Interesting review! I'm not familiar with either of them (I use a Trangia). Question: if "more $" is a Con for the titanium stove (as it is for almost anything made of titanium), shouldn't "less $" be a Pro for the aluminum stove? Another question: would boiling the water affect the total burn time for either stove? In other words, if the stove flames aren't just burning in open air, but are actually heating the vessel to boil the water, would that affect the stove's total burn time? A simple way to check that would be to bring the 1 cup of water to a boil, then remove the cup/pot from the stove and see how much longer it burns, keeping track of both boil and overall times. Or maybe leave the cup/pot on the stove, even after the water is boiling, to keep the stove heating the cup/pot, to see how much time you can actually use the stove for on that amount of fuel.
Good point for the burn time... The price ain't bad for both to be honest. I kinda prefer the titanium "cause it's more sturdy for the weight and works better for my "taste" but they both will do the job for sure. Trangia are awesome too. I will have to make more test :) thanks and take care
Take the ~$15 Trangia Spirit Burner B25 as reference (made in brass), a $35 Titanium stove will not boil the same amount of water in half of time than the vintage Trangia. Neither the "jewels" like the CNC made ~$80 RSR (RiverSide Ramble) stove, neither the almost $100 Final Flame stove with 3Dprinted Titanium capillarity core. And if you steep over, all these stove will end damaged. ;) Want boil water more fast possible? Just get a JetBoil pressurized gas stove.
Stoves differ not only in material but also in design. The titanium stove has two rows of holes while the aluminum one has only one, so the titanium stove will always burn more fuel.
I looked at the Tomshoo, but it has no lid! I've just ordered the Lixada stove as it has a screw on lid like my Trangia. I like the Tomshoo stuff, I have a pot stand which has a multitude of uses. Also have one of their pots, knife, fork and spoon...nice stuff for good money!
I agree... but I always use the quantity I need... I don't trust the lids... Failed on me twice before so I prefer to burn what I need and that's it. But I understand your point. They do make great stuff. Take care
I've been using 3... the super light titanium "roll up type"... the clipping one from lixada and the basic homemade aluminum one.... they all work fine. It's a question of how hight you need for your pot and weight.
The flame distance from burner to pot will affect the boiling time among other things. So it is natural that the Trangia copy burner is slower with cross stand. Tomshoo burns mainly with outer ring hole gasification. What is interesting, is that Tomshoo burns out faster than Lixada, in free burning. Could be burner geometry, wall thicknesses, possibly material too, in my thoughts. ------- I like my Tomshoo burner, but the flame distance with cross stand is about 1.2 inch. Very big for normal size camping pots. My 11.5 cm diameter pot can't in no way contain the flames under pot. So it is a fast boiling fuel hog with that. When I boil slower by using the simmer mode with no cross stand, it is economical. The titanium long handle spoon I have found to be a good tool for removing the cross stand before simmering starts, for long boilings.
@@paddle_hike Other tips. You will need some insulation from cold ground this time of year or later. So a cardboard circle wrapped with aluminium is a good thing to keep in your pot to put under any lightweight burner/stove. Alcohol won't start burn easy when it is cold. Some tell to leave a match stick in the burner when lighting. In case of that Janus faced Tomshoo, another solution is to put a tea light candle in one quadrant of the cross stand and burner with spirit above it as much as it is stable.It will work as I have the same stand as you. That simmer mode only works if there is no wind. Like at home (with denatured ethanol not methanol) or in a cottage cabin. Otherwise a windscreen is a must. That measuring cup you have in your video, I have a 30ml (1fluid oz) one too, is a good thing. And a Trangia fuel bottle to pour fluid from to it. There are some measuring lines in the burner. I just don't care about them. And this thing. If you really want consider alcohol fuel instead gas canister. You will need a larger diameter pot. My Toaks 1100ml pot can take from Trangia copy burner the 0.86 inch distance to be quite economical. It will not be fast. Just won't loose the heat. I found the stand that paleohikermd called as redcamp being to me optimal. Pots need have all the flames contained under the pot. I don't care any about some caldera cones or whatever stupidity. They are just toys to get money from users. If the pot is small in diameter, better stick to gas canisters if wanting fast results. Windscreen is a must :) Titanium pots are good at boiling water/fluids, because of the thin walls and poor conductivity. An aluminium pot will gather and loose much more of the burner energy in space. So a simmering is harder with an alu pot and they need faster boiling. This is just my thought thought.

While I have Tomshoo titanium Evernew and Trangia brass burner copy that weighs maybe about 100g and Tomshoo just maybe 45g. So the brass burner has lots of more heat energy to cool down, but because its is brass that conducts heat well, it cools down faster in my experience than Tomshoo. Aluminium is also a good heat conductor. Titanium is not. You may have the wrong idea from your titanium pot? My Toaks 1100 ml pot, once I pour all the boiled water out, can be rested on my hand soon after. It is thin titanium, something like 0.3 - 0.4mm. Tomshoo burner is like a tank, and the cross stand is thicker than 1 mm.
Well... for having used both many times... i can grab my titanium stove faster than my alu.... so don't know what else to say. I've used them tons and I'm always able to pick up my titanium one before my alu...brass, no clue....could be faster indeed

Over the carbon felt put a small disk of metal screen (e.g. screen protection against bugs for windows). See in the YT "Lifestyle CC Land" the test showing the improvement. The channel is in Chinese, so search for Trangia, the images speak for itself.

Wait a minute, not to fast. I hate the aluminum stoves, but you need to give credit where credit is due. The Ti-stove has more burner holes than the aluminum stove. For that reason, the Ti will burn more fuel than the aluminum. The Ti-stove is meant to work with/without a trivet not like the aluminum stove which it needs. If you want to compare the 2, you need to remove the trivet from the Ti-stove in order to have a realistic comparison. Now the question is "do you want a stove that burns more fuel or less", or "do you want a stove that is strong over a flimsy". If you choose the Ti, you need to bring more fuel. Btw, I have both a Ti and the Aluminum stoves. I hate them both. I prefer a Trangia or its knockoff, but they crack holes. The PF SS stoves are 10x much better, but they are too big for the twig stoves. Thanks.
Your first burn time test has absolutely nothing to do with reality, unless you are using the burners as "space heaters". Put a pot on them once blumed/primed. Or was it a test to see how long it will take to... purposlessly waste the fuel. Please don't use the Ali lid to snuff out the flame??!! You will melt the sealing ring and not be able to carry fuel in it, as it will leak. But thanks for your efforts.

I never had any leak so far but you must check the joint to be sure. Smooth on mine , no issues.

Titanium has no cover. You have to burn away whatever alcohol you've not used before storing.
