Did you know that Pushkin was descendant of black african slave who became Russian noble? His name was Abram Petrovich Gannibal. He was gifted as a small boy slave to Peter the Great who send him to France to study military engineering. Then he served in Peter's army and made it in to general and eventualy got elevated in to noble by Peter. His great-grandson was the poet Alexander Pushkin.
I knew Pushkin was part African but I did not study how. Thanks for the details!

I had the great privilege of the visiting the Catherine Palace since years back. Also I went to the Heritage with a visit to the gold room. I want to return asap and see more. So far four times to Russia. Wonderful country and people.
This is my 5th time to Russia. I just have not left.

Yes, during the Great Patriotic War, museum workers performed a feat, they risked their lives, took out and hid works of art!!! In the audio guide, you can choose the language in which you want to listen, or was there no such option?
Usually you can pick your language but at this place on this day it was not a choice.

The curator of the Hermitage saved a lot of the art during the revolution, by giving the tour to the revolutionaries about the history and the heritage of the people. So it was preserved for generations., unlike in France where a lot of history was destroyed or in the museum of Baghdad by the American forces.

I live in Moscow so trip to st. Petersburg is always enjoyable to see many great imperial palaces and parks etc., Catherine park is one of my favorite. Today my wife and daughter will get on cruise from st. Petersburg to Moscow for 7 days. I highly recommend you try some cruises in Russia, i am sure you can really enjoy it.

Oh you should see our next video soon where we walk around the center.
If you run around the city, then one day is enough for you, and if you want to see it, then as a rule foreigners come for 3 days. The first day is spent on trips on the subway, walking along the canals, on barges, Peter and Paul fortress.On the second day they go to Tsarskoye Selo or Peterhof. All this takes a lot of time and to enjoy it you still need at least 2 days

And how are Maxim and Kristoff spending the summer? There are many different activities for children in Russia during the summer. Are they in summer camp, summer school, or is Aurora taking care of them now?
Haha! Good question. Josiah the Cameraman has been taking care of them. Along with 10 years of Drama Theatre training he is also certified as a Child Care teacher in the State of Florida. BUT right now we are on vacation with Kristoff and Maksim in a new Russian place for this channel and we will post it in 3 to 5 videos from now ;) You can actually catch a glimpse of it on our Telegram channel with Aurora.
The older children take turns watching them:)
Sveta and I had 3 business trips in the first 2 weeks of summer which gave us a lot of video content. You will see the kids soon. They have also been in the recent shorts.

Well, technically, Tsarskoye has become a part of Saint Petersburg only about 20 years ago. When I was a kid, it was a suburb. And in the time of Tsars it was countryside, and you would have to spend half a day to get there from the center. Speaking of which, I see you stayed somewhere near Mokhovaya street? Good choice. And those "guys" hanging about near Vitebskiy vokzal, are Russian soldiers, who were departing from that station to the front of the First World War to fight the Germans .

And one more thing if I may. Your wife told about two original paintings from the Amber room, that were returned from the Germany. As far as I remember there was one "painting" and one small table or chest. There were originally four paintings (or rather four Florentine mosaics) depicting five sences - touch and smell, sight, hearing and taste. They were not drawn but laid out of small stones of different colour. And our restorers had to recreate those by only a couple of fuzzy black and white photos. Imagine their feelings, when one of those original mosaics was found and they finally can compare them both? And discover that color of the stones is virtually identicall on them both? I can imagine that it was huge relief for them. For if they have guessed colors on that mosaic almost perfectly, it means that the whole Amber room, which they were recreating based on those same black and white photos looks almost indistiguishable from the original. And one more interesting fact for you. The Room was restored partially with the funds, raised by baron Eduard Oleg Alexandrovitch von Falz-Fein, russian aristocrat, who was born before the Revolution. He saw original Amber room before it was stolen. And after he saw recreated room, he said that it looks better. Which is probably true since it was never properly restored from Peter I times til the Second World War. And amber doesn't like heat from the stoves, which were the only means of warming the palace for two centuries.

Pushkin officially became part of Leningrad city in 1938. Much much more than 20 years ago. I was born in Pushkin in 1980 and even during that time it was part of Leningrad

I just looked at pictures. It is beautiful.
Classic European palace of course inspired by Versailles. France was the trend setter at the time concerning royal palaces. As fun as those places are they can be very daunting and the opulence overloads me after like an hour. The problem is those places have hundreds of rooms. I visited a few in Europe myself. For the question posed to us viewers in title no I don’t want to rule anything from anywhere I am glad that I don’t have to. It’s too much stress and trouble from my perspective. I prefer my calm comfy life.
You are the first to answer the question and also you are smart to first understand the burden that would come with it. I agree when visiting these places you must just be surrendered and take your visit is casually as you can because there is too much to see. It is better just to appreciate the atmosphere.

So glad I was introduced by our mutual friend Justin (Backyard Russia) for more insight of cultural differences. I am New Zealand (Kiwi) woman married to an American (who grew up in Charlotte North Carolina) but met him in Redding, California, from my initial visit and first large Overseas trip in 1999. (I had been to Australia several times, only a 3 hour plan trip away and often cheap flights) I relocated to the States 2001. I have not been back to NZ since moving. My husband and I have lived in 6 States starting from California where I met him to (Oregon, Wyoming, Nebraska, Georgia and North Carolina where we presently reside these past 12 years.
I experience quite the cultural shock from NZ living to American !

I heard that Catherine's palace was completely destroyed by the Nazis, and that the Soviet government completely restored it, as you say the amber room as well. I wonder is this the same Catherine's palace or is there another. Probably the first one. Petrograd is also known as Venice of the north. It's just gorgeous 🥰.

Обязательно посетите Александровский дворец в Пушкине. Он ещё ламповее. В нем я первый раз почувствовал ощущение, что здесь действительно могли бы жить люди. Очень уютные интерьеры, стильно и со вкусом

Для тех, кто посещает Царское Село, крайне рекомендую сходить также в Александровский дворец. Он расположен недалеко от Екатерининского дворца. Это один из последних дворцов, в котором в частности жил последний русский император. Николай II.
Этот дворец открылся буквально пару лет назад и он отличается от Екатерининского. Очень уютные интерьеры, много вещей. Тоже потрясающее место.

Если я правильно понял Джо говорит, что он понятия не имеет, что они говорят, намекая, как я понял, на наушник - а что разве не нашлось аудиогида на английском языке, чтобы Джозеф всё понял? If I get it right, Joe says he has no idea what they're saying, hinting, I understand, at the earpiece - and that there wasn't an audio guide in English for Joseph to understand?
Sveta told me English was not a choice this day. Usually at museums they have different language choices.

И ещё, там за Екатериниским парком есть ещё Баболовский парк, а там есть самая большая в мире Баболовскаяи ванная и выточена она из цельного куска гранита. Правда её закрыли на рестовоацию, но это только для отвода глаз, ибо выточенна она идеально и отшлифована, а весит она 40 тонн.
