Amazing music, heavily underrated composer from Czechia!

Incredibly powerful performance. The impeccable percussion section is the icing on the cake, better than in any other recording I know, even Karel Ančerl and Marko Ivanović.

This work blows my mind. There is the profound unity of the musical elements, the beauty of the form, the ongoing rhythmic acceleration always tied to the slow harmonic rhythm. And then there is the orchestral writing; brilliant and inspired from beginning to end. The first clarinet part, the bass clarinet part, the first flute part, the violin solos, and a timpani part as exciting as anything in the repertory. Massive props to Jakub Hrůša for unearthing this masterwork and bringing it to our attention. One listens to this piece with a certain sadness, knowing how the Communists treated Kabeláč. But maybe his time has come.

A great performance of a great work! One of the orchestral masterpieces of mid 20th-century Europe.

A masterpiece of the highest order. It feels like an organic development through the taut struggle. I'm crazy about works of this form.

I have fond memories of one of the announcers at WONO FM (Phil Miller) in Syracuse in the 70s recommending this piece to me and finding it many, many, years later as part of the Karel Ancerl Series on Supraphon. How great it is to find this video of a live concert performance! A terrific work, and a real discovery if you haven't heard it yet. Give it time, once it develops you will be hooked on its mystery of time....

Outstanding composition! Full of energy!! Well done (melody, orchestration, gradation etc.)! Climax in golden section...

    • @larsjohansson7954

No, the golden section is 0.618. Here the climax comes at appr. 0.8 -- much later than golden section. So it has a much longer crescendo than diminuendo.

Many, many thanks to the original poster of this video. I am an admirer of the composer and a fan of this piece and I am happy to add it to the other two recordings I know (Ancerl/Czech Phil and Starek/Stuttgart RSO).

This work was first recorded on LP in 1963, coupled with Martinu's Parables. In a series of New Music LPs. This was outstanding in so many ways. Mono recordings: Czech PO / Karel Ancerl.
But at last we are in a new era where everybody can appreciate this fine work. It was overwhelming hearing the LP for the 1st time, I soon had heard it 50+ times. It was always a masterpiece,
and survives as a firm favorite. I'm impressed by its support here.

Even though I have not yet find a way of understanding to other works of Kabeláč, The Mystery of Time is a matchless opus which is no doubt one of the strongest pieces written in 20th century.

Určitě minimálně v Česku, ale kdo vůbec ví, že existuje někdo jako Kabeláč. Tahle skladba by měla být hraná pravidelně na velkých českých hudebních festivalech. Je to ostuda a pro mě nepochopitelné.

This should get a lot wider audience! I like how enclosed this composition is, very narrative in a sence. And I love Jakub Hrusa conducting style!

I've only just heard of this composer. This is an impressive piece though it must have been difficult for the orchestra to play in places.

Gorecki 3rd meets Karel Husa's "Music for Praugue" meets Sibelius tone poem meets a Shostakovich first movement. . . . if that sounds like I'm deriding this, I'm not. I can't say I'm real crazy about it either. It is good - better than most 'modern' works. This is certainly a superb performance.
