      Kaldelis is a woke. He's unprofessionally peddling his leftist politics under the veneer of academic work. He doens't have a clue as to the ethnic heritag of eastern Romans. What he's doing is redefining ethnicity to be free of biological meaning much like leftists have been doing with gender. If one wants to know the ethnicity of middle age Romans one gets an actual science not a humanities flake like Kaldelis. DNA testing between modern and ancient Greeks has blown Kaldellis crackpot narratives out of the water. Unfortunatley many confuse narratives of Sokal-esque leftist humanities flakes like Kaldellis as "science".

    Big thanks for this one, Kelly. Dr. Kaldellis is my second favorite Romanland historian, next to Dr. Leonora Neville. The fact the I am a Senior Auditor here at the University of Wisconsin, Madison has absolutely nothing to do with that preference, of course. My copy of The New Roman Empire arrived last Saturday. My last class of the semester is next Monday. So, I will have the entire Winter Break to enjoy it.
    Note to my fellow WHE colleagues: I will be accepting Sherpa applications until noon on Monday, December 11, 2023. This is an absolutely beautiful book: 1,133 pages of high-quality paper and binding. The 15 maps alone are worth the price of admittance. Cannot wait! - Pete

    Charles Diehl was one of the greatest Byzantinists of all time. For example, his work, "Manuel d'Art Byzantin", despite being from 1925, is very comprehensive, and the tradition he left behind is enormous. For instance, with his disciple Bréhier, whose trilogy "La civilisation byzantine - Les institutions de l'empire byzantin and Vie et mort de Byzance - still today is a very relevant work, his description of the Byzantine navy is briliiant. It is a shame that it is forgotten that those who write history today owe so much to many generations, starting with Thucydides"

      History buffs should know the HRE claimed to be the one and only Roman empire and the eastern one Greek. They should also know Kaldellis is a woke. He's redefining ethnicity much like he redefines gender. To be free of biological reality. Sokal warned about pseudo-academics in the humanities peddling their leftit politics under the veneer of science. This describe flake Kaldelis to a tee.

    One of the most thrilling historical novels set in the Byzantine Greek Empire during the last Siege of Constantinople, is “The Dark Angel” (original title Johannes Angelos), by prominent Finnish writer, Mika Waltari.
    Truly epic.

    • @mydogsbutler
      @mydogsbutler 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The use of the term Byzantium arose because the western Roman empire considered itself the real Roman empire. Long forgotten by many today is during the middle ages the HRE considered itself the only Roman empire and called the east Imperium Grecoium.. empire of the Greeks. Even the name Byzantium which was popularized by the HRE starting around the 16th century was originally a reference to ancient Greek name for Constantinople. Also of note, today many absurdly claim Slavs are "ethnic Macedonians". In other words they lie in the present while claiming to speak for the past. Bigotry towards Greeks being pawned off as academic work.. Some seem to be trying to subtlety ethnic cleanse Greeks by rewriting history. Such sorts adore the narratives of Kaldellis whose essentially a Greek version of Shlomo Sands.

    Please connect this to Michael Hudson's "And Forgive Them Their Debts" and "The Collapse of Antiquity". He points to Byzantium as breaking the tradition of Rome and taking on rather the more ancient Mesopotamian tradition of the ruler protecting the people and cancelling debt-- in order to maintain rule and keep private wealth (often through government officials) from taking political power through people's debt.

      I suggest reading primary sources rather than just modern interpretations that use ad-hoc analogies to make absurd claims about ethnicity and culture in the eastern Roman empire. . , Theyll usually leave out "minor" details like during the middle ages the Holy Roman empire claimed to the one any only Roman empire and the eastern one really Greeks.

    To what 1940's book does he refer? Ostrogorski? Diehl?

  • @tskjr1

    I was disappointed that he made no reference to his previous book, “Streams of Gold, Rivers of Blood: The Rise and Fall of Byzantium 955 A.D. to the First Crusade,” which was only published in 2017. I understand that “The New Roman Empire: A History of Byzantium” covers more of the early empire, but as someone who has read “Streams of Gold” - and enjoyed it - I wonder why he didn’t do a compare and contrast other than that he’s trying to sell a new book.
