Today's Modern Food: It's not what you think - Part 1 of 2

  • This video examines the truth about our Nation's food supply. The food we buy today is the product of a business who's more concerned about their own profits than their customers health and the government regulators are looking out for the interests of the businesses rather than the American people's well being.
    -------------
    The Miami Herald wrote on June 23rd 2011, chemically treated produce, highly processed foods, and refined ingredients like white flour and sugar cause sickness and disease as well as a host of minor ailments such as digestive issues and lack of energy.
    The Herald Sun wrote on June 24th 2011, The New England Journal of Medicine published research that advised weight-watchers to cut out sugar-sweetened drinks, potatoes and refined grain foods such as white bread, white rice and low-fibre cereals. They urged people to eat more "natural" foods, such as
    On June 19, 1999 The Center for Science in the Public Interest petitioned the Food and Drug Administration (the FDA) to prohibit the use of potassium bromate, which is used to strengthen bread dough. They charged that the FDA has known for years that bromate causes cancers in laboratory animals, but has failed to ban it.
    The most common pesticide found in flour, 49% of all flour tested, is Malathion, believed to be a possible carcinogen, Neurotoxin and Hormone disruptor.
    On January 28th, 2009 the Washington Post reported, "Study Finds High-Fructose Corn Syrup Contains Mercury." The articles reports that "Almost half of tested samples of commercial high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) contained mercury, which was also found in nearly a third of 55 popular brand-name food and beverage products where HFCS is the first- or second-highest labeled ingredient, according to two new U.S. studies. "
    On July 27th, 1989 the Los Angeles Times reported, "FDA allows Genetically-Modified rBGH to Endanger Milk: FDA Ignores Evidence on Cancer Risks"
    On December 7th, 2006 the Harvard University Gazette reported, "Hormones in milk can be dangerous." The article states, "The milk we drink today is quite unlike the milk our ancestors were drinking" without apparent harm for 2,000 years, she said. "The milk we drink today may not be nature's perfect food. Butter, meat, eggs, milk, and cheese are implicated in higher rates of hormone-dependent cancers in general, she said. Breast cancer has been linked particularly to consumption of milk and cheese."
    On Feb 11th, 2009, CBS News reported, "Link Eyed Between Beef And Cancer." In feed lots across the country, beef cattle are given growth hormones to make them fatter faster, to save money. Now questions are being raised about one of the most widely-used hormones, Zeranol, a synthetic estrogen implanted in cattle. A series of tests done for the Pentagon show a possible link between breast cancer and Zeranol.
    On March 30th, 2011 Discovery News reported, "Food Packaging Harbors Harmful Chemicals" Plastic wrappers, food cans and storage tubs deposit at least two potentially harmful chemicals into our food, confirmed a new study. By cutting out containers, people can dramatically reduce their exposures to these toxins. The chemicals -- bisphenol A, or BPA, and a phthalate called DEHP -- are known to disrupt hormonal systems in the bodies of both animals and people, leading to developmental and reproductive problems, as well as cancers, heart disease and brain disorders. And both appear in a wide variety of food packaging materials.
    Because the manufacturers and the government ignore our concerns, it is going to be up to us to take charge of our nutrition and well-being.There are a few alternatives to the chemically laden foods available at your local supermarket. You can buy organic, which unfortunately because of the current economics of food production, is more expense. Or you can grow and raise your own food, which is time consuming and hard work. But you have to ask yourself, "Is it worth improving the health of my family?"
    If your diet and health is important to you, you will want to these eye-opening and heart-stopping documentaries on the truth about the foods we buy and eat every day.

I'm not totally ignorant about raising my own food. My family were farmers before coming to the US and basically my parents taught me how to plant, slaughter, and prepare meats and veggies. I hope that one day we will have community greenhouses or even plots for people to get together and grow their food stuffs.

    I used to be sensitive to eggs, could hardly eat them, then, we raised our own chickens for eggs, and now the ones I eat are our own, natural feed, they graze and forage as well in an open field. I can eat as many eggs as I want...We found out that the cage raised layers are fed a feed with coccidiostat (maybe because their conditions are so that they would be sick otherwise?). This is usually a sulfur based drug which many people are allergic to (me included).

    I have completely stopped buying processed food, even pre made bread. I buy naturally growing raw foods and I prepare them at home. I buy eggs, organic milk and butter, row meat, row fish, row veggies, whole fruit, row onions, row spices, and whole grain flour. None of that prepared and packaged food, pizza, bread, candy, cookies, tortillas, Margarine, soda, and everything under that sun that was prepared by someone else will not enter my home. If I have to eat out, I eat from the salad bar.

    i am not going to make my own flour. this is absurd. not everyone has enough money to buy that expensive stuff, or enough time and or environment to grow their own foods. Mass production is the only way for the human species to survive.

    • @akatsukiawsome13
      @akatsukiawsome13 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cooperation is the only way for the human species to survive.
      You don't have to make the flour, milk products, and produce... But it is actually pretty damn easy.
      You could pair up with people who do the other things and just give em your extras... That's how it is supposed to work.

    • @Twinkie989
      @Twinkie989 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +akatsukiawsome13 Not legal in a lot of areas. I can't own barnyard animals, outside of some chickens, where I live. I'm planting a garden with two other women on my property- which is great, but more of a novelty. Neither of them have land.

    • @oceanisler
      @oceanisler 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      akatsukiawsome13 Semantics. While we need to co-op with each other, it is unfeasible to sustain enough material for consumption without using mass production. Even if you somehow managed to distribute all of mankind into smaller factions or towns, or co-ops. The amount of pollution and wastefulness would be tenfold compared to a distro-network.

    • @akatsukiawsome13
      @akatsukiawsome13 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Loving Life and the Ocean Not necessarily- pollution and wastefulness don't happen in communities that need materials. They find out how to re-use the things already around instead of throwing/wasting materials.
      "for consumption" you are operating under the assumption that humans can only make products that last 1 month or even less. Most waste comes from single use bottles of plastic... Instead of using the energy to re-mold plastic people can use and re-use glass containers.
      Huge waste of energy and materials- shampoos and other personal care products that aren't needed and actually in some cases are bad for you
      condiments that you can make easy using a couple of ingredients already at home
      Supermarkets use a ton of light and often have no windows- waste of electricity so they can control the mood lighting and influence potential buyers to lose track of time, and so their produce looks better.
      In other words larger societies/corporations are for profit and waste a ton of unneeded power and resources, and while they do provide a good service of exchange of goods there is also a ton of unneeded clutter.
      Everyone WOULD have enough time and money for this if the cornerstore grew food on their roof. Everyone WOULD have enough time and money for this if they didn't buy 15 different soaps for "different things" when they all have the same petroleum based ingredients anyways. Everyone WOULD have enough time and money for this if they spent less time at an office job and more working from home either on the internet somehow or making products for trade. You vastly underestimate, I think, how much you can save. Why use paper towels when you can have cloth ones? Why buy curtains when you can make them for like 2 bucks? There are many smart ways to live.

    • @oceanisler
      @oceanisler 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      akatsukiawsome13 What could you use at home that is not mass produced to make _efficient_ hygiene supplies to prevent mass production?
      We see differently. While i do believe we should conserve, we must factor in all variables.
      Shampoos and personal hygiene products are a must.
      While i agree with your overall idea, we have to survive in the meantime. We cannot go from where we are today to a utopia society.
      Why use paper towels? Because they are more hygienic. They come from a renewable source, no issue there.
      And with the glass products, at home yes they are the better option, But the overall carbon footprint is greater than using and recycling plastics. IMHO we need to do what we are doing but a bit faster, conserve and find alternative sources for energy.
      Society will always barter. Thats awesome if you go the extra step to do all that, most dont.

    Start by eating "real" food, not processed foods. Most of the foods in the aisles are processed foods, such as TV dinners, pastries, canned foods, twinkies, etc. The "real" food is on the edges of the store - meats, vegetables, fruits, bread, dairy, etc. If you are spending more of your time in the aisles than the outsides, you're eating wrong. Once you start that, start going to your local farmers market and looking for organic foods. Then, if you are able, start a garden.

    Processed food should have no value. People become malnourished eating it, like me! I have to eat like ten bowls of cereal to get the daily recommended intake of some vitamins. And most of the food I eat in a day doesn't have nutrition we need. The blood tests are useless since the body balances your vitamins and minerals so you dont die of poisoning. I could have a banana/strawberry milkshake with a small full measuring cup of vitamin and mineral supplement in the morning, milk and bread for lunch. salad nuts and meat for dinner for weeks and it seems like a sensible choice to eat, and my chronic fatigue wouldn't go away. Or I'd have a massive amount like over 800% daily recommended intake of a vitamin and be lacking for weeks and months of another and suffer nutrition deficiencies. Having a powdered supplement shake could poison your kidneys and liver.

    Links to fructose do not link corn syrup in most case (except of soda possible you should make note of drinks that use Crystal fructose like vitamin water ) the syrup is blended so that the ratio of fructose to glucose is no different than sugar. The are both equally at fault. Mercury found in food is supposedly much less toixic the your typical kind(not saying it is right for it to be there by the studies done on mercury dont link strongly to food mercury in hfcs.

Also, Monsanto refuses to sell seeds for testing to independent scientists unless they agree not to publish results without Monsanto's approval, as noted in Scientific American. I got e-coli after eating out at a local restaurant/bakery. I was in the hospital for 3 days and it was not a fun experience to say the least! All of these food scares with salad ingredients etc freak me out because if I cannot get safe food without growing it in my backyard what does that say about our society?

      ecoli naturally exists in our guts. when we get sick is because we contract a strand that our immune system cannot handle. even in places where people grow their own food does things like this happen. people need to not freak out or get scared about the unknown and be thankful for modern day medicine; after all we do live much longer than our ancestors.

    • @TwoPlusTwoEqualsFive32
      @TwoPlusTwoEqualsFive32 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's funny because I know of people that have gotten sick by growing food in there backyard, because used untreated animal manurer and didn't wash the vegetables properly and got parasites, the only difference is atleast when you buy your food you know it has gone through stringent cleaning and checks, atleast in Australia we have very strict food laws.
      Food unless properly prepared makes you sick, it doesn't matter whether it comes from the garden, or from a restaurant it is not grown, cooked or cleaned in a safe manner, you can get sick.

      +Tessie Dobey ur right about that nothing is 100-110% organic, but its still safer/better than the non organic produce, just like with fresh water situation , there is no fresh water, but your better off drinking from bottled water because it has the least amount of poison, mainly from that extrogenic plastic poison container your drinking it from.
      So in a way, vegans are still making the smarter decisions, with the knowledge they have now, they will increase ahead from the ones still eating the most deadliest of the deadliest like eating processed, fast food and soft drinks only as food. Vegans still got the advantage. Until they become someday 110% raw vegans.
      Not too far, they're on the edge.

    • @jameswray50
      @jameswray50 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      jagerbomb7810 That's because it was impractical to be vegan before we had a meat industry. Meat is life sustaining in harsh environments. Being a vegan myself I don't know how I would survive if something happened to the local trader joe's and other super markets. I admit that it would be near impossible to survive in human history without meat because of our harsh living conditions that we subject ourselves to. That doesn't mean it is our intended diet though. Humans would do great an a flourishing African forest, but we migrated, if we staid we would have been fine, but humans a curious and we press on. We use our brains to survive. Now a days we have supplements (for b12 and occasionally vitamin D), and plentiful fruits and veggies. There is no reason to eat meat in modern society sense we have access to so much produce. Old habits are admittedly hard to brake, but I do it on part of the inhuman slaughter caused by excessive farming and lust for wealth. So by being vegan I do not support such inhuman industries, and I can be healthy and fit. It's a win for me, and a win for the animals.

      Kind of like if a house is burning, you can prevent monoxide poisoning if you dont breathe. But then you die from lack of energy.

    • @chrislows6012

      I recently started taking a closer look at food labels myself and I'm quite horrified myself. Not even the sugar but all the unneeded other ingredients whose names I often can't even pronounce and the amount of sodium in just about everything that's a ready meal that you just heat and eat. It's exploitation of people who don't always have the time and energy or ingredients constantly at hand to make a good meal whether it be small or large. All of this garbage also outnumbers everything that is better for you of the same variety and what is, is much higher priced. If you actually want to make use of it normally you're gonna need to really start pinching those pennies. So it's like no matter what, you're pushed into a corner and health just becomes more a damage control game than anything as these piece of shit companies that are killing people faster get richer and richer, continually push out the little guys just to limit you more as if it wasn't bad enough now. They even have the nerve to make food that's more of a treat that wouldn't be great for you anyways even worse for you. With the holidays rolling around, you're gonna be eating the crap anyways too. quite sickening
