Some history on the piles of slate they are scrap piles, roughly every 9 ton of slate mined only 1 ton was good, rust stains are impurities of naturally occurring iron pyrites. As well as being unsightly, this will also lead to premature ageing and failure of slate roofing. If you look at the slate scrap piles most of the slate will have a rust looking mark on it.
Anyone else visiting look out for the secret slate mural at 1:19 in the video on your right side, look to the top as you walk up to spot him, and you see a slate worker in the wall made from slate. He is about 15 foot high and about 150 yards up the slate pile from the path your on.
