Does America need a Reality Czar? That was New York Times tech columnist Kevin Roose's suggestion for how the Biden administration could help solve the so-called "reality crisis" facing the country.
The chaotic events of the January 6 Capitol riots marked the beginning of a new era of online content moderation. Not only did every major social media company kick Trump off their platforms, but Amazon Web Services, which owns about a third of the global cloud storage market, evicted the Twitter competitor Parler, and Apple and Google removed it from their app stores. Parler, which had signed on more than 13 million users, announced its relaunch on February 16.
Both Democrats and Republicans want Washington to have more influence over how big tech companies operate. There is a bi-partisan push to repeal Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, known as the internet's First Amendment, which would give the government more power to hold social media companies liable for the content that appears on their platforms.
President Biden has gone on the record in support of repealing Section 230. When, during an interview with then candidate Biden, the New York Times's editorial board called the regulation foundational to the modern internet, Biden responded, "That's right. Exactly right. And it should be revoked."
But the great deplatforming of 2021 has also energized the movement to build a new, radically decentralized internet that would allow users to escape whatever form the Reality Czar takes. Many of the projects in this space are trying different approaches to solving the same set of problems, such as how to give individuals control over their own digital identities, and how to store data in the cloud so that it can't be controlled or accessed by a large company subject to political pressure from the state.
Muneeb Ali is the CEO of Stacks, which has garnered some major backing for its effort to build a new computing platform that could become the foundation for a new decentralized internet.
"Regardless of which side of the debate you're on with certain political figures getting banned on social media platforms that is not the point," said Ali. "The point is no one should have that type of power."
A project called Filecoin is building a decentralized cloud storage system that allows computers all over the world to contribute space on their hard drives, which can be accessed through the InterPlanetary File System, an alternative protocol to the "http" that underpins today's web. In exchange, they get paid with a digital token. If Parler ran on IPFS and Filecoin, it would be difficult for a government or any third-party actor, like Amazon, to shut down their service.
"In a world in which you can truly take your data with you and take the app with you and everything, you have so much more control" said Molly Mackinlay, a project lead for IPFS
"We just address the problem at its root. It's like, all right, well, may as well just rewrite it." said Gaken Wolfe-Pauly, co-founder of Urbit.
Urbit is an entirely new operating system that Wolfe-Pauly envisions becoming as all purpose as WeChat is in China, which allows users to make social media posts, send direct messages, make calls, play games, hail taxis and pay bills online and in-person. Except with Urbit, the user owns all the data, as opposed to a Chinese company that shares it with the government to monitor the activities of its citizens.

      Decentralized infrastructure of course (-:
With wireless communication, ad hoc and mesh networks can be setup. This is more difficult than a centralized approach, but can be done with consumer-grade hardware.

A couple of observations, and I have a video discussing half of this. One: blockchain is inappropriate for robust decentralized communication, as without the entire chain in possession, the chain is broken and therefore fails verification, plus it's slow. Two: true censorship-free information sharing will be used by all kinds of people, including the worst; "no censorship" requires no way to moderate, and that means private medical records, doxxing, and loads of child porn will all be part of any truly anti-censorship system of communication. They will also be how authorities manage to kill off the entire network with the public's blessing and arrest anyone using it.
Also, stuff like Minds, BitChute, LBRY/Odysee, etc. are NOT DECENTRALIZED. They may use decentralized components, but the domain names, core servers, etc. are single points of failure that can easily be taken away.

I think this is a good step to take, I've long been in favor of people owning their data, but I would still be concerned about the algorithms. The reason I support repealing section 230 is not for the government to control who gets banned, but to hold companies accountable for having algorithms that boost polarizing, extremist, and false information for profit. I think that polarization and radicalization is a bigger problem than deplatforming right now because if you solve polarization you will also solve much of the deplatforming problem. I think this is important, but neglects that social media is also has cult problem.

Interesting, it was decentralization that drove the beginning of Apple, and other long gone system platforms. It is a bit ironic that we have then gone back to centralization which is driving us back to decentralization again. It is also interesting that that same dynamic is what created the internet (the need and desire for decentralization)(plus a wartime need) then back to the centralization, and now a few years later back toward the path of decentralization. I wonder if connection providers will offer the ability once again to directly host your own site without a business connection?

Can someone please clarify for me. Is the underlying concept here that you get a critical mass of people to contribute their spare computing power/storage to a network that then acts as a decentralized cloud computing platform to run the internet on? In other words, instead of a few massive centralized server farms owned by a couple of companies that handle all of the internet's traffic, it's millions of people contributing a little bit of computing power to create the infrastructure to handle internet traffic free from any central authority's control. Is that about right or am I missing/misunderstanding something?

"It feels good to control your own data"
Okay, but is your platform convenient, easy to use, and easy to understand? Is it easier than google? Until then, I won't be using it because my apathy is still strong enough to outweigh my distrust in centralized systems. Maybe I'm an idiot, but convenience is everything.

I'm working on a decentralized system that is better than all the inferior stuff mentioned in this video, and this is by far the #1 problem with it. Nerds think it's so cool to do "muh crypto decentralized thing" but they forget that if it's even remotely difficult to use, no critical mass of normal users will ever show up. It's like how torrents are a pain to use because you have to download a client and download a file that then lets the client download the file(s) you actually wanted, which is a lot more trouble than older file sharing systems with built-in search: you find and download everything in one unified interface, vs. torrents where there is a learning curve that can be quite confusing for a lot of people.

      You're not alone.
Decentralized social media with all the same features as FB is not going to kill FB. There are many microblogging platforms, none of which is a threat to Twitter. The only way the new apps will takeoff is if they do something the centralized apps don't do. "It's better because it's decentralized!" is not going to be enough to overcome the network effect that the centralized players have.
The decentralized net needs a killer app, something new and not available (or maybe even impossible) on the centralized net.

You aren’t an idiot. You jus value convenience over security/privacy. It is indeed true that in order to take on google, the platform needs to be just as easy or easier to use. It will get there.

You're not wrong and I fully agree. People like convenience, else everyone would be riding around in Tanks and wearing bulletproof vests... Use what you value. Decentralized tech has a long way to go. If we could figure out a way to make tanks as fast and easy to use as cars in cyber-space, I'm pretty sure most people would switch. We need to offer the same features plus our own.
