'BETWEEN THE LINES' FULL FILM | Fly Fishing for HUGE Striped Bass

  • Thomas Barzilay Freund, Michael Kamsky, and Faulkner Wilson are the people behind the film Between the Lines. Over the years, these three childhood friends from New York City have fished together and documented their adventures on film. Although they’ve had the opportunity to explore many different fisheries together, they feel a deep connection to the striped bass of the Long Island Sound which they have relentlessly pursued over the years. They began fishing for stripers together in high school.
    For the final months of their senior year at the Dalton School, the students were given the chance to work on an independent project of their choosing. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to do something on a topic they cared deeply about. The three decided to make a film about fly fishing for striped bass, with a focus on portraying stripers as the gamefish they believe them to be, and advocating for catch-and-release practices among recreational anglers.
    Between the Lines is about their quest for large, fly-catchable striped bass in their home waters. The entire film was shot during the spring and summer of 2016 in Connecticut’s coastal rivers and along the rocky shorelines of the Long Island Sound.
    We hope you enjoy the film; please let us know your thoughts below!

    Very cool project! My oldest son 11 years old is named Thomas Fremd his largest is about a 12# CNR striper on our local Sacramento and Feather Rivers. His little brother at 9 years old is at 14# CNR. I can’t wait for them to be able to fly fish. I am investigating how to tie 10” streamers and go after the big ones. 👍🎣 Our season for the schoolies is just about ready to start. 👍🎣

    I fish stripers both commercially , and recreational in MA. The fishing is definitely off a bit compared to late 90's- early 2000. The past few years have improved a bit for the large bass, and schoolies can be had on the fly on any given day from just about any shoreline or beach in my area. The biggest change I see in the fishery is more people. One could certainly argue that the increased effort in the recreational fishery is a direct result of the internet. So many videos, forums, fish reports, youtube how-tos.etc. No denying that catch and release kills lots of fish. Places where I used to be able to fish a tide without another person in sight are now shoulder to shoulder fishing holes. I understand that fly fishing is very easy on the fish, but the majority of people are using bait/plugs/trebbles. Massive amounts of bass are taken illegally for eating all season long. I care as much as anyone about the health of the stocks, but I just don't see GAMEFISH only as changing a dam thing. Increased law enforcement(never going to happen), and Stripers Forever fighting for 100% observer coverage on midwater trawlers starting about twenty years ago would have/will make a difference. Give a man a fish and he can eat for a day...Teach everyone to fish and there won't be any left....

    I never ever heard of a crash. For any bass species. Here in Bloomington/ normal of Illinois large mouth and even smallmouth can be hard to catch on the fly. But Ponds around here are tough but the creeks and rivers are better here in my opinion

    I’m not a fly fisherman but I always catch and release I live in north California we don’t have that much big huge monster striped bass but I got my personal best 31in 20lb on a pencil popper got some pictures and release it same with halibut etc..

  • @fisher4yashua52

    do Not WAIT for the fish to hit the teaser popper, or it will turn away and go deep, but cast near or with the teaser as its retrieved , then youL get more hits

  • @WallyOutdoors
    @WallyOutdoors 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cool video besides the push for releasing all the bass. Strippers may be a game fish but they make excellent table fair. Now maybe a push towards the commercial fisheries I would understand but the recreational guys are not the biggest issue... Just saying.

    • @RobertWilson-pr3le
      @RobertWilson-pr3le 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Commercial landings are not the issue, the recreational harvest is considerably greater than any commercial harvest over the last 10 years. Just look at the statistics. They are public... Just saying.

  • @edzaslow
    @edzaslow 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Fishing just to release the catch is a bit ridiculous IMO. The fish is going to die anyway, as it's just a matter of when and how. (Same is true of us humans.) Striped Bass' conservation status is currently "least concern". It's not a threatened or endangered species. The laws of the State of New York do not allow taking stripers unless they are at least 28" but not greater than 35". This is known as a "keeper" or a "slot striper." And the daily bag limit is one fish. I say if you do catch a "keeper", take it home and eat it. It's a good source of high quality protein. (This opinion does not apply to fish caught in the waters adjacent to New York City such as the East River!) Incidentally, the resurgence of the striped bass population has put tremendous pressure of the stock of baitfish that it feeds off. The striped bass is, after all, a predator, like most saltwater fish.
