It's hard to argue against the mentality of "I have one life and I wish to do what makes me happy", however the context is different for a single person compared to a parent/wife. Because unlike a single, your actions directly affect the people closest to you--and may or may not affect their level of happiness in turn. So as a parent, you have to balance your desires/needs with those closest or dependant on you, including their welfare. I see and agree with your point, but she's not that logical here. One of the issues people raise is that she got into it before talking to her husband - she's impulsive (and/or manipulative). She's rationalizing it (at least the decision) for us. The fact that she said she'd watch with them tells more about her emotions and psychology than her rationality. Also as you said, it's cold, but doesn't mean there's no emotions behind it, it's just the usual Japanese expression. After all we don't know what happens behind closed door, let alone someone's real feeling. It's impossible for human to be absolutely free from emotions since it's ingrained in our primitive brain.

Assuming this is actually all real, boys and girls this is what is known as a "broken individual" and frankly, her husband is too. Also very typical for these kinds of interviews the story starts well into the middle of the story. For us to really understand this woman and how she could rationalize such bad decisions you have to go back to her childhood and her parents. Considering she ended up as a hostess at first, you definitely want to take a look at her childhood. Another interesting this is her pattern of what could be seen as "easy money" jobs. Being a hostess in Japan, compared to other jobs for young Japanese women (or men in the case of hosts but ESPECIALLY women) they make A LOT of money for much less "work". Then there's the poker and then the porn. It's all "easy money". Her and her son being "like close friends" is a huge red flag. Children don't need close friends, they need parents. Also, I'm pretty sure showing your son your adult videos would probably be considered some form of child abuse because I can't imagine even most porn stars would even think to do something that crazy.

An odd question but is this kind of sexualization (being interested in sex) of young women in middle school common in Japan? It seems like every AV actress that you have interviewed has mentioned some sexual activity or interest before they got into high school. Granted, that is not really a question that is brought up outside the subject of AV, but is that sexual activity typical or something significantly more common with people who pursue adult entertainment (Porn stars, dancers, hostesses, etc.)?
Young women in all cultures have different amounts of interests in sex, and it comes at different ages, I really doubt it's any more common in Japan than elsewhere. Those who don't have high sex drive rarely go into porn. Some go to prostitution and as we have seen in Nobita's videos, there are many reasons for prostitution, the sad ones are poverty and not feeling appreciated elsewhere.

The mistake I see in these comments can be summarized as this. The only thing making a good family relationship is sexual monogamy between the parents. My parents fit that standard and my mom was decent and my father was a self-absorbed tyrant. A good family relationship is a lot more than monogamy. Does she listen to her son's troubles and offer advice and help? Is she doing her share of the housework? And so much more. Psychologically & neurobiologically, sex is a critical important bonding activity between partners. Much more than any shared activity or hobby could be. If they lack both, they can easily feel like close acquaintances sharing space rather than family and even less so if this critical bonding activity is shared with others outside the family, which seems to be what she's describes. This would definitely manifest in their behaviour being less intimate and less involved, which again seems to be what she's described. The relationship of the parents is the first a child witnesses and learns from and in single parent families where the parent has no partners it leaves the child unclear on how to properly form & sustain relationships. The child is bound to mimick the relationship of their parents and that again seems to be the case here. The child regardless of recognising them as parents, also treats them more like friends. While he may be open with his parents he may not be connected to them in a healthy manor. Perhaps not the kind of connection a *child* needs. He's likely to grow distant from his parents or to think of them more like benefactors. It may lead to him being unresponsive to guidance, discipline and authority, and having a less orderly & healthy template for living. It's also worth mentioning that as a child ages and becomes an adult they ought to become more competent and seem *like* peers in the relationship with their parents. But being further removed from the family structure in his developmental years leaves him more prone to maladaptation (developing bad habits and coping mechanisms). Disclaimer: not qualified in neurobiology or psychology in adults or children. What I've written is a mix of my opinion and information I've discovered in my own quest to better myself and rectify damage and trauma in my own life. As well as for the sake of starting a family and raising children in the future.

Most married Japanese couples I have known are in sexless marriages but always say their partner is their best friend, like brother and sister. The fact she didn't tell him is so messed up and manipulative. She essentially forced him into accepting by getting into it without telling him before it was too late. If she had told him and he was ok with it, then that's a different situation and would be fine. But she lied and is laughing about it. Even if he was ok with the decision anyway, it's still messed up to have just assumed that that would have been his reaction. The amount of apathy and self centered interests is troubling.
We as humans, are what we are because of our emotions, our unfiltered reactions. it is what sets us apart and make us unique. Logic and intelligence is what we are also born with that can control those emotion or even overtake them. We are all (the majority at least) capable of reasoning and theoretical conclusions and choose, like her or anybody.

I see and agree with your point, but she's not that logical here. One of the issues people raise is that she got into it before talking to her husband - she's impulsive (and/or manipulative). She's rationalizing it (at least the decision) for us. The fact that she said she'd watch with them tells more about her emotions and psychology than her rationality. Also as you said, it's cold, but doesn't mean there's no emotions behind it, it's just the usual Japanese expression. After all we don't know what happens behind closed door, let alone someone's real feeling. It's impossible for human to be absolutely free from emotions since it's ingrained in our primitive brain.

Being a hostess in Japan, compared to other jobs for young Japanese women (or men in the case of hosts but ESPECIALLY women) they make A LOT of money for much less "work". Then there's the poker and then the porn. It's all "easy money".
Her and her son being "like close friends" is a huge red flag. Children don't need close friends, they need parents.

Psychologically & neurobiologically, sex is a critical important bonding activity between partners. Much more than any shared activity or hobby could be. If they lack both, they can easily feel like close acquaintances sharing space rather than family and even less so if this critical bonding activity is shared with others outside the family, which seems to be what she's describes.
This would definitely manifest in their behaviour being less intimate and less involved, which again seems to be what she's described. The relationship of the parents is the first a child witnesses and learns from and in single parent families where the parent has no partners it leaves the child unclear on how to properly form & sustain relationships. The child is bound to mimick the relationship of their parents and that again seems to be the case here.
The child regardless of recognising them as parents, also treats them more like friends. While he may be open with his parents he may not be connected to them in a healthy manor. Perhaps not the kind of connection a *child* needs. He's likely to grow distant from his parents or to think of them more like benefactors. It may lead to him being unresponsive to guidance, discipline and authority, and having a less orderly & healthy template for living.
It's also worth mentioning that as a child ages and becomes an adult they ought to become more competent and seem *like* peers in the relationship with their parents. But being further removed from the family structure in his developmental years leaves him more prone to maladaptation (developing bad habits and coping mechanisms).

Doomed family from the start
As someone who has lived a long time in Japan and was married to a Japanese, I found this video interesting but completely unsurprising. Most married Japanese couples I have known are in sexless marriages but always say their partner is their best friend, like brother and sister. Most of them have stable marriages and never contemplate divorce. They often have sex outside marriage but it is accepted by both parties.
