  • Welcome to the Friday Feature powered by H&H Classics...
    www.handh.co.uk/
It's time for some more ZCars madness. Last year we met my mate Dave and his incredible Honda Civic Type R powered Classic Mini ( • EPIC Civic Type R VTEC... . Today he has brought me two very special Fiat 500s from ZCars. In this first part we experience the totally bonkers 'Fiabusa'. A classic Fiat 500 powered by a 1340cc Hayabusa bike engine with 197 horsepower and a 11,000 RPM redline ! Part 2 will be the Fubaru !!
Amazing engineering, stunning to look at but honestly one of the most challenging cars I have ever driven. There is a real knack to the gearbox but once you have it, the changes are sweet and boy is it rapid !

Awesome machines and incredible skills to build those dream cars! I bought a Fiat128 from 1983 to restore and make it look nice to drive in a daily basis (and maybe add some nice ideas), but things like this are just way out of my budget and skills!

One thing about the Hayabusa engine is that it is a super long stroke engine, with a TON of low end torque. Liter bikes generally have a 2.0 inch stroke, compared to 2.56 inches for the Haybusa 2nd and 3rd generation engine. That's 50.9mm for the 2022 Yamaha R1 vs. 65mm for the 2008 and up Hayabusa engine. The longer stroke makes the Hayabusa engine into a totally usable car engine, with a ton of torque starting right around 3,000 rpms. There aren't many motorcycle engines that can revv as high, but also retain that level of low end torque.

You'll probably find that giving the throttle a little blip on the downshifts and just fan the clutch will make them smooth with no clunking/crunching. 35 years on bikes here and that's how you handle a constant speed motorcycle gearbox.

      Oh my...poor little gearbox!
Sure, when you are pushing it and shifting up near 10k rpms it's completely fine without a clutch.
But downshifting without a clutch? What did that poor gearbox did to you to torture it like that? You need clutch and throttle blip when downshifting with motorcycle gearbox!
Also when you are doing it right, you don't need to bang that stick with such force, it should be smooth.
Those car guys ;-) Obviously this car should be banned without previous motorcycle experience :-)

This gave me flashbacks to my bonkers MK Indy (Lotus 7 style kit car) with Hyabusa engine and gearbox, which weighed around 450kg. The sequential box takes some getting used to, mine didn't have a reverse gear though, or roof or windscreen, so a full face helmet was required.......3 seconds 0 to 60 though ;)
I also had a classic mini with a Yamaha R1 engine in the back, it used an electric switch connected to a starter motor for a reverse gear....which I broke on its first outing. That reverse gear solution looks much better, and stronger.

Heehee! That thing is epic !!!!! And also heehee, yes, I use to change gear like that on my Yamaha RD350LC back in '81. And, actually, it was possible to knock it into neutral quickly on the way down the box, without the clutch, then blip it and engage the next gear down, also without the clutch! But let's just say, it wasn't advised!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been into bikes for years and have owned a few. This little 500 with the gen 2 'busa engine is a wonderful piece of engineering. Your smiles in the car say it all really.
I'll definitely be checking out more of Z Cars' content (and your own). I'm now subscribed to your channel and am looking forward to checking other videos. Next will be the white Fubaru.
    Very nicely presented video 👍

Downshifting without using the clutch is actually not a bit deal. I had just 3-4 strands left on the clutch cable of my CBR1000RR and had to get us 300 miles to my replacement cable. As you say, shifting up is not a problem. Downshifting, if you match the revs properly, is just as smooth. And yes, I did make it all the way to where my new clutch cable was waiting for me.

Took me a few moments to recognise them but these are the roads I use to travel from Chichester to Pulborough a couple of times a week. It's really cool to see this kind of content being filmed so close to home. The 'Fiabusa' is awesome and would love to see it in person at some point, or maybe even give the guy a race on my Hornet 😉 aha. Great video mate, you have a new subscriber here & I look forward to seeing what you put out next 👍
