I've been a Priest fan since 1979 that's 45 years and I can tell you right now that this is the best album that they've made in the last 35 years...not that the others are bad because they're not....they all are great. Even Nostradamus has good stand alone songs.....but this album is better than Firepower and will once again be one of the best Metal albums of 2024 God Bless Metal.....and God Bless Judas Priest!

Being the best album since Painkiller doesn't mean anything. Priest haven't released an album that comes even close to Paikiller or any album released since 1983. Priest never managed to come back to their old greatness after Halford's split.

Word. This album should have been made after Painkiller. Its pretty diverse aswell, Panic Attack is a pinnacle of the album. Gets you right back to their golden era of 80´s. That intro is insane, Turbo and Painkiller vibes all over in it.

Halford's vocals and the music are blowing me away. This might be my favorite thing Priest have done since Painkiller. It's that good.🤘Yes I know saying "best since Painkiller" is almost a meme at this point but I mean it. I didn't expect Firepower and Invincible Shield to be this good this late into Priest's career.

When I was listening to this album, it sounded so different and yet so familiar, and ultimately I think that is what makes it quintessential Judas Priest. From its composition to its production, it reaches into the past and future to create an album that outdoes any competitor. At points it honours Painkiller, at others Redeemer of Souls, at others even Halford's Crucible.
To me, the fact that the best songs are probably not even the singles is why this album is a massive win. "Gates of Hell", 'As God Is My Witness", "Escape from Reality", and the bonus "Gight of Your Life" are crazy, and they are just the tip of the iceberg. Pushing through cancer, aneurysms, and Parkinson's to produce something this good? Only the Metal Gods ever could.

No band has continued to amaze as much as Judas Priest! The majority of 80’s bands can’t deliver with new music worth listening to. Judas Priest is a different band. They are as powerful as ever. Great album. I love the new music! Maiden can’t capture its past but Priest shows us all why they are the metal gods. Crank it up!

I agree. Maiden's Shenshutsu (I think that is what it is called) sounded very tired and indifferent to me. I liked Book of Souls but I was disappointed with this one. Still, after 40 years I shouldn't be too hard on this one. They have been one of the most consistent bands I know. JP on the other hand are special.

@@AGoat1971I understand why people feel this way but people leave bands for various reasons and they were replaced by people with amazing talent.
Scott Travis is the best drummer this band has ever had and they were reborn when he joined. Richie Faulkner has proven he belongs and Glenn might be limited in what he can play but he is still writing the songs and Andy who is actually the albums producer plays Glenn's parts, or at least the parts Glenn can't play himself anymore with the same tone and sound. Ian Hill is still one of the best and most consistent bassists in the world. Do we even have to talk about Halford still being able to have a five octave voice at 72?
This is not some tribute band. If KK wanted to be there then he shouldn't have left. That's everyone's main beef. If KK was there no one would be complaining or disrespecting them. He's not though and quite frankly He's proved through his own music with KK's Priest that he just doesn't write very good songs. He's a flashy talented guitarist and really nothing more. That is not disrespectful and I really hoped his band would not sound like a tribute band but yet They do.
You're right this isn't the band from the '80s. When you say '80s you mean before 1985. They ran out of ideas with that group and new blood was necessary. Painkiller proved the Priest still had life. The last three records with Halford proved Judas Priest was capable of modernizing their sound and have created a new generation of fans.
This isn't the band from the '80s. Everyone that mattered is still there though and honestly the music they're putting out now should be appreciated for what it is and whenever you want to hear classic Judas Priest you can find it on every record they have produced. Not to mention they are still absolutely amazing live.
This band isn't living in the past and if you want to well that is your right but don't act like this isn't Judas Priest as well. This band has always had changing lineups and still managed to deliver the goods.
I really hope you give this a chance as this is seriously one of the best records any version of Judas Priest has ever made.
I wish you well and hope you open your heart and your ears to a band that is still doing what they love.
There's a reason why everyone left and there's a reason why people chose to continue. KK is practically begging to get back in and it will not happen until he's willing to admit he was a complete jerk to the rest of the band. His book has some of the best toilet paper you will ever wipe your ass with and he comes off as a desperate man who got left behind.
Don't get left behind as well. This is what Priest is and has always been. One of the best bands in the world.

@@wendychan6679Your comment actually makes sense. I still haven't made it all the way through Maiden's newest record but I can tell you it does get really good towards the end. It suffers from the songs being too long and Maiden has changed their style to be more progressive metal. Very complicated songs but some of them just don't hit right. Book of Souls was great and even better live.
When I was growing up it was always an argument over who was better Priest or Maiden and the most maiden album you will hear right now is Bruce's current solo album as the Mandrake project is really good.
I just like the fact that you actually had something to say and you made a good point. It's okay not to like the current incarnations of both bands as long as you understand and have given a chance to the new material. I commend you for actually giving things a try as this allows you to have an informed opinion. I wish all comments had as much substance.
Regardless up with the irons and long live the priest!

I felled tears throughout my entire first playthrough. When the acoustic solo on Giants in the Sky came through I almost broke down. To me it felt like the final puzzle piece on the album, a throwback to Baptizm of Fire, and just, such a powerful vindication of our love and support for the band for however long we’ve been fans of them.
Your conclusion, to me, is perfect. A present from the band, to us, the fans. Crafted with love and dedication.

I’m a huge fan of Priest’s early 80’s/late 70’s work, and there are a BUNCH of great moments on the album… but man, the chorus to Fight for your life is the best thing on the album for me!

I started my metal journey with Metallica and delving deeper when I discovered Iron Maiden. A couple of months after that I heard the name Judas Priest and bought one of those cheap boxsets with 5 albums, I listened to Sin after Sin first. I might have watched the YT video of Breaking the law prior but I'm not sure. All I remember is being impressed by the front and backcover and pressing play and "Sinner" came on... What a great way to start my journey. For 10 years I've preferred Maiden just a tad but in recent months things changed and I've been listening to Priest nonstop. In a few days I'll see them live after their 2018 concert was cancelled due to Ozzys health. I've waited 6 years but I'm sure it will be great.

I overall prefer the 76-early 78 stuff to the late 78-81 stuff but it's hard to pick favourites when even the good or alright albums have a couple classic songs I'ld could listen to over and over.

I like what I am hearing and this brings to mind something I had written in my Queen blog, about their 1984 album The Works. "I am going on about album sequencing here, because I strongly believe that an album by a rock or metal band should be like a live show. They should come on strong, with songs which get your attention (in a good way) then after track 2 or 3, you can do what ever you want. To put it in Queen terms, the opening tracks on side 1 should deafen and blind you, much like the live show and not lull you to sleep, then wake you up with a knock on the head. However, if the idea is to disarm the listener, I understand."
In the case of Judas Priest, I believe that they are doing exactly what I expect and besides, they are a metal band after all and why open with a ballad, unless the idea is to disarm, before the hard knock on the head to wake us up? I can't wait to hear the whole thing tomorrow morning, while drinking coffee and eating my breakfast, with my EarPods on.

Priest fan here since '83. One of the biggest. And this album is a fucking masterpiece. They somehow tapped into almost every era of Priest!! I'm simply blown away by how great every song is on this album. BLOWN. AWAY. And, let's give Richie major, major credit. He injected new life into the band. While Firepower was brilliant.....he's pushed himself so much further. First, what he and Scott did with Elegant Weapons was absolutely mind-blowing. My fear was that they may have blown their wad on that album instead of this one. Well, holy shit, they went even higher. The drum work and guitar solos/riffs on this album are incredible. And Rob's voice?? He sounds like he did back on Halford's "Crucible."
Yes, this is their best since Painkiller. You could argue it's better, but my brain won't let me do that. :)
This album deserves to sell millions. Sadly, it won't given how bad the music industry is now. But, wow, how lucky are we to get an album of this caliber when half the band is in their SEVENTIES???? I'm so grateful.

The good thing about this album is that you can put it on ans listen to the whole album without skipping.
Does it matter that they are defined by age etc as long as it turns the younger generations on to the best genre of music .
Sadley seeing these bands coming to their autumn years means that once gone who can fill the voids . There is not many bands nowadays that has that stardom, power and air about them .
I say let rock right to the end 🤘🤘🤘

Invincible Shield is amazing! After Firepower I never expected Priest to be able to produce a follow-up that could match it, but they pulled this one out of the bag.
Firepower and Invincible Shield feel like Screaming for Vengeance and Defenders of the Fate 2.0
Firepower and SFV might have some stronger individual songs, but IS and DOF are more consistent as a whole and none of the tracks fall behind from each other.
There are only 2 (slight) criticisms I have of the album so far:
    1) The riffs. Aside from "The Serpent & the King" I can't really say there were any that stuck with me after a first listen. They're by no means bad, just not many that I could really remember from memory after 2 listens.
    2) I was expecting the songs to be a bit longer, with more changes - especially after Richie said there would be some more "Prog" elements to the album, like on Sin After Sin. I definitely got that from the title track, "Escape from Reality" and "Panic Attack" to a lesser extent, but not really from the rest. Again, not a bad thing, it was just a personal expectation of mine.
    Positives:
    Everything else!
Special mention to Rob's voice and Richie's solos which are other-worldly!
Overall, a mesmirizing album with no "weak" tracks which I'll be playing on repeat for weeks.
I have yet to determine if I like it more than Firepower, but it's definitely in the same league.

I just did first full listen and did some review notes and I'll just sum it up: It's better than Firepower. It's an all timer. Only track I'd have cut is Crown of Horns and my opinion on that hasn't changed since the single, listening to it dozens of times. Everything on this album is at least an A-grade and at most all time great, with few moments of exception.

I also dont think it sounds like Firepower, but there is a common flavor among all the Faulkner albums. I also think it sticks to the Angel of Retribution mantra of "They like Painkiller but they like classic Priest, too" and tries to cater to a bit of everyone. It's not as safe as Angel, but also not as experimental as Redeemer; and it has quality production, and nothing feels repetitive or overcooked (long).

No comments on the Guitar work? Man, this is amazing! And what hell of Solos! This is by far ways better than most of the Outputs of any other bands of the last years. And the answer to the question of the title of this video is that this is the best album since Painkiller. Period.

Got the special edition this weekend and listened to it yesterday and it's a GREAT album. NO FILLER. Top to bottom ass kicker. Even the bonus tracks are amazing. If you can, I highly recommend getting the Target special edition for the bonus tracks.
I listened to Firepower immediately after and forgot how good that one was as I hadn't listened to it in a few years. So good. They're definitely on a roll.

Great review! And you are right, it's a great album.
The first priest album I had minus a greatest hits was Jugulator. And I saw Rob support Maiden in 2000. That's how I saw it, but when Tim left and Rob came back it was mixed emotions. And then Ken retired and I had mixed emotions.
I can happily say this is the first album since the reformation that I have clicked with. Amazing!

100% Agree! This album is not only one of Judas Priest's greatest ever it will also I believe live long as as an inspiration to a generation of musicians who may not have even it thought it possible to produce your best work after 70. Rob and Glenn have done just that IMHO.

A couple of thoughts after my first listen:
    - I like the harmonizing vocals. They haven't done much of that over the years, and it gives them more depth.
    - The albums keeps a pretty good pace. Even "Crowns of Thorns" and "Trial By Fire" do not drag it down, but augments from some of the other faster tracks.
    - is "The Lodger" a sequel to "The Ripper"? 🤔
    - I don't care what anyone says: "Son of Thunder" is on constant repeat
This album should be the soundtrack to the next Thor movie 😃

Along with Extreme's Six and Helloween's Helloween, this is another album that sounds like the band went back in time 30 years and made the album that should have followed their peak - except in Priest's case that WAS their comeback, making it even more astonishing.

I was afraid I wasn't going to like it. It was really good and I think they are trying to mix a little flavor of their different styles over the years. Priest has been one of my all time favorites I grew up listening to unleashed in the east and sad wings. I know people say it's not priest and I don't agree and I am just that they are putting out good music and they are still around after all this time. It's has been a good year with a maiden another favorite and priest and I am happy that I am still on this planet and blessed with priest and maiden putting out good music. This was very positive in a dark time and I needed this

Richie Faulkner's guitar playing really shines on this album. It gives you that 1970's and 1980's Judas Priest feel to it. Rob Halford, as usual is the Metal God. Great vocals as always. The drumming by Scott Travis is also superb and helps to drive every song deep into metal madness. If you are an old fan and haven't heard this line-up of the band you should definitely do so. This albums grade is a solid A.

It always takes me several listens to get into a new Priest album...but not this one. Loved it the first time through. Not a bad song on it, Agree it is one of their strongest - it isn't "Painkiller", but it is just as good - especially if you consider the 3 tracks on the deluxe edition - they are as good as any others, hoping you will update this video to include that!

I have always held JP at an extremely high standard. And after hearing this album in full I am very impressed. You are so right about how the songs are so much different from one another, but still speak to us. The only song I'm having a bit of trouble adapting to is Escape From Reality. It is a good song, but something I'm not used to hearing from JP. Great album Rob, Richie, Glenn, Ian, Scott, and Andy.

At the moment Firepower is still a better album for me, but Invincible Shield is still a phenomenal album. Judas Priest has never failed me. In anticipation, I listened to another JP album that had been a challenge to create. The Invincible Shield has a tough task of succeeding sensational Firepower, but it was just as much pressure to properly mark Rob's return 20 years ago with the Angel of Retribution. And I dare defy all those mixed and mediocre reviews: I absolutely love that record from start to finish. Not a place here to develop on that but, frankly, I recommend a good unbiased sincere listen to any Priest or in general metal fan, especially those who underestimate that _reuniting_ album, perhaps misguided by reviews. And whoever wants just a short teaser, the solo in Demonizer is... hard to describe. A composition in itself, within the song. Though faster, at one point it even resembles that to Beyond the Realms of Death.

Whether intentional or not, I've heard at least one nod to the Painkiller album.... Listen to the chorus of "Devil in Disguise," specifically the background vocal accenting "disguise" (on the second repeat of the chorus). It drove me batty and I knew I had heard that somewhere else. It took a little digging and I found it. Listen to "Leather Rebel" off the Painkiller album and pay attention to the chorus. When the line "Lightning in the Dark" hits, that same background vocal is there accenting "Dark."

Richie Faulkner has revitalized Judas Priest !! Glenn Tipton a Amazing lead Guitarist and Riff writer even though his playing ability has been effected due to his Illness . Can still at least write & pitch in with the song and more noticeably Guitar music writing , and Faulkner brings it to life with Tipton's aggression !! This is a perfect follow up to Painkiller IMO . Which I have been waiting for since 1990 !! Halfords solo project FIGHT was a close follow up . The 1st FIGHT record was a instant classic not a bad song on it . Thank You JUDAS PRIEST for keeping METAL Music going in the 2020's !!!!

I took a listen to the entire album, including the 3 bonus tracks and I love it. Even The Lodger is okay with me, even if it sounds more like David Bowie than Priest, as I love both. I am happy that not every song uses the same guitar tuning and I think that one or two songs even goes back to E standard tuning. Sons of Thunder and Vicious Circle come to mind as they are both in the key of E natural. This brings me to the previous track to Sons of Thunder, with Escape from Reality starting in D and modulating to E, leading right into the next song nicely. With Fight of Your Life, the word bluesy guitar riff came to mind, something like Jimi Hendrix or something from the 70s and again, I don't mind that because I like all things rock and metal. However, I believe I may have heard a very similar riff before, not unlike Revolution and Mountain Song by Jane's Addiction, which bothered me at first, but I have let it go a long time ago. No matter, I love it and this is probably among the best of the 2005 and onward albums.
