My great great grandparents were Samuel and Alison Gillespie and it was their farm called Sunnybrae. They actually came from Borgue in Scotland and came to Brisbne in 1862.
Thank you once again for a walk down memory lane. I recall my mum saying we couldn’t go to The Oasis as it was for the hauty tauty crowd and we couldn’t afford the fee. Later a family member was married there and I got to see inside. I laughed about the road from Ipswich to Cleveland, I would tell my daughter all roads lead to Ipswich or Cleveland … nice to know I wasn’t lying.
The Australians of Chinese decent have long favored Sunnybank as part of their cultural history. There are many of their homes in this area, and Sunnybank has prospered from their efforts. My friend's great-grandfather was a market gardener who railed his produce to the markets at Central Station. During both WW1 and WW2, in Brisbane, Darwin and many other places, it was the Chinese Market gardeners who grew much of the fruit and vegetable for us, in times of our need.

I teach at Sunnybank. It a fascinating place to move around in and the food is astounding. I remember as a kid going to Mater Prize homes in the area. KMart was once a custard apple farm. And you missed Our Lady of Lourdes school in 1952.
l left Sunnybank High School in 1982. Yes no AC or fans. When l was there l think we had one apple computer for the entire school. We loved the Oasis and our school used the Acacia pool for lessons. This was great Rob. Thanks so much.

McDonald's was next door in the 80s, where the Time Square building is situated. There was a Shell service station where McDonald's is presently siutated.
As someone whom has lived in the Sunnybank area for 30 years,I moved there in 1991 with my family I was 16 years old I found this video interesting and very informative about the local area thank you you walkabout

Oasis Gardens that brings back some memories. I remember swimming training there with the late great swimming coach Bernie Wakefield who trained legends like Susie O'neil and I trained there till the day it closed. The Aciacia Swimming club relocated to the Hibiscus Swim Centre after that. Those gardens truely where beautiful and sadly I miss them to this day but progress what can you do. Fantastic episode Rob keep them coming.
Loved this and seeing early maps of the roads that are still there today. I remember many farms there when we moved up to Beenleigh from Victoria. Enjoyed pics of you in your first plays... Oh and the last house just at the end cut off very quickly.......yes I had a giggle. Good history of Sunnybank, well done once again.

My parents moved to Robertson in the mid 70's. I remember my dad telling me it was a custard apple farm owned by the Robertson's. Our neighbour was called Robertson she had the same birthday as I and I remember going to wish her a birthday every year. I wonder if she was one of the children from original farm.
With the Gillespie family origins, there is a Lanarkshire in Scotland, maybe that's where the mix up is? Lanarkshire is one of the areas the surname originated too, so Occam's razor would lead me to that being the answer!
Yeah, would love Highgate hill too! I lived there around 2002 and loved it. I caught that little chubby ferry from Dutton Pk to UQ every day (that was before the Green bridge).
Oh. Great video taught me a thing or two. Not that long ago, there was a massive rain event over Brisbane and a friend took a picture of the radar to prove how wide that stationary slab of rain was all over Brisbane. I noticed in the picture, one circle of completely clear skies with not a drop of rain, and that circle was exactly right over Sunnybank! 😊 My friend said "Oh! Thats why they call it Sunnybank! Now I see other reasons how it was named Sunnybank. 😊
The classrooms where substandard. l remember they had bare untreated wooden floors, wooden desks with the old ink well hole in them and a blackboard. No fans, no AC... and in winter they were desperately cold. l dont know how kids today would have survived back then. Oh yeah we also had no ice to put on a little bump either.

I was in the first year at Macgregor Primary School 1972 and lived in Darlington Street. We had a tobacco farm behind us. Later we moved to Robertson. I used to walk home from school past the red hill (now Sunnybank.Plaza?) And the custard apples (that became Macdonalds) later the Sunnybank Pub became a favourite place to go. Great memories from happy and carefree times.

@@walkaboutwithrob Edmond is right in that your current video title 银行 is the money bank and not what you were intending, or perhaps you were? :) In any case, 岸 generically refers to land next to a waterway or water body, 海 is the sea so 海岸 makes the beach. 河岸 is river bank but going down the brae/hillside idea, probably 坡 is more true to term. I think you are slightly incorrect about the Macca's being on the same site Rob. I think you will find it is now sited where a petrol station(can't remember which brand now) and Macca's was on the lot adjacent to where it is now sited.

By the mid 90s, the school had worked very hard to have an excellent ratio of computers to students compared to other state schools.
