@@jackbennett2269 Oh, interesting! Like Tim wanting this relationship, but the narrator can't accept it because they're both men, and so the narrator is wishing Tim was born a girl instead of appreciating Tim for who he actually is

The narrator walking away from the table while the spaghetti is left sitting there is really heartbreaking, because it shows he understands the relationship is never happening, yet his feelings still remain. I think we’ve all been there tbh.

This is what true love is: lying in bed being dumb, having spaghetti, taking the day off work when they’re sick, getting engaged Why can’t we love our homies as they are, as we are? This was done really well btw! 😍
Nope. Love is taking care and responsability of the relationship, for good and bad, and not just some pre-teenager sh1t. I really love this video :> I also really love this song so I've seen a whole bunch of different versions of videos + animations of it and I think this one hits at a different feeling than the other ones. The animations I've seen of this usually depicts the two people as guys and plays into the very twee and cutesy, homey atmosphere described in the singer's thoughts, eventually concluding in the two guys realising they like each other. Similar to this video, 'Tim' is never actually depicted as a girl because the whole point of the song is that the singer doesn't actually want Tim to be one but wants to justify their confused feelings towards him. This type of video ends in a very cutesy and nice way. One older video I saw was of a guy (not Of Montreal) singing this live to an audience and they basically were just laughing all the way through at it, thinking it's a joke, which in a meta way kinda links to the singer's view: this audience, at the time, saw an actual gay relationship as entirely outside of the realm of possibility (like the singer does). While the singer rationalises this contrast between their worldview and their feelings by imagining Tim as a girl, the audience rationalises it as a ridiculous joke. It was quite depressing to watch Another music video basically interpreted the song way too literally and depicted Tim as an actual girl and was basically about how the singer was weird and how their desire for that relationship was ultimately weird, implying this by depicting Tim as bored and kinda disgusted by the singer. You could really feel the complete lack of empathy the TH-camr had for the original song and it was also depressing in its own way But this video hits on something different!! As other commenters have said, I also think it's about unrequited love and the way you visually convey the separation between the singer and Tim (which none of these other videos have done), alongside Tim's blank + bored expression is really powerful. I especially like this part between 0:45 and 0:48 where in each shot when it comes back to your character looking more and more towards the floor, as if they're starting to realise that this fantasy won't come true. uhh my apologies for the essay and also how clunky it is (i wrote it in a rush lol) but thank you for making this video! it's great :3

This is epic and reminds me of TMBG or Dead Milkmen in some bizarre current folksy thing that just has me put it on repeat over and over again ... Also, the many tribute videos and art/cartoons made for this song are amazing ... Obviously sweeping our social cerebellum ... Bravo!!!
holy shit i’m early but i wanted to say the editing on this is absolutely stellar, you hit every beat/strum perfectly dude, and the lighting for a lot of these shots is stellar!! also i love the magik poster at 0:19 lol
I listen to this song all the time and didn’t know there was a music video!:D keep up the good work my guy !!x
0:41 spittin bars
Perfect video for this song, the settings all feel very intimate and personal and the cuts between the two characters fit both the music and lyrics.
I love this, it feels like an old TH-cam video in the best way possible
The dimmer colours, the thrown away spaghetti , the way he stopped fidgeting,
I think I’m gonna go bawl rq
I’m getting nostalgia hearing this song after so long lol
happy pride month!! absolutely wonderful video - equal parts heartbreaking. 10/10 work. both you look really good too. banger song.
the visuals are so damn good. i will never get sick of this song
Amazing work. Love everything about this.
i’ve had this song stuck in my head for days without opening youtube, and the first thing on my recommended was this when i opened yt!! awesome video!
This is so cute. It sounds like a song I would’ve heard in 2004-08 from an indie band. ❤
This is such an absolutely perfect visual respresentation of the tone behind this song!! Amazing work ❤
the shots on this were insane i loved the way you portrayed this story
I love the editing style and the fact that you used one of my favourite songs! Can´t wait for more videos like this!!
I've seen other takes on this song as a music video but this one really hit well! good job on this, i really like how you had the camera split the "characters" up throughout, like splitting reality from fantasy.
This just randomly appearing makes youtube have to recommend this years later.
THIS SONG MEANS THE WORLD TO ME!!! its like that other video of this song!!!!
This video is really well made, it captures the feeling so well
As someone named Tim this is odd and even odder that it was on my home page
this song genuinely hits so hard thank you for making this
This feels like an allegory for my internalized homophobia before I came out as bisexual. This speaks to me on such a personal level. It genuinely nakes me tear up. This is so beautiful.
Same
In turn I have been on the receiving end of this. Its messed with ne heavily.
@@deezboyeed6764 what do you mean
@Saturnlock the phrase 'I wish you were a girl' or 'wish you were born a girl' has been said to me multiple times by a few different guys over the year. Its honestly had a terrible effect on my mental health
@@deezboyeed6764 Ah, I see. Yeah, that's pretty gross. I would never do that to someone.
That kind of music video that you nee to watch for a couple of times. You're amazing guys
this is so beautiful
I LOVE THE OF MONTREAL AND THIS VISUAL VIDEO SO MUCHHH
Absolutely crisp camerawork.
gorgeous... really really well done im cryin here
NOOOOOOOOOO THE END WAS SO SAD NOOOOO 😭
this is one of my favorite songs and now this is gonna be my favorite video. i really loved it!! the spaghetti being thrown out at the end kinda hurt a bit, i could just feel the rejection. and the hopeless that y'all managed to show in visuals was amazing. the constant switching between and not showing both guys at the same time up until the rejection had me feeling the distance between tim and the singer. amazing!!
God this music video is less than 2 minutes long and I teared up a little at the implications because of how many times I've been through this with my straight friends.
