- The David Gilmour Guitar Collection totalled $21.5 million in New York on 20 June 2019, with bidders from all over the world competing to buy guitars from the personal collection of the Pink Floyd singer and songwriter.
The legendary ‘Black Strat’, which was integral to the recording of Pink Floyd albums 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' (1973), 'Wish You Were Here' (1975), 'Animals' (1977) and 'The Wall' (1979), sold for $3,975,000 - a new world record for a guitar at auction.
On the eve of the sale David Gilmour announced on social media that proceeds would be donated to the charity ClientEarth.

Comes home after a celebration dinner celebrating his new ownership of one of greatest guitars ever that he bought for 3.3 million to play smoke on the water to his family.

@@gubala7955 Then don't auction it off to super-rich guys. Gilmour should be wealthy enough that he could've and probably should've gifted it to one of his sons, or sold it privately to a phenomenal and/or important young guitarist, songwriter, etc.

And day Gilmour passes, he can double it no sweat.
This is one of the most precious and recognizable icons of modern music.
It's not an investment at all, the only reason it fetched the price it did was because it was a charity auction, if it sold again it would be worth much less unless it was another charity auction
I usually agree with the whole making more money once the person dies tactic. With the black strat I can’t agree. It’s a relic from so long ago him dying won’t make a difference as it’s already his most famous bit of kit. Not to mention by the time he does he’s only going to be more out of fashion.
I agree. When Gilmour dies, and years from now if that guy wants to sell that black Strat, it’s going to get a lot more money. Guitars themselves increase in value over the years, I can’t imagine what Gilmour’s black Strat is going to be worth 50 years from now.

WOW! What a great guitar to have, pricy, but the heritage that comes with it is awesome! I always wanted the Fender custom shop copy but that was also overpriced for my wallet so settled on building my own copy for about $1k. Still doesn't top how cool this guitar is and I hope the new owner cherishes it and it doesn't just put in the case and hidden it in storage.

The most amazing thing in all this is that the people who sold the guitar, and the woman who made the sale too, probably barely know what a guitar is; that's the most astonishing part for me.

With inflation, this guitar would've gone for 6.6 million in today's standards. A steal of a deal if you ask me. Also, the guy who bought it is the owner of the Colts and he seems like a pretty cool dude. He also owns Hunter S. Thompson's red shark convertible.
He is selling his guitars to save this planet (Climate change). A great guitar player, a great vocalist, a great composer, but above all he is the greatest human being of this planet. Long live Sir! Much love and massive respect

Could she have done that any faster? For that kinda money youd think she would slow her roll and give the bidders a chance to think about increasing their bids and raising their bids. She took 60 seconds to increase the bid 3 million dollars, if she'd spent 90 seconds taking bids, would it have hit 4 million? Very possible.

That actually made me sad. Dunno why. It's an amazing instrument, but it was Gilmore's fingers that made it sing. I hope David is OK. Hope there are no healthy issues that precipitated this.
