Ball pythons are strange snakes. You can keep them in identical conditions and feed them the same food, but they will all have their different ways. One of mine never refuses a feed, and will eat ANYTHNG, mice, rats, chicks, gerbils, ANYTHING I offer it. My other ball python will only eat mice, no matter what I do or how long it goes between meals. One of my BP's is super 'defensive' and will bite in or out of it's cage. It's brother is super tame and mild and never tried to bite, and seems super relaxed when handling. My other species of sakes I keep all act and feed the same according to their species, but the BP's are all so different.

    I think bp’s are promoted too much as easy beginner snakes. Corns are much better in the eating department and they are less temperature sensitive (can even brumate in winter). Bp’s also grow bigger and need more space, which can be difficult to heat enough safely if your home is under 75 in winter.

I think if I were to get a rehomed reptile for my first reptile would be a gamble because I wouldn't know what to look for in the snake in general.
    I always wanted snakes and T's growing up, but as an adult I don't know if I would be cut out for them. I think that once my mammals pass from old age, those would be the pets that I look into. Hopefully, by then I would have gained so much knowledge that I would be a good snake/T momma.

    After two years of eating like clockwork, my balk python has decided to pull the old “I’m not hungry” this winter. She’s not losing weight even tho it’s been almost 2 month. I still offer her food, but she just keeps refusing.

    My first ball python was a year and a half old male that was severely dehydrated and starved. Now almost 2 years later of having him *and adding 4 more pythons to the family* he is healthy as can be and a sweet heart. His only flaw, he hates males 🤷‍♀️ but he has my heart so I don't really worry about that

    When I went to my local reptile store to get my first ball python I held adorable baby snakes and then an adult to get a sense of what size they would grow to be. I fell in love with the big boi and ended up taking him home. His name is Simon and he is great.

    I think as a first time owner it's nicer to get an adult, just because babies can be more fragile and more vulnerable to mistakes (especially when it comes to beardies and leopard geckos).

      You can try braining the f/t by using a push pin through the skull then squeezing lightly. It's not the most fun thing to do but it does help. Had to do it a few times with our snakes at work. Also using tongs and wiggling the f/t around. A dark warm area for feeding seems to help a lot.

    I'm not looking for one rn, but i wanna learn more and eventually maybe start breeding. My brother already has ball pythons and are gonna start breeding when they are big enough, and if i do decide to get one i'm lucky in that sense that i will know how he treats the snakes, and as iv'e heard so far he's doing pretty good

      @Tonje770 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nightinggale6470 I'm in the EU, and in my country there are not alot of breeders, i know they are overbred in the US, but they haven't become so popular here yet, and i wouldn't just put them in minimalistic bins, i am doing proper research and am planning to make a ''snake house'' outside of the main house, so i can design the proper spaces needed for the snakes to have a good life. I never half ass stuff, if i'm gonna start breeding it's not until some years, and i am still finding information but i'm taking my time, since i have time. And it's still not a for sure thing, if they do become overbred here too in some years i probably wont start breeding at all, but time will tell

    My ball python was a PetSmart rescue, and has struggled with putting on weight since I've had him (2019) due to a birth defect. He's recently gotten super skinny again and I'm afraid to bump him to the next size up of mice since he is stunted. How should I go about it?

    • @GoHerping
