If someone does know a lot about the human body does that make them a... know-body? And here I thought the school bullies were being mean, but they were just complimenting me on my knowledge of human anatomy.
That whale earwax stuff happens in my lab! I’ve delaminated and analyzed hormones in over 20 plugs now - we’ve been presenting on cortisol (stress hormone) and progesterone (pregnancy hormones) at the 22nd Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals in Halifax! Ends tomorrow :)
This is by far one of THE BEST SciShow Quiz Show episodes I have ever freaking seen. And Stefan’s winner/loser prize overview was EPIC. Thank you Michael, Colin, Hank, and Stefan. Keep up the good work everybody! Also, how big a contributor on Patreon do you have to be in order to be selected as a pseudo-contestant? Basically, does my $2/mo contribution level ever get considered? Either way, I love everything you guys do. DFTBA!
We draw from our entire pool of Patreon patrons for the names, so your contribution (which we very much appreciate!) definitely puts you in the running!
4:35 "Eating peeps won't help you when you are sick."Somebody should scientificly prove that, and I think that I should be that somebody. But I have to experiment on myself,I feel soooooooo bad for me.
Sooo I read this comment before the questions even started, and reading someone offering to eat 'peeps' for a science experiment gave me a bit of a fright. This considering I'm from the UK where we don't have peeps marshmallows, so I read this to mean the abbreviation of 'people'. I genuinely read this comment as you offering to eat yourself for science.
Its really bad that I knew the answer to the hiccup question. Because of my EMS class. We were talking about the Vegus nerve and how it can be stimulated when pooping, and the teacher actually had a call where someone passed out because they were constipated and straining and it messed with their blood pressure. yep. That's a thing I know.
Best cure of hiccups is a sharp inhalation of air...doesnt need to be a lot of air, just a very fast inhale. Its why scaring people works, they gasp, and probably the same reason for the finger up the butt. Now, with that said, whatever you do, dont imagine that *nearly 10" long earwax log* GROSS!!! lol
Holy crap someone else who doesn't live in 2011 is talking about Terraria. I thought that game was dead by 2012. I've picked it up recently. Loooove it so much, just made my first suit of Adamantite armor!
I thought the phrase would be "really smart," Hank. As Michael said it, it would be "real, smart," both modifying "people." Adjectives are not supposed to modify other adjectives, only nouns. Adverbs, such as "really," can modify adjectives however.
Hank, you can still grow Mallow flowers, using the roots to make Marsh Mallow. 😉 The flowers almost look like a pinkish Hollyhock. Very pretty flowers that bees & butterflies enjoy. I know this, because I grow it. Just haven't used it for coughs. Just for bees & butterflies.
I really like the idea of a game show and i also have some personal ideas of constructive criticism to put it nicely. I think the points in between the answer reveal could be a little more brief or concise. Overall though I really enjoyed this cute little game show theme and the casual feel it had on the episode.
Adam Rasmussen ~ Yes I know. I commented because he is wearing a WheezyWaiter shirt and Colin, Michael and Hank are friends of Craig Benzine. Also Colin does resemble Craig slightly, what with the beard and all.
Instead of pepsi or coke, mountain dew or sprite could make for a better treatment for phytobezoar. Mtn Dew and Sprite contain organic acids that should ( theoretically) work better at dissolving the organic plant material. The phosphoric acid in coke and pepsi is better at dissolving metals, but worse at dissolving organic compounds like the plant material in the phytobezoar.
@scishow Where I live, you can buy the "marshmallow" cough drops. They are called "Eibischteig" maybe you can find them online if you are interested in how they taste!
I like the Sci Show Quiz Show very much. But I have a suggestion to make it more interesting: My idea, don't always make Hank play against someone else. Let others be the contestants, e.g. Michael Aranda! Hank could also be the host once! Or they both don't take part and it's a new team overall, why not?
u forgot to mention that Mallow plant can be used as a drug... a hallucinating stimulant. via the roots. make lots of tea.. u can eat the leaves raw, lots of nourishment and vitamin E & C, like a loooot. Dandelion is similar. also a food and drug.
As late as the 1970's you could get small bottles of Coca Cola syurp from pharmacies. My mom kept it on hand to treat nausea. Anybody know if drug stores still carry it?
Hiccups are not a joke. I had them for 48 hours straight. Violent unable to sleep or eat hiccups. I would have stuffed a bowling ball up there if I had thought it would help. lol
WAIT A MINUTE....I am most interested in the idea that I could collect samples of my ear wax at regular intervals and store them for archeological study. How would you like to open a time capsule full of capsules full of earwax?
@SciShow i guess u Made a mistake at 7:05 ... the diaphragm is controlled by the phrenic nerve ... the vagus nerve does a lot of stuff but not the diaphragm (in fact it doesn't even have the qualities to make normal muscles move)
love the quizzes with Michael!! Holy blank! so that’s why they’re called marshmallows!! i always wondered about that. got only one right this time - the Coke (or Pepsi) question. and i give myself 1/2 for blubber. so whales have ear wax!? but, if it plugs up the ear canal, how do they hear their calls? is that why they’re so piercing? or maybe because it just doesn’t really stop the sound waves at all? 🐳
I actually have eaten marshmallows when sick before, even though they were the sugary manufactured kind they did help make my throat feel a little better
I love Michael's horrified reaction whenever Hank starts talking- it's great.
My day just go 1 million times better, because sci show quiz show got uploaded!
If someone does know a lot about the human body does that make them a... know-body?
And here I thought the school bullies were being mean, but they were just complimenting me on my knowledge of human anatomy.
Master Therion Sir, the door is this way.
Master Therion back at it again with his top comment
Therion, great as usual :-) becoming a staple of the SciShow culture hehehe
Master Therion
LOL 😁 👏
Master Therion Will no one mention his profile pic that’s from supernatural?

4:35 "Eating peeps won't help you when you are sick."Somebody should scientificly prove that, and I think that I should be that somebody. But I have to experiment on myself,I feel soooooooo bad for me.
Oh, you feel bad you say? Sounds like a good time to start the experiment.
so hank is probably immortal because of that time he ate a hundred peeps?
Sooo I read this comment before the questions even started, and reading someone offering to eat 'peeps' for a science experiment gave me a bit of a fright. This considering I'm from the UK where we don't have peeps marshmallows, so I read this to mean the abbreviation of 'people'. Marshmallow peeps do have an advantage of not causing kuru.
These videos are lot of fun to watch!

yep. That's a thing I know.
Also that whale is at the NYC Museum isn't it? That's where my cousin got engaged!
Don't feel bad about knowing stuff. It just means you can impress/wierd out your friends. Or have cool stories to tell in the TH-cam comments section.
This episode is an emotional rollercoaster
My brain turns to JELLO when I have to take a test.
So when your crush has hiccups tell her you know how to cure it.
I meant hiccups..
why, what did the comment say before he edited it?
peabrainiac i need to know!
Maikel hoi yes he will like that good idea
peabrainiac it said cough..
Finally a Colin with the correct spelling!!
Florian and Granger... such harry potter references
:D

Now, with that said, whatever you do, dont imagine that *nearly 10" long earwax log* GROSS!!! lol
You should make a video explaining why things hurt worse when your cold. I've always wondered that.
"You know how Shrek..." This is truly the forsaken realm.
Hey, I've never seen Colin Hickey outside of Beer and Board Games. There he is right there.
TRASH STOOOOVE, TRASH STOOOOVE....
Colin’s voice. WOAH!!
I hope that's a good Woah! :)
The Romans found that marshmallows worked well as a laxative
Who else want the *COVETED* 'I lost scishow quiz badge'
I learned that bezoar curing arsenic poison from terraria, where you can use bezoar to make you immune to poison debuff.
I'm pretty sure the hornet's stingers aren't made out of arsen. Good point though.
Holy crap someone else who doesn't live in 2011 is talking about Terraria. I thought that game was dead by 2012. I've picked it up recently. Loooove it so much, just made my first suit of Adamantite armor!
YES! Hank asked exactly what I wondered about when Michael said the opening.
The diaphragm is supplied by the phrenic, not vagus nerve. C3, 4, 5 keeps the diaphragm alive :)
Am I the only person who plays along?
Ended up with 1600 points. (gambled 800 last round)
I shall anxiously await my solid-gold-except-it's-not Pin To End All Pins!
Did.. . DID HANK JUST WIN? that like.. NEVER happens...
I'm so happy Hank, I rooted for you every time
World record for number of fish drawn in 1minute is 65
In Dutch, we have the word 'Bezwaar', which sounds a lot like bezoar.
It means 'Objection'
I think that's pretty hilarious.
Thank you SciSchow for this new take. I love this upgrade to your already amazing work.
I'm so happy that I did well on this!! Lol
Well that explains why I never get hiccups.
Instant like after the hiccups "try it at home" advise XD
According to my girlfriend, I don't know the human body all too well.
Pibbles 'n Bits
What did you say to her.
You should tell her, "you know what would help a hiccup?"
0:45 YES! I wasn't paying attention because I kept thinking about what he meant!
Belching from pop also works well for hiccups!!! My tried and true cure
I thought the phrase would be "really smart," Hank. As Michael said it, it would be "real, smart," both modifying "people." Adjectives are not supposed to modify other adjectives, only nouns. Adverbs, such as "really," can modify adjectives however.
Phrenic nerve for diaphragm, not vagus nerve. Finger treatment still seems legitimate though.
Yup, it won an Ignobel Prize.
Where can I find Hank's supposedly numerous fish drawings?
Not that I want to get sick but...yeah I’m definitely trying the Peep thing :-)
I'm going to go ahead and eat Peeps when I'm sick anyway.
Loving the new graphics. And I'm sold on the pin.
making a gif of Mr. Aranda saying "finger up the butt" brb
Marshmallow is one of the key ingredients in Ricola cough drops, which are the best cough drops. So yeah, this is still used today! Facts!
I'm working on a project for biology, it's a poster demonstrating tropic levels and food chains and all that jazz
Marshmallow is a common ingredient in teas
Most massages are technically digital, am I right?
As someone who's had a bariatric surgery that's interesting info to know about the coke.
"It's printed in solid gold except it's not" haha :)
Wow I had just reread Sorcerer's Stone today so I actually knew what a bezoar was.
These are always a treat! 😊
17:33 Hank's decades-old resentment toward his mom
Now i want the "I lost SciShow Quiz Show"......UUu a t-shirt is what i'll make
I really like the idea of a game show and i also have some personal ideas of constructive criticism to put it nicely. I think the points in between the answer reveal could be a little more brief or concise. Overall though I really enjoyed this cute little game show theme and the casual feel it had on the episode.
Last time I was this early, I mixed genes with a NeanderThal
Ben Adams you doomed us all!
I feel like I haven't seen Aranda in awhile :O
“I cannot imagine anyone who has drawn more fish than me”. ...Wayland.
The hiccups question, I wished the backstory would have been a guy was given a prostate exam as he had hiccups...that would be a great storty.
I see four "first"s, how suspicious
lets be honest, of you were first, youd definitely say First, I would
Since i'm only allowed to type nice things on Sci-show vid comments, boy this is a great video.
Colin Hickey's beard and Wheezy Waiter shirt are on point!
"I won SciShow quiz show" is pretty much a tongue twister for me.
WheezyWaiter beard lovers unite!
You know it's not him in the video, right?
Adam Rasmussen ~ Yes I know. I commented because he is wearing a WheezyWaiter shirt and Colin, Michael and Hank are friends of Craig Benzine. Also Colin does resemble Craig slightly, what with the beard and all.
Ah, didn't notice! Cool
the i lost pin is equally as rare as the i won pin because they get produced in equal amounts
I want so much the 'I Lost at Scishow Quiz Show' pin...
I love Hank so much

I tried the finger stuff. One try though, but it works. (Yeaaaah I'm not proud of it)
Wasn't there a Vlogbrothers video where Hank built up a giant plug of earwax?
I thought everyone knew the origin of marshmallows? That was surprising.
Nope!
Colin has a very cool voice
@scishow Where I live, you can buy the "marshmallow" cough drops. They are called "Eibischteig" maybe you can find them online if you are interested in how they taste!
I want the behind the scenes from the quiz show XD it looks fun XD
Nice video!
I like the Sci Show Quiz Show very much. But I have a suggestion to make it more interesting:

I just love the fact someone paid money to know if Pepsi could "cure" your stomach the way Coke does. What a time to be alive
u forgot to mention that Mallow plant can be used as a drug... a hallucinating stimulant. via the roots. make lots of tea.. u can eat the leaves raw, lots of nourishment and vitamin E & C, like a loooot. Dandelion is similar. also a food and drug.
Hank is my spirit man.
I knew the answer to the myth of arsenic poisoning cure since I watched an episode of gravity falls where the goat eats cans
6:52 does hank get the hickups when michael mentions it?
I got that marshmallow question from reading Tamora Pierce :))))
scishow quizshows r awsum make more like these
As late as the 1970's you could get small bottles of Coca Cola syurp from pharmacies. My mom kept it on hand to treat nausea. Anybody know if drug stores still carry it?
OMG thank you hank for addressing the real smart question hahaha
"...and mixing it with nuts and honey."
Did you say _honey..._ and... _nuts?_ 🤔
9:59 That was fast, lightning fast!
Wait... so Hank's mother thought he was on drugs?
Hiccups are not a joke. I had them for 48 hours straight. Violent unable to sleep or eat hiccups. I would have stuffed a bowling ball up there if I had thought it would help. lol
Mucilage is a dietary fibre so it could also be useful for constipation, should have given it to Hank.
Neil Sheriff too much fiber can cause constipation too
WAIT A MINUTE....I am most interested in the idea that I could collect samples of my ear wax at regular intervals and store them for archeological study. How would you like to open a time capsule full of capsules full of earwax?
Hip Chrisle lube
Wow.... Why didn't I find this before ?! 🤔my holiday is almost 😓 😓😓
Heck...There's corners of my body I've probably never seen yet...lol .
@SciShow i guess u Made a mistake at 7:05 ... the diaphragm is controlled by the phrenic nerve ... the vagus nerve does a lot of stuff but not the diaphragm (in fact it doesn't even have the qualities to make normal muscles move)
Boil water and let it cool just enough to drink and gulp a cup down. Cures the hiccups every time I swear.
madison king death also cures hiccups. Wouldn't recommend it tho.
Zander Rossman I'm not talkng dangerously or even scalding hot, just like really hot tea
florian and granger...the AU potter where Hermione gets with the ice cream man
Yes Stefan!
Med student here: The diaphragm is actually controlled by the phrenic nerve and not the vagus.
Hank finally won
