But don't you know it's made from water hand drawn from a 2000 year old glacier that's been blessed by a shaman (who is definitely real)?! Clearly that's worth even MORE than 30 dollars 😂
I was watching another video of someone mocking Erewhon and one of the influencers literally just put an ice ball in the sink to see how long it took it to melt. So she bought her $$$$ ice and then just rinsed it down the drain. I think that almost made me madder than anything. Because sometimes I kind of think 'well, it might be fun to spend a stupid amount of money on a smoothie just as a treat to see what it's really like' but 'well, it might be fun to buy some ice and then let it melt' is not a thing that would even enter my mind.
tbh at this point I'm just genuinely impressed by erewhom because their whole thing is simply "influencers and rich people are stupid enough to waste money on something they could get for 1/10 of our price but we make them feel special so they fall for it" and it works perfectly 😂
ESP when LA has INCREDIBLE farmer’s markets! If you’re gonna spend more on your produce, get it from a local farmer! If I could afford erewhon, I’d spend it at my local farmers markets before an overpriced corporation.
I'll never understand how spending $40 on maple syrup is a flex. Congrats, it's not even the real deal and you could have gotten 3 of them for the same price at another store.
ikr, like thats just insane. Same with the ice balls, just go to walmart or the gas station and get a bag of ice for 3 dollars, like 30 dollars is insane for 8 pieces of ice.
Most 1 liter maple syrups will cost almost $20 at a regular grocery store, so you'll get 2 for that price, unless you get something smaller. But maple syrup should not even be considered a health food, it's just a natural sweetener. The best deal you can get is getting 1 liter of maple syrup at Costco for $10-$13.
Not only are these influencers out of touch, they're being scammed. No matter how healthy or organically grown the food is at Erewhon, the margin of nutritional value between it and what you can get at a normal grocery store probably isn't that wide. Those people aren't paying exorbitant amounts of money just for the food, they're also paying for the presentation.
exactly. like you can get that kind of organic food from like... whole foods. for a small fraction of the price they're paying at erewhon. it's genuinely confounding like why do you WANT to pay more than necessary? you're not buying a better or more luxurious product. it's the same thing they sell in walmart but in different packaging.
$30 for a bag of ice and $25 for a bottle of water. Erewhon shareholders must be laughing all the way to the bank. Business model where the shtick is that you’re expensive. It’s like a satire of capitalism 👌 PS liking the new hair colour!
Satire capitalism and the store being named after a satirical book has me curious. I wish they were donating all the money to build homeless shelters though... that would be real satire.
This is a big chunk of the luxury industry. This is luxury groceries, doesn't necessarily mean irs better. It's the image that is sold, not always quality.
I saw the goop store in person in Brentwood/ LA (it’s basically Beverly Hills but more trees) and the cringe grrrrr. I basically walked by it and I was like who tf names their store goop that j sounds gross.
It is so disgusting to think about how with all of the various financial crises going on that people could seriously take pride and going to a grocery store solely because it is expensive and it makes them feel “fancy”. Truly dystopian times.
@@PHBRNTGGR2 the thing is if these items weren't considered a luxury then people wouldn't really be interested right? she explains this in her video. influencers need to seem better to influence.

I love how this is the Great Depression all over again. Like if you look the 1920s was exactly like this. The flappers everyone remembers were the rich, affluent influencers, they weren't normal lay people like us.

I remember a TV host telling the world-famous soccer player Zlatan that rich people don't shop at IKEA, and Zlatan replied: “No, but smart people do”. Zlatan has all the money in the world, but he buys things like normal people. I don't think he's the only one. I think the truly rich dont even bother to go grocery shopping, i certainly would have my maids and assistant go on grocery trip for me, heck i wouldn't even keep track of what to buy, that's their job not mine! But even then im sure they would nitpick about the cost. If they buy 25 dollar water they are just asking to get fired. GIRL THANK YOU FOR TALKING ABOUT WEALTH DISPARITY AND FOOD INSECURITY!!!! It has BEEN a problem but the past few years have brought this next level. Things feel so dystopian right now. So many out of touch people don't realize HOW BAD it is right now. Or if they do realize, they don't care and that's worse.
Here in Puerto Rico this situation is even worse. Being a colony of the US, not only do we import most of our food only to get the leftovers when it comes to healthy food, but we’re ONLY allowed to trade with the US. No other country. Because of this the cost of food, especially healthy options, tends to be higher in Puerto Rico due to transportation costs and import tariffs. And so as prices rise in the US, they rise here. Man I literally eat Wendys every single day after I come home from school😭
I worked at Whole Foods for a long time. I could go on a very very long rant on what an absolute scam "healthy" foods are. These people are essentially wasting their money and it's comedic for me to watch. Buy what you can afford. As a nurse, just watch out for saturated fats, sodium and added sugars. Get as many veggies in as you can. What they're selling at Erewhon is a joke.

Everything was already getting out of hand with the prices of housing. Once I started living in another state/culture.... I realized Southern California, is like living on an island. A bubble. It's a distopian nightmare. A lot of the people are brainwashed to think its the best place to live in but.... With the way the economy is in hell, the homelessness rates, the fakery.... Southern California isn't reality. Not to mention the politics and the squatters rights.

I used to work for really wealthy people. They were worth millions, but not like Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos sort of rich. Their money came from businesses their families built for generations (most were real estate, some were stocks & bonds sales, lumber, boat sales, one of them had a local franchise of pharmacies). They were unassuming and you wouldn't have known they were loaded because they never showed off, treated others kindly, and were conscientious with spending. Meanwhile, the wives of family friends I had that weren't rich spent their husbands' O-1-O-2 salaries on Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, and other designer stuff just to flex. Next thing we'll hear, they resent each other and they're either cheating or on the brink of a divorce because of money problems. Made me think actually rich people rarely showed off, while the ones who brag about riches are probably in debt.
I’m lucky enough to live with parents that knew this inflation crisis would happen 20 years ago and saved up so much and worked and sacrificed so much for us to be able to afford basic human necessities. Los Angeles is surrounded by farms, and some are organic. Go to Underwood farms, it's only 40 min to an hour drive. Pick your own, cook your own. Fresher, healthier, and cheaper. Plus, it's fun.
I think the main problem is we as a society/human beings need to stop engaging with their content. That’s how they get paid. They spent 500 in erewhon they gonna make it back and more with that post. The reason why you see more of these vanity and bragging posts is because it’s what people are watching. Plenty influencers post about fixing world hunger how to save money how to eat healthier but compare how many people watch their content to how many people watch these influencers brag. These influencers are not dumb at least not all. They know this is what’s going to get them the most money. Not posting about world peace or how to help the unfortunate.
Some of it is rage bait, they know people will comment and give them engagement by sharing it and making angry comments. The angry people who engage with the content are actually making the problem worse. They don't care that you're insulting them because they made money from your comment and view.
Please lmk when it will because it hasn’t stopped in the past decade, give me an accurate prediction on how this would happen or get out ❤😂 bc I can’t deal w this dystopia anymore
I wonder what a typical Erewhon employee salary looks like. Somehow I doubt their salaries are that great. The people working there most likely can't afford to shop at that store themselves. Capitalism working as intended.
I’m a Kroger employee and I can barely afford to shop at the store I work at. I meal prep for gym goals so I eat very very simple and it’s helping me afford food. Thank god for seasoning 😂
Now you know why these people are constantly in need more money. They don't at all bloody know how to spend money the proper way. Cheap is not bad. Expensive is not good or better anyway. These people are dumb. Wasting money like this is sad, pathetic & disgusting.
wonder how much of the good taste is psychological, like, “i paid so much so it HAS to be good!” also, some of those influencers are definitely trying to fake it til they make it, and going into so much debt 😭
What happened to praising places for being cheap? How are people buying MORE things from a place just because it’s MORE expensive? How are we in an era that simultaneously praises TEMU for being super duper cheap while also hyping up Erewhon for the EXACT opposite?!?!

Some of us still live with our parents because of how much we can't afford for a simple place, yet these influencers get to easily buy 1,000$ in Erewhon? How can someone be so out of touch? Look we're not saying to not do what you want but for the love of fuck, be fucking mindful, be compassionate, and know that it's not a fucking Flex
I honestly don't blame the influencers. They make money off of flexing. It's the idiots who follow them that I blame. The influencers would have no power if they didn't have an audience.

Neither am I from the US. Food prices all over the world has risen to a disgusting level. It's not luxury types also. Just normal stores. Just basic food that has gone up all after Covid. SAD BUT THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT CONTINUE UNTIL WE ALL PASS AWAY.
Dont be blind folks. There is a hidden message behind this. They are trying to normalize the prices as the normal supermarket. A monthly budget of $ 1200 for groceries for a family of four? Way too much. This is not normal. This is what we used to spend in a year.

I would honestly bet money that most of these influencers are paycheck to paycheck, spending more money to get more views every month, anything extra goes right back into content. Increasing money, but no increasing wealth, and when their socials finally phase out, they’ll have nothing to show for it. Being an influencer is such a coveted career but it seems to me like a career that would destroy you from the inside out and not something I would ever pursue.
@@itskindofemilyGMOs provide amazing health and environmental benefits to us. Literally every domesticated crop and animal (rice, wheat, chickens, cows) are technically considered GMOs because domestication essentially artificially changes their genes. Modern GMOs are bred to have increased vitamin content, decreased need for pesticides, decreased water usage, decreased need for space, and increase in size. All of which are essential for the health of our earth’s large population to feed us and prevent the destruction of our environment. Not every single GMO is produced with good intentions, I understand this, but overall GMOs provide immense benefits for human and environmental health.

I live in OH and this is the first time I've heard of this store. Like, sure rich people, spend your money how you want. This store has stupid prices because it knows those rich people will pay those prices just because they can. But flaunting this is so gross. The margin between these rich people and even the "middle class" just gets wider and wider.
I’m glad I’ve learned to budget, and buckle down on my expenses. I have my four walls covered, my mortgage, car, utilities, and food. Yes it limits me in going out , shopping and travel, unless I set aside money for that. But I’m able to save for an “emergency fund” and buy what’s on sale or generic in the grocery stores. I’m trying live below my means, and don’t care to follow a person that may have debt or higher income due to their social media persona.
I think you are my new favorite TH-cam channel. I love that you are calling out the ridiculousness of this, and all the other in-your-face spend pushing across social media and beyond.
Erewhon is a success(?) story in marketing. Use all the right buzz words, have a pleasing aesthetic, and garner support from rich pretty people. Trader Joe's appeal is largely similar (they have organic and "non-organic" produce, aesthetically appealing packaging/store layout with a LIMITED number of options, and a generally younger skewing crowd), yet TJ works directly with manufacturers producers for their branded products so they can sell it at lower prices...which helps with retaining customers. Erewhon's prices come from the image Erewhon built (amusement park), not from the cost and quality of their actual products. Ironically, both well known despite not seeming to invest much in advertising (or parking space in TJ's case). Their customers do it for them.
I used to live in the Los Angeles area. At one point I was so broke I was skipping meals and eating out of the break room trash at work in secret. This actually makes me angry.
I paid $10 for 5 lbs of Michigan blueberries (in WI). Was actually cheaper than going to a local farm to pick my own. I never wish bad on people, but I might make an exception in this case. You could make a sundae for $13 and donate $987 to a local food pantry. And shame on celebrities promoting this crap.
I lived in LA for a while. It's a complete and utter dump of a city. I left the very moment I could and went to the midwest to live in a safe, walkable city. I'm happier, the people here are happier, and the cost of living is doable. I can justify paying a little more for goods at a small town grocery co-op that has food from farms literally down the street but stores like Erewhon have little to no place in a community of normal people.
I agree, I lived there too. I hate having people stop and asked if I was a musician or an actress, just to try to network with me. I would tell them I’m not able to help their status I work in the service industry and no desire to work in entertainment. 😂😂😂😂
I have to admit, my family are well-off. But When i told them about how apparently influencers would spend $1,000 on Nachos and $25 for bottled water. They just laughed. We all found it so hilarious, because we couldn’t comprehend how people will splurge on a water bottle that almost equals to the price of a full dinner meal. Ain’t no way we are spending high price on Ice either. Freeze cubes at home, done. Nothing wrong with a simple bag or Doritos for the party occasions from time to time. Just don’t over-eat you know?

You're right. It's false wealth. I have a few wealthy family members. They still shop at Walmart and Costco. You won't catch them showing off on tiktok.
It’s so funny when that one Erewhon shopper says sth along the lines of “the produce is so expensive, but it’s also sooooo good, the best!!! Give me the 14 $ sliced cucumber!!” - I’m sure she actually thinks that. If something is expensive, it will most likely trick your brain into believing that what you’re buying MUST be better than the cheaper alternatives, even if it’s not.
This is why we shouldn’t tell the white rich influencers about H Mart. They’re building one in my city rn and I’m so excited for it to open! I went to a concert in LA recently and like 75% of what we ate was from H Mart and it was delicious 😂
Aren't there some items you can find elsewhere, that aren't exclusive to Erewhon, that are just overpriced like on purpose? It's just like buying "luxury" bags, this type of thing makes normal people feel "rich" 🥴
Needed to say... Just discovered your videos and I am LIVING. Your knowledge and insight to societal discourse is absolutely refreshing and is seriously something more people need to consume. Keep doing what you are doing. 🧡
Half of the people who shop there wouldn't if social media didn't exist. They literally shop there for the purpose of bragging to us that they were there😂 which is a bit pathetic
20 years ago I lived in L A. Once in a while I shopped at Erewhon. It was similar to shopping at Whole Foods. I NEVER spent these amounts. Price gouging and corporate greed are driving up prices everywhere. But Erewhon is... ridiculous doesn't begin to describe it.
I wish your content would reach more people…something in our world NEEDS to change! The road we are traveling is crumbling from the underside and most people are unaware of just how unstable it is🥴 Everyone should grow “something” to eat, be thrifty when they do purchase, and look for quality products. Eh i disagree with you here. There’s been several studies showing Foods that are sprayed with synthetic chemicals, pumped with hormones and other harmful ingredients are objectionably worse for you than food that is plucked from the ground and hasn’t been modified. They’re known to cause cancers and other chronic illnesses. Many of these “studies” debunking this were sponsored by big food corporations looking to deceive the public to make $$$ and keep ppl buying. GMOs are also bad for the environment.
but processed food is generally not bad tho! milk, yogurt, cheese, even a smoothie is technically processed. ultra processed food like chips, fries etc are probably what people mean when they say processed.
That’s what I was thinking too. Loads of foods we eat are GMO to make them better for us or easier to grow, not go off, etc. There’s nothing great about organic either, they’re not more nutritious and can still use pesticides.
I felt guilty buying myself a $15 cocktail (including tip) today that WAS way overpriced but damn I feel a little better knowing at least I'm not buying $25 water
You mentioned food deserts, so here's an interesting experiment they did: They opened up a very affordable grocery store in a food desert and made sure to fill it with fresh vegetables, fruits, etc. and had it run by locals. It was in an accessible location, they heavily advertised it, had a grand opening, invited people, everyone in that area knew it was there and that it was affordable. They left it for ten years, making sure it was supplied daily. Ten years later they came back and found that only about 2% of the population of that area used that grocery store. Just something interesting.

Okay Ashley, I NEVER comment but whew I LOVE this clip! I have a MOUTHFUL, so be aware. TLDR at the end! ❤ I am part of the symbiotic joint-income (childless) village movement and even though that was a mouthful (lol), this is exactly the reason I joined the community. As an undergrad student, I joint this community and lived in a house-share with 5 other adults whom did not have children, hence me joining the childless faction of the movement (there are factions that cater to adults with dependents). As I've graduated and entered the working force, I've lived in apartments where the village occupies one whole floor of the apartment block to where now, I am in a house with 3 storeys and 11 individuals. We pool our income for this exact reason. The movement was started due to the pervasive nature of Neo-Colonial Capitalism. The current wave (of Capitalism) we're in is one of a colonial nature whereby conglomerates and individual Billionaires alike find no qualms with invading land & decimating native homelands for monetary gain (and also sadistic Capitalistic 'flexing' or exerting dominance.) To give you an example: Amazon (YES, AMAZON) opened an office here in my country, South Africa. Firstly, they built it on sacred land - driving many indigenous away from their home (human & animal alike) and secondly, they didn't even do this on some global expansion shit, Amazon doesn't EVEN SHIP TO SOUTH AFRICA!? See? Neo-Colonial Capitalism. The symbiotic village was started to combat exactly the effects of it. Amazon's new Headquarters drove up property price in the area, therefore gentrification ushered itself in and so on and so forth. We need to face it yall, one month's salary aint worth shit in this wave of Capitalism. Shit, even in my current village we about to be without lights if literally one person loses their main income. THAT's how deep it is right now. Thanks for the video girl, much luv.❤ TLDR: The proliferation of Billionaires & the inability for countries to govern their own finances (without the reliance on another or on an international chamber of sorts; UN, BRICS, African Bank etc) aids Neo-Colonial Capitalism and the destruction that comes with it. There are communites / communes that pool incomes to combat the destruction that Neo-Colonial Capitalism brings. Sending to love to everyone counting their coins twice nowadays. ❤

1:31 23.99 for a box of organic strawberries. Absolutely insane. I made unhappy noises.
the video was really educationg for me. you don't value access to green food until you are reminded how many people do not have it. Thank you, Ashley!
same here! it was shocking that people spend so much for a bag of groceries in normal shops!
girl the way you present information makes it so accessible to me, someone who doesn’t understand the fancy terms that can sometimes come along with class consciousness. your channel is so valuable to me, thanks for everything you do!!!!! :) 💕💕💕
don't forget, some fo those influncers can't afford shopping there. but they can write it off ass business expenses
Lol to be fair, they say that about everything they review 😂 its all life changing and the BEsT1!1!
And yet they still make money and not complain about being broke to other rich people.
Why are people flexing poor financial management?
Unfortunately, those people have others hyping them up, and so they keep making these foolish decisions.
I wish your content would reach more people…something in our world NEEDS to change! The road we are traveling is crumbling from the underside and most people are unaware of just how unstable it is🥴 Everyone should grow “something” to eat, be thrifty when they do purchase, and look for quality products. We’ve forgotten how to be good stewards of planet and our own bodies😢
this is just unreal wow...great vid tho!!
THANK YOU for pointing out roasanna, I remember commenting on that video and saying how that turned me off from her because she was basically promoting this unnecessary and unrealistic lifestyle
If I follow or watch any influencers who do anything “erewhon “ I will immediately stop watching . This makes me think of “the emperor’s new clothes. Anyone who pays these type of prices (especially for WATER AND ICE) is DEEPLY STUPID-and should not be navigating the world unsupervised.
So they can't support local farms and get it fresh instead of wasting their money on some random trendy grocery store 😂
12:38 i think ashley's conflating gmos with processed food. additionally, gmos = bad has been widely debunked and has no hard science to back it up. im guessing ashley just misspoke and actually meant processed food? love the vid still! those hauls were w i l d.
@@seaofcereal696yeah, it’s like saying you don’t want chemicals in your food
That’s what I was thinking too. Loads of foods we eat are GMO to make them better for us or easier to grow, not go off, etc. There’s nothing great about organic either, they’re not more nutritious and can still use pesticides.
I was going to comment this. GMOs are not bad for health, but ultraprocessed foods are. Still great video as always!
I felt guilty buying myself a $15 cocktail (including tip) today that WAS way overpriced but damn I feel a little better knowing at least I'm not buying $25 water
6:12 good for you, you don’t have to. Please continue to being you and not sucked up by this!
I drove by Erewhon once when I was in LA for one of my richer friends' weddings and I could feel it trying to make my money disappear.
You mentioned food deserts, so here's an interesting experiment they did:
They opened up a very affordable grocery store in a food desert and made sure to fill it with fresh vegetables, fruits, etc. and had it run by locals.
This happened in my city as well. Two activist types did this and it didnt even last a year.
No joke I wanna puke after hearing about the animal gut smoothie
That’s a nasty smoothie waiting for a lawsuit
This is the first time I've ever seen your channel, and I'm so glad I found it!! I listened to the whole video and found myself excited to subscribe! I sincerely figured you would have had hundreds of thousands of subscribers! Your video was so well put together and so insanely entertaining and educating. Haha this comment sounds crazy, but sincerely, I see you reaching the a massive following! So happy I can join in watching your channel grow!! Keep it up girly! 💜
i was in LA for the first time this summer and went to erewhon a few times just to marvel at it. i did buy a $3 bottle of water (a good price for the glass bottle imo) and some of my friends got smoothies just for the novelty but i couldn't bring myself to pay $20 for a smoothie lol
It's giving let them eat cake
Okay Ashley, I NEVER comment but whew I LOVE this clip! I have a MOUTHFUL, so be aware. TLDR at the end! ❤
I am part of the symbiotic joint-income (childless) village movement and even though that was a mouthful (lol), this is exactly the reason I joined the community. The current wave (of Capitalism) we're in is one of a colonial nature whereby conglomerates and individual Billionaires alike find no qualms with invading land & decimating native homelands for monetary gain (and also sadistic Capitalistic 'flexing' or exerting dominance.)
To give you an example: Amazon (YES, AMAZON) opened an office here in my country, South Africa.
Thanks for the video girl, much luv.❤
TLDR: The proliferation of Billionaires & the inability for countries to govern their own finances (without the reliance on another or on an international chamber of sorts; UN, BRICS, African Bank etc) aids Neo-Colonial Capitalism and the destruction that comes with it. There are communites / communes that pool incomes to combat the destruction that Neo-Colonial Capitalism brings. Sending to love to everyone counting their coins twice nowadays. ❤
I hope non-influencers realise that these people get their investment back in views/payout from various social media sites. True rich people would never shop at a place like this and neither would the influencers - I highly doubt Sabrina Carpenter wastes her money on on stupidly inflated groceries. They're targeting the young and impressionable.
Spending like this is just DELUSIONAL. 😭
The hilarious thing? They wouldn’t be able to afford that grocery store without the TikTok views to support it. If people didn’t watch, those people would have to go to Safeway with the rest of us. 💁🏼♂️
And they can still afford it and get rich off it.
This is genuinely infuriating. I can't even afford a bag of chips as a little treat.
