Hey Courtney! If you’re interested in reacting to any other shows, I would recommend:
    - Carolina Crown 2015 “Inferno”
    - Bluecoats 2019 “The Bluecoats”
    - Santa Clara Vanguard 2018 “Babylon”
    - Carolina Crown 2016 “Relentless”
    - Bluecoats 2016 “Down Side Up”
    - Bluecoats 2014 “Tilt”
    - Bluecoats 2018 “Session 44”
    - Blue Devils 2019 “Ghostlight”
I know this may seem like a lot, but these are just some of my favorite shows, so I thought you might like them as well!

99% of DCI performances are in outdoor football stadiums and the DCI season is during the summer months, so yeah, it's pretty damn hot wherever they are gonna be. This actually looks like a practice, as they are in T-shirts and shorts instead of their uniforms...probably leading up to a big performance or competition.

I love how much drum corps evolves. It started as a fun, militaristic style activity with a hint of theater but the theatric elements have taken center stage with modern drum corps. So looking through shows for the past few generations, you really get to see the change in culture within the activity. Each generation gets to make a long lasting mark on the history of DCI. I’ve seen DCI competitions live every year since 2011, and they fail to take my breath away.

Yay! More Drum Corps reaction videos!
Glad you got to see Carolina Crown. Their horn line can be so loud it becomes a physical force and plasters you against a wall.
You are right to marvel at the ability of these kids to march at speed and still play smoothly and in tune.
I just wish you could see the corps perform from a high vantage point so you can see the formations change on the field. Every performers' steps have to be precise or else it will ruin the general effect and affect the scores they receive in competition.
And as I've told you before, nothing beats a live show! Have fun watching. I know I am.
PS: You've done reaction videos to Tom Brady & Rob Gronkowski (Awesome!), now check out Julian Edelman.

Drum Corps International (DCI) is an activity similar to marching band, It contains Brass, Percussion, Color Guard (Dancers, spinning, Flag, Rifle, or Sabre) and occasionally other instruments (mostly used for solos) Members of the Corps (ages 14-21/22) go on tour for about three months, moving from place to place via busses and stopping for shows and rehearsals all across the country. All the corps train for world championships in Indiana to be one of the top 12.
There is also Open Class DCI which usually has more high schoolers, as well as DCA (Drum Corps Associates) which is much less intense than DCI.

@Courtney Coulston Carolina Crown is one of the best of the best in Drum Corps International (DCI) competition marching bands. Your comment about the Disney magical feeling is spot on. My son Andrew had a chance to be in their "inner circle" when he was a senior in high school here in New Bern, NC. He was an assistant drum major and went to a band seminar at Western Carolina University in the NC mountains where Crown practices. He was blown away by his experience with them. He showed me his video of the performance and I got goosebumps, chills, and emotionally moved by the way they sounded. The mountains were resonating with the echoes of the brass instruments (they don't accept woodwinds because they're Not Loud Enough!). It was his "I can die happy now" moment. I'm so glad you got a chance to see their show. You absolutely should see it in person if you're ever able to. There's no comparison between the live performance and a video of a live performance. Btw, New Bern is only a 30-45 minute drive from Jacksonville and Camp Lejeune. I believe you mentioned in a previous vlog that that is where your fiance was stationed?

You can pick just about any Carolina Crown show, it's going to sound amazing, their brass is just insane, both in the sheer skill of their playing, and their immense SOUND, they're SO loud when they drop the hammer. I got to watch them during a rehearsal for the Relentless show, then got to see the actual show at the competition a couple hours later. It's an experience like NO other to see one of these world class drum corps... I also really love the last 2-3 years of Boston Crusaders shows, just amazing stuff. There's an "open class" competition (smaller corps than what you watched here) that happens about half an hour drive from my house every year, but because of the corona virus pandemic, all Drum Corps competitions for 2020 were cancelled, and I'm SO missing it right now. If you go to a competition and show up early, you can walk around the parking lots for the venue and watch the corps warm up right up close, it's SO much fun, and SO loud, haha!

I haven't seen a comment saying this, so here's a quick fact about this video:
Crown is known to have the best hornline in DCI, so they have to save their chops so they aren't too physically exhausted by the time a performance comes around. This causes them to leave out the more powerful hits in the show during practices such as this one. That's why there aren't horns playing at the very end. There are actually a few spots in this video where the horns don't play hits.

And not only are they having fun out there, they are also sweating BOMBS because of the very hot temperatures that they practice and perform in.
I have been a serious drum corps fan since 1999 and each year all of the corps staff and performers turn it out for the fans!! The performers give 1000% of themselves just for the experience and applause. It's truly a sport of the musical arts because not only is musical talent required, the athleticism to pull off the performances is as demanding as any sport played on a grass field. Thank you to ALL who make this wonderful magic happen every year. It breaks my heart that there will be no marching season this year 💔 I wish you could all be out there because I think your music can help heal this country from the pain and destruction that is going on right now. Every corps is a microcosm of society because there is great diversity in the membership. We CAN all get along --- let MUSIC bring us together!! 🇺🇸

Hey, just a quick primer on the format of most performances, they're usually in 3 parts: the intro, the ballad, and the closer. The intro is a little more simple and introduces the themes of the show, warms up the crowd. The ballad is the middle section, quieter and slower with those pretty harmonies. The closer is high energy and bombastic, with lots of crazy rhythms, movements, and powerful notes.

  • @mhc2b

Not sure if I posted on the Blue Devil video, but here's some pertinent information about these bands. They are all part of the Drum Corp International, which is a summer program for high school band musicians. Students who perform must be no older than 21 (I believe). Each musician has to audition for acceptance into one of many DCI bands across the nation. Note that the actual "band" musicians are only brass and percussion. No woodwinds allowed. They begin practice as soon as the school year is over, and summer vacation begins. They practice from dawn to dusk everyday, and compete in regional competitions with each other throughout early and mid summer. In August there is the final competition where, again I believe, the top 10 scoring bands compete for the big trophy. These kids donate their entire summer vacation to these bands. They are the finest, and most dedicated, group of young musicians in the world. And, as you can see, they also have dancers, flag twirlers, rifle squads, etc.
I was a high school band director many years ago, and was privileged to have a couple of my students be accepted to DCI bands. One to the Madison Scouts, and another to the Santa Clara Vanguards.
IMHO, both these videos (Carolina Crown and the Blue Devils) were nothing short of lousy videography!! Watch some DCI finals on You Tube where they have a professional videographer up in the press box, allowing you to get an overall view of the entire show, just as if you were in the stands.

Ha ha I love how you say that they all look like they are all having fun. It's because they love marching so much that they pay to be there and go through a rigorous audition process, not to mention the countless hours of practice in each part of their show and then the countless hours of practicing the entire show all together. Look at it like this...for these kids (and I say kids because they all age out at 21) drum and bugle corps is their entire life for the entire summer. They spend all day everyday together. They eat, sleep, and breathe this stuff. I know I loved being in marching band in high school and regret not getting to be a part of impulse when I graduated high school. But that was because I couldn't afford it. Many dare I say almost all band kids in America will tell you that their favorite part of the school year in high school is marching season.

This was actually a practice session to perfect their routine. There is very stiff competition for talent in the Drum and Bugle Corp groups. They participate in competitions against each other on a yearly basis to crown a champion. They are basically judged on every aspect of the show including their playing, marching, the show itself, how they look, basically everything.

Yes it gets really hot!! Depending on what month that was during the recording the humidity was probably close to 100% and it also looked like it was near the 80s or 90s that day.

Some of the parts of the brass will sound cut short because Vic Firth is a percussion organization and this is for them. so this video is kinda focused around the drums and frontline.

This could send you down such a huge rabbit hole of Drum Corps, and I have so many potential recommendations, however, I just need to say to be careful about what you pick and react to because FloMarching(the company that owns the copyright over the majority of Drum Corps recordings, primarily of full shows) is extremely anal about striking people down. Many people end up titling the videos they personally took differently to avoid copyright, i.e instead of "Santa Clara Vanguard 2018" you'll see "Definitely Not Banta Blara Banguard 2018".
All that said, however, these are my recommendations of recent shows for you to listen/watch, whether it be on your personal time or a recorded reaction:
    Santa Clara Vanguard '18, '19
    Bluecoats '11, '14, '16, '17, '18, '19
    Carolina Crown '11, '12, '14, '15, '16, '17, '19
    Boston Crusaders '17, '18, '19
This is already hours worth of shows, so I'll leave it there, but Drum Corps is something to easily get addicted to. I love your content and feedback on what you listen to, so I think you'll really enjoy this rabbit hole if you choose to go down it

WELCOME to the the beautiful and high energy world that is drum corps. The kids in this activity are pretty much trained and conditioned by the best of the best. The show concept is usually planned beginning in the colder months October- January where the staff brain storm ideas. From there they put together a concept and work on arranging music and choreography to begin teaching at camps hosted one weekend a month from November-April. May is when everybody comes together for spring training for about a month until competition season starts in June. From there they are on the road traveling from city to city rehearsing and competing until the world championships in early August. Performers usually range in age from 15-21. That was the shortest overview I could give you but just a lil FYI.

  • @contranimal
    @contranimal 4 ปีที่แล้ว

yeah to be in this activity you do really have to love what your doing out there, given that the average member pays anywhere from $3500 - $5000+ to march with these groups for a whole summer (approximately 3 months from the time you move in with the group around mid May until Finals in mid August) This is pretty much your life every day for 3 months.

  • @forreal2398
    @forreal2398 4 ปีที่แล้ว

The thing is they have correyographers that dream this stuff up and then the band director in combination that gets this all worked out so they can combine the music and the moves. This looks like one of many practice sessions to get out on the stage they will be doing this on so they can get the moves and timing down. At some point this will be a half time show at a football game and they will be in full uniform doing this.

So glad you’re getting to see the world of drum corps and enjoying it!
    Some suggestions:
    Blue Devils 15, 19
Carolina Crown literally from 2007-present. 2016 was it for me.
    Cavaliers 2002, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2014 (I marched in this!), 2019
Santa Clara Vanguard 2015-2019 but specifically 2018 (it won, and the ballad made me literally bawl every time I got to see them), and 2017 (which I wanted to win)
    Cadets 2011
    Bluecoats 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019 (2015 is my favorite)
    Blue Knights 2015, 2019
    Blue Stars 2019
There are more but that’s a billion already.

    • @radlikewhoa
      @radlikewhoa 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Really it’s all based on personal preference. Like if you want a story line you can follow or just to be blown away by talent. There are different corps for different kind of feels. Each has their signature thing.

Hi Courtney. I have a reaction suggestion for you that is a little bit different. I bet you would enjoy reacting to Secretariate's Triple Crown Races. This great horse is probably the best athlete of the 20th century. You may not see it in the first two legs of the triple crown, but the jockey let him run in the final race, and the rest is legendary. This horse set track records in the 1970's that lasted for decades.

Yep, mighty impressive Courtney. Many thanks for posting this video. My family here in Texas have watched High School band competitions for many years, and sometimes kids have passed out from the heat. At least the kids in this video got to dress appropriately. Bands here have to have their final competitions dressed in their full formal uniforms....the kids just melt away.
