- In this video we do our best to help the newcomers to the hobby understand the ramifications of choosing new tires for their RC cars. AJ walks you through the ins and outs of tire selection, but without actually telling you "what to buy". The choice, as always, is up to you, for there are different tires for different applications, and if you understand the "why" of an issue, you can make the right decision concerning the choice before you. Is it a shelf queen? Is it a rig you intend on bashing hard? These questions matter, and they are just two of the questions you should ask yourself when contemplating a purchase for your RC.

Im new at this, just got a set of Duratrax lockups 12mm hex for my Redcat Volcano, in ten minutes i hollowed out all thr hexs, tires are trash, they were way to big, thanks for your video, live and learn right.

Thanks for info..also for off-sets..but the marked for wheels/tires is just bigger i the US than in northern Europe,at least in recent years!

A great video for the basics of tires, thank you very much! Does anyone know what to expect if I swap stock tires to wider ones? Will the car become more understeery or oversteery or does the width affect steering in any way?

In my experience the Badlands swell a lot at speed. I favor the stock tires for grassy areas. Pavement? I’m unsure about that one. Thanks for asking 😎👍
I wanna rum crawlers on my 3s traxxas. Can i use a single cell foam to stop the ballooning? There has to be a way. 😢
what was that tire called that you showed with the yellow wheel, the little "pins" you mentioned that are good on those clay track surfaces? We are building a track at my buddies house and I want to get the best tire for that environment. thank you for the help!
Senton 3S stock tires servo, 12tooth pinon stock spur, BLX185 and 2050kv motor = 6.5lbs, Makita 14.4v6.0Ah=1lb, Droid shell =4.5lbs = total weight shy 12lbs. 45 min battery mix 50/100 throttle at up to full trigger on medium pack sand with gravel, some rock face, minimal grass. Only driven in desert conditions, on a front lawn and no tachometer available, I cannot get speed ratings at this time. See my Vasquez rocks bash vids for performance characteristics.
The question: If I go with smaller than stock tires, will that compensate for speed lost by added weight at similar power drain? 14mm hex to 12mm and the tire size depending is the path, is it a good one to follow?
Adding smaller tires will lower the gearing a bit and shouldn't improve your speed, however, it will allow the runtime to improve and it should keep the heat down for the motor and ESC. I would definitely try it and see if I liked the way it changed things concerning handling and the overall speed. Your rig sounds like a beast. I hope this helps. Thanks for asking, AJ.
@@AJJAMStudios Thanks for replying, AJ. If it weren't for the 5S dead-band of the modern Arrma ESC, I could run full Makita 18v9.0Ah (~790g). (That these power tool batteries are on the light/mid range of equivalent Li-Po weights stunned me.) (I also see I can go 3rd party 5S ESC/motor combo for next time.)
My rig is a Star Wars droid called a Scrubber and Sentons are the hot, go-to chassis for one. The R2 Builders Club recently debuted an annual Scrubber race/demolition bash and were quite the hit. Arrma is seeing an uptick in Senton sales this past month or two. lolz. Thus, my additional comments on your 6S build videos I made.
On shooting the unboxing of my M.I.B. Senton 6S today, I'm now finding the layout is so different from the 3S that the lack of swap-able parts is a detriment in my case. Also, the historic value of this complete, sealed baggie, cling-wrap shell and pristine condition specimen for what I would be doing to it, I truly hate to modify it as needed.
It would be like stumbling across a Datsun 240 kept in a garage under a tarp on a lift off the ground since it was bought and never driven once til now 50yrs later. You darn well keep it in the garage and undriven for the history of it at that point no matter how much you might want to tear around in it. So too with this Senton. It's too beautiful to ruin. Are there truly historical collectors out there that would be into this model? I fully recognize this is a sword for a far better swordsman than I.
(PS. The Star Wars Mouse droid (Chewbacca scares away on the Death Star 1977) typically features a Traxxas Bandit these days as the go-to chassis of choice.)
That sounds really cool. What are you planning on doing with the Senton then?
@@AJJAMStudios As said, the Sentons have become the go-to chassis for the Scrubber droid. From there, in general, we go around to charity events, hospitals, libraries, community stuff like parades, animal shelters/rescues, all that kind of thing. When we are at convention style gatherings, we cut loose with races and derbies for the crowds. Sometimes we'll have a booth to recruit new members, most times we are there for photo ops for the kids (of all ages). Search something like "darth vader hospital visit" and you'll get the idea. The costume groups are all film-accurate replicas. Our R2-D2 and other droids are so accurate they are used in the new tv shows.
Cost of entry to the R2 Builders Club is one droid, any droid -such as a 'Scrubber' (powered by a Senton 3S and covered with an 8-gallon Rubbermaid Action Packer tote adorned with doodads). Or a Mouse powered by a Traxxas bandit. The full R2-D2s, Choppers BB-8's and the like are an entirely different level of roboticism , but the Mice and Scrubbers provide an easy and 'cheap' way to get involved in the club. Most of us start wanting only to build one droid, but wind up with several. lol.
Thanks for all the information. I have a 1/12 scale buggy, 12mm hex with 2mm axles. Most of the tires/wheels online are for 4mm axels. Are there adaptors or another way to fit the 4mm holes?
Thanks for the great video. I’d like to know which tires and rims you have on your Lasernut. Seems to be 2.2 beadlocks, probably with large offset?? How’s the look?
Believe it or not, I picked these up at my local hobby store on a sale (they had bunches of them at the time) and I had no rigs to put them on at the time. When I got the Lasernut I was amazed to find they fit and looked awesome. I don't usually like the V-rib designed tires because they usually suffer when it comes to traction, (in certain circumstances) but these work pretty well overall. I can't say what they are, for they were generic in nature, and I threw the packaging away over a year ago. I wish I could do more. Thanks for commenting. AJ

We bought them some time ago but they are Duratrax tires. I’m afraid I don’t remember the exact model. But I think you’ll recognize them when you see them. Search Duratrax on eBay and they should pop up. Be sure they are 17mm. I hope this helps😎👍
@@AJJAMStudios same query re the pavement tyres on Talion. Are they a similar size to the Talion stock tyres? I don’t want to play with gearing.
Secondly, what other tyres do you recommend for the Talion exb? Thanks
i only drive HPI cars . tires on the new HPI's are shit , but the 12mm hex is widely available

Good question, but I have one for you. What are you planning on doing, racing, speed, drifting, or straight out bashing? For us we like bash drifting with a dash of ripping around. For that purpose the limitless tires shine and fit right on. For a larger tire you can get two sets of rear Felony tires to get a bit of lift. For speed, foam works well. Thanks for asking 😎👍
💭🤔Can the Kraton 6s ties fit the big rock 6s with out a problem?

I would love to help on this, and perhaps one day I will be able to, but we don’t crawl all that much so I won’t know enough to recommend anything for that class of RC. Does that spectrum remote work for Lowering the brakes on an Xmaxx?
It does do the job, however you may need to change the settings in the ESC to get the throttle response you're looking for. Adding the Link module to your Traxxas radio does give you the option to turn the breaks down by using the app. The choice, as always, is yours. 😎👍
Question. I'm new to RC and don't have much money. I got a nice import with a brushless motor. The tires are 85mm and I noticed they don't have foam inserts in them. Do I need foam inserts in them? Where can I get 85mm inserts? I have been able to find every other part for the car except that.
Depends if u have soft tires get foam inserts and vent them
What tires was them for thedbxle you sad that digs good lookin to run them on my kraton 8s not the proline ones

What tires are those? I would like some for my 1;10 scale rc 11:13 or something similar
A Chinese off brand. We got them with the Reeper 24mm hex upgrade. I have no link to them, it’s been too long since we got them. You might search Reeper 24mm hex upgrade on eBay and find them. Good luck.

Late to the party but bigger tires on my typhon 6s gives me better battery life. Science can explain.
With the bigger tires (backflips) I can run it at 4s (75% power) with 6s speed. Stock tire size is like running a 4s battery but with 100% power.
Hope that cleared up bigger tires don't kill the battery faster unless you want to run at 100% with 8s speeds and break the 6s car 😂
