This is too groovy and I keep replaying the beginning so I can jam along on bass. It might be more stoner metal than doom, but I can't wait to eventually find my way to the lesson. Quality content as usual!
been playing doom for 10+ years - I find sliding into notes & chords occasionally lends to 'that sound' & the heaviness. Not just chord 'a' then chord 'b' then chord 'c', but chord 'a' then chord 'b' then --->chord 'c'. Or just slight bends, like in the riff right before the first verse from 'Into the Void' by Black Sabbath. Another cool thing is to hit a chord and let it ring out(if it fades into feedback even better! LOL), then go down 1 fret, hit the strings and then immediately slide right back into that first chord and let it ring out... Matt Pike does this alot in his band Sleep. Letting a huge wall of feedback ring out for abit(or longer) and then sloppily unplugging your guitar so it buzzes alot makes a great song ending too! hahahaha
I don't know why I missed your video on doom! I requested it some times in comments of your black metal videos, and I found this, two months after uploading? Anyway, your video is amazing!
Honestly I think B♭ is a bit too low. Personally D standard is the sweet spot IMO. Then drop the low string to Drop C, which works incredibly well since you still have the low C but also it's the higher notes of D standard.
Could you do a video on High Tyde’s Do what you want please. They’re a great young band but haven’t got the exposure yet so there’s no tabs online and your tutorials have taught me 85% of what I know on electric guitar. Thank you
hell yeah bro i remember watching your videos when i first started to play guitar, you were that guy that used only 3 boss pedals!! Cheers man hope you're doing great!!! l,,l
Your tone is incredible. I wish I could afford to get a mesa/ boogie amp, even just the mini rectifier or the rectoverb. Actually the rectoverb 25 is kinda my dream amp, but $1,300...no can do. I'll stick with distortion pedals for now. I do love my metal muff. 😊
The lines between the two can be a bit blurry at times, but this has more of a traditional doom vibe to it like Saint Vitus and Iron Man (the band, not the song). Stoner metal/rock outfits like Orange Goblin tend to be a bit more up tempo and less heavy. Doom metal doesn't necessarily have to be sludgy and harsh, it just has to be fatalistic and deep. Furthermore, one of the best doom metal songs of all time (Black Sabbath's self-titled song) was in E-standard.
I think I have all the rules down but the wizard beard I have one like yours but it makes the devil jealous can't play all that well but that's why I watch your vids I'm learning
Please make a video of history of doom metal in riffs, since Black Sabbath utill more contemporary bands like Monolord,Warhorse,Sleep and Electric Wizard.
1:47 not if your playing like say Funeral Doom for instance many bands the play that genre have a clean guitar break with some reverb, delay and maybe some chorus to really give great atmosphere.
C# is perfectly fine! Iommi uses that on Master of Reality, and plenty of doom and stoner bands use that tuning. B is also great but you can't got wrong either way
I'm a female... but let's give this wizard beard a try
Good luck! 🤘🤘
that's kinda hot. lol
i was gonna say that lmao same
Love the faidra pfp
Well... Black Sabbath, by Black Sabbath from their record Black Sabbath is in E standard, and THAT'S pretty darned doomy...
They are the original doom. So I say standard is fine with me
@@skatetodeath666 same bro
sabbath was the pre cursor to doom metal sound
I'm going to have a shave and write a Doom song in E standard with a pink guitar
I think that's the heaviest song of all time.
heeeey man, slow down!
My guitar is red. The colour of blood
My SG is black. The colour of soul.
@@kipebikepunk7279 lol was jay about to comment that
Mine is clear, like the air
My blood is red. The color of your guitar..
You should play blood metal then xD
Exception to rule #1 -- if you play in E standard, do not use guitars. Use two or three basses instead.
JM Bell
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath is in E
@@Questioneverythingx Indeed it is.
Or 2 distortion and 3 Fuzz pedals.
Lot of fuzz and an octave pedal if youre lazy lol
Would love to see more Doom/Stoner/Sludge lessons and covers. Nice lesson mate!
1:30 Saint Vitus and Hellhammer created super doomy songs in E standard
17 min songs 🤣
More the premature shooter
guy huh?
That "Mini" mesa boggie sounds badass, nice video too 👍
Kewpu Likan Thanks mate
That deadpan delivery at the beginning has made me a fan along with quality lessons.
Thanks mate
@@SimonSmithGuitar no problem at all. It's like watching parks and rec but with metal.
first thing I need to do: buy a beard! :D
Lockdown was great to grow a moustache 🤣
i only write my doom riffs in E standard or half step down way better than low tunings
This is too groovy and I keep replaying the beginning so I can jam along on bass. It might be more stoner metal than doom, but I can't wait to eventually find my way to the lesson.
Quality content as usual!
That's cool, but could you do a video about the melodic death metal?
thats easy, just play regular deathmetal and then put melody in it XP

Good point on sliding and bends. Makes it less thrash and chunky, but smooth and huge.
Totally agree
YESSSS I do all of this when I play this style
PENTAGRAM.'nuff said.
Great video Simon! Could you please do a video about the Celtic Frost/Triptykon tone? (Just like the swedish death metal one)
The first rule of doom metal is YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT DOOM METAL!!
Too right
Setting the speed of the video playback to 0.25 is just about right and it also makes you sound like you've had a massive hit from the bong. ;-)
how about a top ten doom riffs vid
If it's not 30 bpm or under, it's not doom metal
I don't know why I missed your video on doom! I requested it some times in comments of your black metal videos, and I found this, two months after uploading? Anyway, your video is amazing!
Thank you mate
Awesome lesson! Hope for Death Doom continuation :)

0/10 - not enough bends
10/10 no bends

The New Paradise Lost Album 👌

Ok so I need a map of the 2nd layer u played.amazing practice! Thank you for blessing us with your videos
hell yeah bro i remember watching your videos when i first started to play guitar, you were that guy that used only 3 boss pedals!! Cheers man hope you're doing great!!! l,,l
Do h have a simple beginner tab for some if this? I learn better seeing it on paper
I have the Jim root tele.....it’s white.....can I still play?
Yes, because it has a black scratchplate!
Amazing! You should do a lesson on Triumfall's "Skies are the chains" love this channel! Always showing my favorites /,,/
That amp sounds fucking NASTY!
How do you tune to b flat?? I don’t know how to do drop d what are the notes for each string in b flat?
Your tone is incredible. I wish I could afford to get a mesa/ boogie amp, even just the mini rectifier or the rectoverb. Actually the rectoverb 25 is kinda my dream amp, but $1,300...no can do. I'll stick with distortion pedals for now. I do love my metal muff. 😊
Cabinet is way more important. I have an old crate combo solid state with a Celestion v30 and it sounds amazing
Thats not doom metal thats stoner rock
Sounds doom enough to me. And I listen to everything from early Sabbath to Thergothon and everything in between.
So what distinguishes each style to make them sound different?
venom & leather doom is mostly less bluesy and heavier

This is definitely Doom
So good, can I just add this to my set list?!😜
It's more Stoner
I'd expect a much larger amp for doom.
Simon Simon you had me laughing my ass off with rule 4 LMFAO!!!! thanks Mate
Haha!! :)
I love playing Doom
The guy is a myth not a smith, hope you like.
Never E Standard?!?!??
I think I have all the rules down but the wizard beard I have one like yours but it makes the devil jealous can't play all that well but that's why I watch your vids I'm learning
Funny and good lesson 😄
that doesnt sound like doom metal, you better ask someone
I don't need to ask someone, you just imparted your wisdom upon me!
Thanks Ivan Moody👍
Doom?
I just discover the type of metal i like the most. DOOM THE FUCKING METAL!
what tuning?
Please make a video of history of doom metal in riffs, since Black Sabbath utill more contemporary bands like Monolord,Warhorse,Sleep and Electric Wizard.
You're great man haha
I play a Black Mockingbird in D#, am I doom enough mate?
I’m playing it tuned drop B 9 string 🤣🤣🤣 Thats lower
1:47 not if your playing like say Funeral Doom for instance many bands the play that genre have a clean guitar break with some reverb, delay and maybe some chorus to really give great atmosphere.
Gotta work on that beard, mate! That's a rookie beard!
This is great and all, but how do I write a riff that doesn’t revolve around 7 on the A or 12 on the E
Cool keep up the good work i am going to try to come up with some doom riff ideas🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
👊😎 thanks simon
i've been on a doom kick lately to
CORY HUNTER / GEMINI GUITARS IS NO. 1 RIFF MASTER 👍👍👍👍👍
Nice solo @6:00. Are fourths important in doom metal or nah?
Haha this video is so fucking awesome! 😂
Dig the Mini Rec, but I still prefer that Ironheart.
Great tutorial Simon! I shall now embark on my journey of sorrow. For I am the DoomTard
Black Dog is a doom riff now? 😂
Cool riffs. I think the main thing is to feel it. Without that, there is nothing.
Can I steal these riffs lol. B flat sounds so nasty!!
What tuning are you in you only explain your top string
love your sense of humor simon
On “7” string guitar!!! Damn it what a tease
Sold me with the bit about the beard
many many manyyy thanks simon , you,re awesome :-x
I can sign to the first part so good
8:15 Is that a Om reference?
love the humour bro.
that amp head looks sooooo CUTE!
That’s a cool riff
I have no beard
That was real nice
Was it saint vitus
*stoner rock.
Is C# standard deep enough or should I do B standard
C# is perfectly fine! Iommi uses that on Master of Reality, and plenty of doom and stoner bands use that tuning. B is also great but you can't got wrong either way
ME LIKEY
thanks
Proset King!
"never play in standard tuning"...listen to the first two sabbath albums, the fathers of doom, shut up dude
You are aware that he is being satirical
all these jokes are wasting my time
Play back a 75 sounds brutal ASF
