I had the pleasure of meeting Jerry last year and learned a bunch. What I like about Jerry and Travis is they are just full of information and willing to share. Great people.
That's amazing, I've been a knife maker for over thirty years now and have built several 2X72 grinders which are the traditional knife grinder. The biggest problem to master I've found with these grinders is learning to grind on the opposite side of where your looking and I'm sure knife makers know what I'm talking about. Another problem older knife makers have and I'm in my mid 60's now is light, trying to illuminate the back side of something you really cant see anyway is a problem, this grinder solves both of those issues! I just wish something like this was available thirty years ago,..well done sir!
I had the opportunity to use Travis' grinder in the machine shop I worked in when going to college. It still is by far the best grinder I've ever used.
So awesome to see you stumble across my video Mike, glad to have you here. I've watched pretty much every video you've made, and applaud you for taking the time to help so many people learn how to make knives properly. I've applied much of what you've taught myself and it really helped. Thank you.
Jim Skelton Thank you Jim! I'm a long time fan of your channel. Even before I became a maker. It's awesome to see you transition to the dirty side of knives and even cooler to hear that my videos were a help in any way!
It is cool you are into all the tactical edge weapons I looked cool stuff. I am a damascus and blade forger I have to pound hot stuff, I sent you my Website years ago when I first seen you demo some folders. kustommadeknives.com Stebbins Knives I make hunting knives and sheaths with exotic furniture. I have a mess of watches NBC stuff under 30 all autos eta''s and vachoue's if anyone is looking for something Renatos Invicta SWI to many to wear. Keep on Keeping on & and grinding
Great narration Jim. Love the new techniques that the mini TW set up lets you do , like attacking the plunge in a circular motion, and advancing grits on all 4 grinds with absolutely no set up.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing this! It HAS changed my life! I will buy one of these little grinders one day but I couldn't wait to try this grinding technique. It has helped me SO SO much! It is genius. I am now confident I shouldn't have any more scrapped blades instead of around 1.5 per knife on average in the past:) I made a "micro adjustable" measuring tool rest design to be able to do this precisely on my KMG and would love to send you the CAD drawings to give Travis some ideas (i'm sure he already has something in the works, that is one smart dude.) Just want to give back to the community I have learned so much from.
Thank you for sharing this innovation from Travis Wuertz. My feeling is free time equals more creativity, this is what sets one craftsman apart from another. IMO
Wow what a ingenious creation! Only thing is that the grinded material (sparks) goes everywhere instead of down into a bucket, so the mess could become an issue
This grinder and granite base seems like an excellent choice for a beginner like me. It appears as though the learning curve is substantially less than starting on a conventional 2"x72" single speed belt grinder. Did TW ever release the 1" grinder?
Oh Yes Sir. You are the MAGIC I've been Looking for. Fantastic will be checking out your every upload! Thanx and Bless your path with Grace and Happiness alllyour days
I want one of Travis' new grinders! I have two of Travis's TW-90 and feel they are the best grinders on the market. Travis is a great person to deal with and he really knows how to design grinders. I don't think his new grinder will help me grind faster than I already do, but it will help me do a better job on double edged knives like a dagger. It is very controllable and precise. Travis, I want one. Please put them into production!
Okay. I had to watch it again because my eyes couldn't believe what I was seeing the first time. Getting to watch your hollow grinds form? Put me down for a 1" mini grinder package. Looks awesome!
Loved this video! I'm a sucker for custom made tools and this right here is la creme de la cream. Not only is saving time important, but getting accurate and reproducible results is equally important IMO. Good stuff...Thanks Jim!
Ok, just stumbled across this today (Apr 12, 2019), and am THOROUGHLY impressed ! So- where are we NOW in the process of production to commercial delivery ? I help folks design their "Next Great Idea" and am thoroughly fascinated ! ALSO, my wife has passed on the notion of addiing some new "works" to my own shop, and I'd LOVE to add this to my _OWN_ WFP (Work Flow Process) ! Thanks and ALL the BEST - C.
At 18:00: perhaps after prototype, fabricating a skirted knob around the bolt you're having to stop this amazing tool at to adjust? Thanks, can't wait to own one! - live for being instructed! Aka: Jerry's flip jig! (I get it! )...I LOVE this video! Thank you!
Excellent..!! Maybe you've got a bit of steel grit buildup on granite slab that could have thrown you out squif..!! Love your presentation..!! Your Machine a winner, for sure.. !!
Oh man that little grinder... Travis really makes quality products. Get your hands on what ever he sells. Its a bit pricey but you will not be disappointed, they are everything he says they will be and more. Did he have a time line on when that grinder was coming out? it sure would make production runs even easier.
Impressive, most impressive. I skipped some of the grinding in the middle, etc... Did they mention how much this would be and when it would be made available? I really hope this project becomes available soon to the small business blade maker at a reasonable cost.
Really nice , and expensive to build . And you need a full machine shop to do it . OK it's 2018 but I don't know where to get this (plans or the finished) grinder ?
The center line staying centered being preset is similar to grinding sheer angles on punches. You can grind any over all length and the center line stays center.
I love the mini grinder and the rubber backed belt platen. I’d want the grinder nearer chest hight to protect my back and I’d wear a full face visor with respirator.
KingKiavash I'm with ya bud, I can and will build this. But, i am definitely going to make at least two improvements, I'm going to use Aluminium and not that dodgy American aluminum, also it will be a 25mm wide belt, using an inch is just daft (lol)
Had to come watch this again; it's very cool. Jim, do you know if Travis has figured out a way to grind folder blades with this yet, or rather how to securely hold on to them while grinding? I know most guys use vise clamps and/or a jig to hold them since they have almost no tang to hold on to, but obviously those two options wouldn't work with this granite grinding set up. I don't make folders at the moment, although it got me curious as I'm sure that would also be a good part of the market for these grinders. I was thinking you could leave the bar stock longer until you grind the bevels, but that would either end up wasting steel or making the milling/drilling step possibly more complicated for guys that already have their own processes down. Just wondering :)
You could try grinding two folders on opposite sides of the same bar using the technique shown then cut out the tangs afterwords to help give you a larger reference surface when grinding while wasting less steel then would otherwise be the case.
John it works like every other grinder. If you don't know what you're doing... on any grinder... you can burn up the HT. But anyone buying a grinder should know better. This grinder generates no more heat or friction than the big one next to it there.
If anyone can tell me where to get that type of motor at or if Travis has gotten this grinder to market yet cause I've been waiting almost 2 years now just to see if he'd sale them and haven't been able to find anything about it
I guess that Travis will put a knob on that height adjuster, and if you use a Trig calculator to calculate your bevel height, you'd just use a caliper or height gauge to dial in the height (with the belt on probably).
jimmyhendrix87 Good ideas. Especially measuring with the belt on. It can be tricky with grinding hollows sometimes because the radius can change quite a bit from belt to belt, such as if you were using a thin 220 j weight belt and then switched over to a thicker gator belt next, which can cause your bevels to have multiple facets as opposed to one smooth hollow. I personally don't hollow grind any of my blades but I have seen a couple makers experience this issue before they found the right sequence of belt types and grits that works for their process. Anyway, that was just something that came to my mind while watching this.
It's a great idea, but the reverse drive is throwing sparks and metal directly in to you not to mention if it somehow gets away from you and throws a hollow ground blade into your belly..
This seems to work nicely for dagger type knives, but if you want to make, say for example, a tappered from tip to bolster kitchen knife it wont be possible, or I fail to see how can it be done...
Ok I am in but what is the motor AC/or DC Or Air What size belt does it use 1x72 or 1x30 ??? No matter what i want one as soon as they are available . maybe Jim can give us more information.

can someone tell me how come a lot of the parts used to make the grinders can't be found at a reasonable price on google anymore? 4-5 years ago anyone could find the parts and build one not exactly this type but close and it wouldn't cost hardly anything at most $250 but since everyone started building them for TH-cam and craftsmen made the cheap 2×42 and then stopped making them and pulled them from the shelf changed the name plate and restocked them at more than double the original price you can't even find the pulleys unless you get them from another knife maker who's making their own so can someone please tell me what's going on has the U.S.A became a policed state now for real? SORRY I had to rant Travis that's an awsome grinder you are the man also go back on forged in fire champions series
Who-Man LifeA'Tackett it's a specialized market, that means fewer customers than say machines/parts used in every machine shop. Because of low production qualities, prices are high. If every machine shop or mechanics garage needed a grinder, they'd be $2000 instead of $5000+
Jim Skelton hey has Travis put his grinder on the mark it yet and I'm sorry about the long name I'm logged in under a new product/business name and didn't realize it plus I'm having a lot of trouble with my laptop
hey Jim im probably going to stick my foot in my mouth but I'm not familiar with your name but your voice I'm almost 100% sure I've heard it are you on a TV show or something because you've got a voice that should be I don't mean any disrespect just the opposite actually but with my luck your most likely famous as hell and I'm looking like an idiot now but hey I'm only Who-man

mount a mirror
I had the opportunity to use Travis' grinder in the machine shop I worked in when going to college. It still is by far the best grinder I've ever used.
Dam that was FN awsome thank you Jim
That’s pretty freaking cool! An I do remember Travis! I was cheerin for him in Forged in Fire! Glad he won!
That is the coolest little grinder I've ever seen! I need to get behind one of these!!
So awesome to see you stumble across my video Mike, glad to have you here. I've watched pretty much every video you've made, and applaud you for taking the time to help so many people learn how to make knives properly. I've applied much of what you've taught myself and it really helped. Thank you.

I would love to see that cad or even just a video demonstration I could use some improvement
Thank you for sharing this innovation from Travis Wuertz. My feeling is free time equals more creativity, this is what sets one craftsman apart from another. IMO
Looking forward to this grinder. I just actually received my TW 90 yesterday and haven't gotten to play with it yet. Thanks for the video!
Wow what a ingenious creation! Only thing is that the grinded material (sparks) goes everywhere instead of down into a bucket, so the mess could become an issue
Jep mess
But!!
Youlle finish youre knife in a small amount of time
And if you do a batch of 5 or 10 knifes
Clean up is still 1 time...
This grinder and granite base seems like an excellent choice for a beginner like me. It appears as though the learning curve is substantially less than starting on a conventional 2"x72" single speed belt grinder. Did TW ever release the 1" grinder?
That grinder is awesome, but F me it was loud! Tinnitus anyone! Ear protection is a must for any shop...but definitely for this!
Oh Yes Sir. You are the MAGIC I've been Looking for. Fantastic will be checking out your every upload!
Thanx and Bless your path with Grace and Happiness alllyour days
great info on the belts

Takes time learning to adjust this grinder, but looks amazing for this prototype.
I can’t wait to get one.
May one of the best grinding solutions of all times...
Forged In Fire champion and a great inventor
Forged in fire. Yeah, that's the show that got me looking into this.
I need that mini grinder in my life!
Loved this video! I'm a sucker for custom made tools and this right here is la creme de la cream. Not only is saving time important, but getting accurate and reproducible results is equally important IMO. Good stuff...Thanks Jim!
This is exciting!
Very interesting, Thanks for bringing it to us, Jim.
The time it took for that mirror flat grind was cray cray.
Great video Jim!
Small grinder is very cool!!!!
I so need that little grinder. thanks
The machining on that grinder is so fucking precise.
Pretty slick, I could see this helping me transition from a designer to a maker.
@47:43 when you talk about Travis dumping, look at his face and watch his mood sour. This is gold.
Ok, just stumbled across this today (Apr 12, 2019), and am THOROUGHLY impressed ! So- where are we NOW in the process of production to commercial delivery ? Soooooo....... any more on this grinder? Really interested in an update, even if it just indicates it's a non-starter.Thanks!
No

I really hope this project becomes available soon to the small business blade maker at a reasonable cost.
Roy Fernbach Does anyone know if this machine is available, yet?
Steven Watkins has anybody heard if this machines available yet how much
Mark Pedersen he has a website, you can buy his grinders there. Just type his name up and you'll find it
Woah, It's Travis from forged & fire! Was rooting for him during the show
Well done
Love to watch a knife being made. Even though I don't make them myself.
I hope Jerry will make that tool rest and jig available. I'd love to have that and the mini grinder.
Travis will be manufacturing them for him and they will be available in a couple months.
Really nice , and expensive to build . And you need a full machine shop to do it . OK it's 2018 but I don't know where to get this (plans or the finished) grinder ?
thats a cool looking little knife
The center line staying centered being preset is similar to grinding sheer angles on punches. You can grind any over all length and the center line stays center.
Is this available in the market already? Cool grinder for a hobbyist.
That is just slick
did that on a little 6 inch bench grinder before, works real well
This guy created a badass grinder and all I manage to accomplish was changing the belt on my wife's car.
jrh0369 at least you’ve got a wife and a car. 😞
These are awesome we're can we get 1?
Jim you have a flawless voice. Always a pleasure hearing you narrate a video.
I definitely NEED one of these like ASAP!🙌🤘✊👍💪🏻🇺🇸
I love the mini grinder and the rubber backed belt platen. I’d want the grinder nearer chest hight to protect my back and I’d wear a full face visor with respirator.
want this so badly.
Dam I want this machine !
I don't make Knives, but this did change my life
Could I get plans to built that great grinder
Jean-Paul Larche Since Travis makes his living by designing, building and selling grinders.... I’m thinking the answer is “no”. LOL
Wow, that's amazing. Great innovation by Travis, hat off to him. If its not too expensive (I know grinders prices) I'd definitely get one.
If he somehow manages to keep it under 500 it'll definitely be worth the buy
James Baynes LMAO! I hope you mean the platen and jig. Because you're not going to come close to this grinder for $500.
I'll build you one for $200.
KingKiavash I'm with ya bud, I can and will build this. But, i am definitely going to make at least two improvements, I'm going to use Aluminium and not that dodgy American aluminum, also it will be a 25mm wide belt, using an inch is just daft (lol)
True but for the size any higher in price and you're breaking into the 2x72 entry level stuff.
Had to come watch this again; it's very cool. Jim, do you know if Travis has figured out a way to grind folder blades with this yet, or rather how to securely hold on to them while grinding? How much would it be price wise? It also needs a light attachment would be good.
Did that new grinder ever come to market?
Doesnt the blade overheat and loose its hardness?
John it works like every other grinder. If you don't know what you're doing... on any grinder... you can burn up the HT. But anyone buying a grinder should know better. This grinder generates no more heat or friction than the big one next to it there.
When you make neat grinders like this, you deserve to be the Forged in Fire Champion of Champions.
Are these grinders even available?
is it available now?
Do you offer these yet? April 2020
That's sweet! When will it be available for sale?
What is the name of this setup? And what does it cost?
That is an awesome grinder!
I have a KMG which is an excellent grinder but i would like to have the one of your small grinders. What is the price?
Man, I would kill to have just 1 of those 2x72s, let alone 4 of them in my shop.
are these available for purchase
Is this available for sale now?
do you know if travis is looking to put the small grinder into production?
taylor wilkinson Yes, I mentioned that a lot in the video.
Jim Skelton yeah, I commented about half way through, and was only half paying attention, got finals to study before.
I want that one and Stan's. can I get a link please?
Isaiah Gilchrist-Myers www.traviswuertz.com/
Well, I may be missing something but there are 6 items for sale in his web site. No tiny grinder in sight.
How can I get this grinder?
He never made them, unfortunately
will the grinder eventually grind into the stone making an un even surface?
TonydlP650 it doesn't touch the granite's surface
SWEET...!
I’ve hunted to find one of these for sale n can’t find one
How much for both set ups please , OMG
Build youre own!
Its cheaper...

That's the plan. There will be a marked knob to make the adjustments.
deserves a "Bull Terror" Award for a job well done.
Has Travis started production on this grinder yet?
It's a great idea, but the reverse drive is throwing sparks and metal directly in to you not to mention if it somehow gets away from you and throws a hollow ground blade into your belly..
Getting Loose at the Goose--go Trav!
I imagine it blows through belts really quickly. What us the cost of this little gem?
Can this be used to just sharpen knives to a razor edge? I'm not a knife maker but sharpen knives as a business.
Take my money now!!!
It's a brushless R/C car motor and he was using a 1X30 belt
Jim, do you have one of these?
jim, where can i get one?
I would give it a "BIG WOW" but looking at all that expert maching I cringe at what the price may be.
I'm completely unknowlageable in the skill of knife making however I can see that Travis' grinder really simplifies things. IMO it eventually raises the bar for some in the trade if they want to stay competitive. What I'm curious about is what brand are the grinders that Jerry is using, the 2x72 s? They look like a quality machine I would have interest in.
Travis Wuertz,
congratulation for your Viking Sword.
Sweet
can someone tell me how come a lot of the parts used to make the grinders can't be found at a reasonable price on google anymore? 4-5 years ago anyone could find the parts and build one not exactly this type but close and it wouldn't cost hardly anything at most $250 but since everyone started building them for TH-cam and craftsmen made the cheap 2×42 and then stopped making them and pulled them from the shelf changed the name plate and restocked them at more than double the original price you can't even find the pulleys unless you get them from another knife maker who's making their own so can someone please tell me what's going on has the U.S.A became a policed state now for real? Who-Man LifeA'Tackett No worries. Last I heard, Travis plans to have a couple at the BLADE show
hey Jim im probably going to stick my foot in my mouth but I'm not familiar with your name but your voice I'm almost 100% sure I've heard it are you on a TV show or something because you've got a voice that should be I don't mean any disrespect just the opposite actually but with my luck your most likely famous as hell and I'm looking like an idiot now but hey I'm only

Hello: Is there a waiting list to get on for the small grinder? Thanks!
