in the video i mention that the songs el triste reminds me melodically of an older napoletan song called : tu si na cosa grande by domenico modugno . my thoughts on weather el trise was an interpretation, came from the fact that in those days it was a very common practice to license the melody of a song to some other artist or lyricist . in no way i intended to diminish one song or elevate the other was purely an observation. i loved jose jose voice and performance and have indulged in more videos. and thanks to this video i've discovered luis miguel and juan gabriel :)

Excuse me... i just looked for that song , and it doesnt sound like "El Triste" at all, it was like if you said that if you hear "La Incondicional" it sounds like "My Way" from Frank Sinatra...just a big no. Anyway...greetins from Mexico

I don't think this song it's an adaptation of the one you mentioned but of course some parts are similar. As you said: it was very common practice to take one song and adapt it to another language. Here in Mexico and Latinoamérica there are tons of songs that were covers from Italian music and we didn't know it. Nowadays on TH-cam we find the original ones and feel that somehow we were scammed haha.

*Fun fact:the jacket Jose Jose was wearing during the presentation was lent to him by a friend, because Jose Jose didn't had any formal clothes to wear for the presentation. Since the jacket looked a lot like the one worn by the Little Prince, from the story of the Little Prince, he ended up been called "El Principe De La Cancion," or The Prince of The Song."*
*Another sad thing about Jose Jose is that due to alcohol/drug abuse he lost his beautiful voice.*

He was 22 when he competed in this festival and he shockingly won 3rd place (Brazil won 1st, Venezuela won 2nd). A lot of people were angry but the judges said that the competition was judged on the lyrics of the song rather than the performance. This performance put Jose Jose on the map to become one of Mexico’s biggest stars of the ballads. He was pretty much unknown before this performance. The competition was in Mexico - that’s why he had so much support from the audience. Frank Sinatra himself wanted to sing a duet with him but he was unable to due to a manipulative contract he has signed at the time (he was young and new to music contracts), so the duet never happened. It’s interesting the judges thought the lyrics were worthy of third place because they are amazing as well as the performance itself. The song was written by Roberto Cantoral, (one of Mexico’s best composers and dad of “la maldita lisiada villain, Itati Cantoral 😂). Roberto Cantoral wrote this song on a plane about the grief of losing someone after the death of his mother. The song could also be interpreted as losing a significant other in a relationship and talks about the need that someone feels to grieve a loss in order to keep living. Jose Jose always suffered from alcoholism and he admits that he was an alcoholic when this festival occurred. He also said that he began to drink at the age of 8 years old. He eventually lost his voice due to his addiction and years later suffered from Pancreatic Cancer. He died on September 28, 2019.
Also, he was known as El Principe de la Canción “The Prince of the Song”
The lady in the audience is Angélica María known as La Novia de Mexico “Mexico’s Girlfriend”- a well known actress and singer at that point already
The shocked man shortly after was an already stablished singer named Marco Antonio Muniz which makes it even more significant that such successful singers were clearly shocked by a yet to be known young Jose Jose.
Jose Jose came from a family of Musicians, his mom supported him in his trial for success in music and she played the Piano. His dad was a talented opera singer, which explains his extremely well breath control and style.

This was a singing competition, believe it or not he got third place. And the singers that got first and second place were never heard from again. Jose Jose became famous and beloved in Latin America and the USA. His father was an opera singer and this is where Jose Jose gets allot of the technic for the long notes and amazing breathing. Now let’s talk about the song and the genius song writer Roberto Cantoral (whom by the way wrote an son called “al final” Sang by Emanuel a year after Jose Jose in the same competition and won first place). Roberto Cantoral wrote this song “el triste” many years before Jose Jose sang it. So your theory of it being originally from an Italian composer may be wrong as Cantoral wrote a number of songs that were made popular years after being written. All in all Jose Jose was an amazing singer, amazing human and we all morn for his loss to this world and the impact he made to music lovers everywhere. Dios te tenga en su gloria Jose Jose.

Although ONLY the beginning of the song resembles “Tu Sina Cosa Grande”, it actually was an original song by Roberto Cantoral, a Mexican composer, and the song was representing México in a Latín American Festival in March of 1970. I hope this helps clarify some of the questions you had.
    I enjoyed your review.
    Thank you 😊

Dude, with all respect, I've heard Tu si na cosa grande and theres just like the second verse of that song that sounds a little bit similar. I think you just went with the idea of El triste being a cover/adaptation from that song and that totally ruined your "first time listening", cause this song was an original composition made for this show, it was called "The OTI" and lots of countries participate in it. Unfortunately, even if Jose Jose's performance was so outstanding, it placed 3rd, not even won the 1st price. :'(

  •  5 ปีที่แล้ว

I am glad that you are "discovering" this Mexican national treasure and cultural and artistic proud, a prodigious voice as their colleagues said at that moment. A little late, but... I have to say to you that José José, our "Prince of Song" in México, was the son of a tenor and vocal coach of many important Mexican singers in those years, and his mom was a piano concert player. This precise theme was sung by him at the most important Hispano-American contest for more than 20 years, OTI Festival, pull him not only to fame but to universality. Was his first performance in a more professional way, but also the beginning of his doom. In the video, it is possible to watch the astonishing and wonder of famous and very important colleagues at that moment, like our "Diamond" Marco Antonio Muñiz or our "Bride of Mexico" Angélica María. Their faces say everything. I still remember that performance as yesterday. This other one was his last performance, hear the voice. Even the drugs and alcohol destroyed him, his proud and dignity singing was a living example to many people around the world. th-cam.com/video/TNWp05sKFTQ/w-d-xo.html. From Mexico to the world and forever. Long live to the Prince of Song. By the way, the surname Prince of Song started that day also, because his clothes and presence, and was created by the great Cuban singer (present among the audience then) Olga Guillot. She was also his Fairy Godmother.
I also watched your reaction to "Amar y Querer" and I have to say that, even in that period José José was completely submerged in drugs, he was so disciplined to keep that amazing voice and quality that could be the envy to many deaf singers and musicians today too concentrated in the rhythm and loud.
On the other hand, it is so sad that new artists are so... I do not how to say to not sound offensive... without memory that can't see what is going on outside the modern tendencies and where they come.
And, about your comment related to Domenico Modugno, "Tu si na cosa grande pe me" (th-cam.com/video/tkBdvDdE_lU/w-d-xo.html), I had 7 years old then and José José had 22 years old, so belive me those are two very different songs and compositions, but... I remember that, just in those 70s and until the 80s there was a strong discussion, because the similarity of compositions, French, Italian and Latin American, was common, until the norm was determined internationally, if two songs present more than 15 measures equal, similar or identical, it is enough to declare plagiarism to the second. Perhaps "El Triste" was saved by a hair of demand. I remember also, that was one of the alleged reasons because the song didn't win the international contest, but winning the third prize.
To help you to understand the history of this song I share with you this video, among other similar: th-cam.com/video/-bvIqwGni7w/w-d-xo.html

When you were talking about the melodrama of the lyrics "Without each other we are bound to disappear!" I was laughing so hard I nearly spilled my coffee. So, so true! But you have to admit Jose Jose emotes this very beautifully :) It's sad because today this kind of emotion in music is sorely lacking.
Long live the 70s! RIP Jose Jose. In Mexico he was known as "El Príncipe." Thank you for the enlightening commentary, Frank!

The silly face that makes the "best romantic voice of Mexico" of that time is very relevant, it's like the king is listening to God Himself. It's like "I am the best voice, but now already know I am nothing". It's tremendous.

One good day in 1973, American singer Frank Sinatra got engaged in his Reprise Records offices in Los Angeles, California, when he heard José José in ambient music. He immediately asked to find the Mexican singer.
Sinatra wanted to record an album with "Prince of the Song" on Reprise Records. José José, accepted immediately, but the duet did not materialize.
The reason: José José had a contract as an exclusive artist of RCA Víctor and the company prevented him from recording that album on Reprise Records.
According to the autobiographical book of the singer "This is my life", the situation led him to depression and drinking alcohol for weeks, while listening to Sinatra's records.
But Sinatra did not cease to be professionally interested in the Mexican singer. Four years later, he traveled to the border city of Tijuana, in Baja California, to see José José at the Flamingos nightclub

Roberto Cantoral composed the song "the sad" after the death of his mother, in which he recounts the pain of losing his greatest love, that love that makes him feel complete, after the absence, distance and separation, How sad was to say goodbye
    When we worshiped more
    Until the swallow emigro
    Heralding the end.
How sad everything looks without you
The seas of the beaches go away
The colors of gray are dyed
    Today everything is loneliness.
I don't know, if I see you again later,
I don't know what my life will be
Without the blue star of your being,
    That doesn't light me anymore,
Today I want to taste my pain ...
No, I ask for compassion and mercy
The story of this love was written for eternity.
How sad, everyone says that I am
    I'm always talking about you
They don't know that, thinking of your love, your love
I have been able to help myself to live, I have been able to help myself to live.
Today I want to taste my pain, no, I ask for compassion and mercy
The story of this love was written for eternity,
How sad everyone says that I am
    I'm always talking about you
They don't know that, thinking of your love in your love,
I have been able to help myself to live, I have been able to help myself to live,
I have been able to help myself to live.
