The actor who plays Hamlin is really great. When he's confronting Kim he's being real nasty until he hits a point of "this is too much. i can't keep covering up for Chuck". I like the characters in this show so much.

I like how he was type-cast as this slimy slick asshole kinda guy, he has that stereotypical evil guy look that everyone expects from a tv show. You know what I mean, the sorta handsome sorta mean looking blonde white guy in a well kept suit with the nasally voice, any other tv show he would just be nothing but an asshole. But in this show, he actually ends up being one of the most ethical people on the show. Shows everyone to not judge a book by it's cover.

Jimmy is the "good criminal", he does some slimey stuff but he does so to ultimately help people in trouble, and he takes care of his sick bro. Chuck is the "lawful evil", he is willing to use the law in order to stab his own brother in the back. Such a good show.

By the way, great post. I didn't put that together, but now that you did, it makes perfect sense. Chuck feels superior to Jimmy, he sees him as a lifelong loser. Jimmy with a degree was a slap in the face to Chuck; wanting to be a partner is a travesty and an embarrassment to law.

Maybe it references Jimmy but I don’t know about Chuck, yeah he’s an asshole and it seems like he’s jealous but I think he knows that Jimmy will take short cuts at some point and do illegal things, maybe we as spectators can see Jimmy trying to do the right things at the beginning, but Chuck doesn’t, besides we all know Chuck is right, slipin’ Jimmy will appear at some point. In the parking garage scene, the characters were obvious references to Grand Theft Auto V. Steven Ogg, who voices Trevor Phillips in the game and even looks like him in real life was present. The guy offering the job has an uncanny resembles to Lester Crest, who offers to do heists and stuff. Also, the names of the three protagonists of GTA V are Trevor, Michael, and Franklin. Considering that Mike is short for Michael, that also fits.
On top of that, Steven Ogg's character carries more guns that a person should realistically have, just like a video game character.

There's kind of a running theme in this whole series: those who have always taken the straight path in life to success are incapable of understanding redemption. They look down on everyone who failed, because they struggled so much to never fail, so the impossible standards they set for themselves are now things they set for everyone else. Chuck seems exactly like that in the final scene of this episode. He knows Jimmy screwed up his own life before, multiple times, and because he himself never did, Chuck can't bring himself to understand the concept of inner change. But it's still tremendously arrogant and cold-hearted to work against your own brother like that. The lack of self-awareness in Chuck's mind is really quite something.

In my opinion, this is one of the best episodes of the show. Definitely the best of the season. My favourite part is the last scene, because it solidifies Chuck as one of the best characters on the show:
    1. Michael McKean is an amazing actor. The way he portrays his mental illness is amazing. There are those tiny expressions on his face or some tiny gestures that always let us know how uncomfortable he feels around electricity. Most of us never experienced anything similar to that, but you really understand how Chuck feels. Even if Chuck puts up a brave face and claims that all the electricity is not that big of a deal, the audience understands how he really feels. And the way he delivers that final monologue of the episode is amazing. He tries to hold back in the beginning, but once he mananged to say those words: "You're not a real lawyer." The emotions just come out of him. And it doesn't just sound like the confession of an evil villain. Chuck genuinely sounds desperate and hurt.
    2. I totally understand why someone would hate Chuck. Let's be honest. This is not how you should treat your brother. The worst thing he did is how he completely ignores every improvement Jimmy has had over the last few years. We have seen Jimmy as a (mostly) honest man. Season 1 did a good job at showing us how different Jimmy is from Saul. How he refused to take over a million dollars from the Kettlemans on two occassions just because it's "the right thing". And how he actually cares about his elderly clients. But Chuck disregards this. He only sees Jimmy as Slippin' Jimmy and refuses to acknowledge that he has changed.
But try to see it from Chucks perspective. Do you have that one relative who has on multiple occassions shown that he is unable to take any responsibillity? Someone who takes shortcuts whenever possible? Who is somehow always handed everything he wants? Now admit that you don't like this guy. And now imagine that this guy has the power and the responsibillity of a lawyer. Even if that guy claims that he is now a better man, wouldn't you be sceptical? Wouldn't you think that he would eventually screw up and cause some massive damage? And if you had the power to limit that damage, wouldn't you use it? We've only seen the story from Jimmys point of view and that's why we hate Chuck. But I do understand why Chuck did what he did. I may not have done the same thing if I were in his place. I actually strongly believe that he made the wrong choice. But I do think, that Chuck is more than a guy of pure evil, even if it may look like it. I do not like Chuck as a person, but I love him as a character.
    3. On a sidenote: If you are looking for a way to represent mentally ill people in media, I think this is the way to do it. Chuck is not just part of a minority to have a more inclusive story. His mental illness directly affects the plot in numerous ways. But episodes like this one show us that he is so much more than his mental illness. In the entire section I wrote above, I did not even mention his illness. That's because he has a lot of depth as a character that goes beyond his illness. His illness just adds more depth to the relationship between Jimmy and Chuck. And even though his illness limts him, he is very capable on his own. I think this episode demonstrated this sufficiently. And thanks to Michael McKeans acting we actually get to understand someone who is so different from us.
    Edit: 📱🧀🤔

      @uoabigaillevey 5 ปีที่แล้ว

You just stated more eloquently what I commented a bit ago (well.. yours was before mine but I had not yet read any comments before posting.) I was on the verge of hating Chuck's character but I definitely understood where he was coming from and knew if the story were Chuck's and not Jimmy's I would have thought Jimmy was just a lazy jerk who lived life as if everything were free to take with no repercussions. I would have hated Jimmy too.
      Peace

    • @Erikaaaaaaaaaaaaa

The real issue with that explanation is that you are taking Chuck at his word.
"Chuck says he is only fucking over his brother for the greater good, so he must be a good person"
But here's the thing: Chuck has more reasons than that. Why do you think they showed us the flashback of Chuck and Jimmy being in the hospital with their dying mother and Chuck not telling Jimmy that her last words were "Jimmy"? Why do you think we saw that whole dinner flashback where Chuck tries to impress his wife with jokes after Jimmy makes her laugh? They show us that Chuck is jealous of Jimmy. Jealous.
You cannot analyse his actions without taking that basic fact into account. Chuck wasn't just acting out of his perception of the greater good, he was also acting on his own jealousy. His brothers success infuriates him, not just because he doesn't believe Jimmy shouldn't have any power, but because he is jealous that Jimmy has achieved so much despite, in Chuck's eyes, being lesser. The idea that Jimmy is more charismatic than him, funnier than him, more loved than him, and in some ways a better lawyer than him is something Chuck can't bear. So instead of having to face that reality, he pushes Jimmy down. Prevents him from seeing success. That way his ego is preserved. He is the better brother.

Jimmy definitely has the potential to be an awful crooked lawyer, Chuck knew that, and he certainly didn't help.

Notes from Better Call Saul Insider Podcast*
    *Episode:* Pimento
*Co-hosts* Kelley Dixon (editor); Chris McCaleb (editor)
*Guests:* Co-showrunners Vince Gilligan & Peter Gould; Jonathan Banks (Mike); Writer & Director Tom Schnauz; Michael Mando (Nacho) (I adore Michael Mando fyi)
    1. Michael discovered BrBa late, but by the time he was cast, he’d seen it all
    2. He didn’t know Mijo (the code name for Tuco) was going to be Tuco until the day before filming, that’s how secret they kept things
    3. Michael thinks Nacho actually has love & affection for Tuco.
    4. Like Rhea Seehorn, Michael went to set during shoots he wasn’t in to absorb the process & learn from other people’s work (not just actors but writers/directors/crew members/etc)
    5. Steven Ogg! Mark Proksch! (Look up Zim Zam Yo-yo man on TH-cam for some of his hilariousness)
    6. Mark Proksch had auditioned for Mr. kettleman & almost got it, but it wasn’t quite right, so they contacted him for this role.
    7. There was a jimmy flashback teaser that was cut for time. (No description - it’ll likely come up later)

    • @pearljammies
      @pearljammies 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      8. They did not think when they started that Chuck would be jealous of Jimmy, but it came in large part from the pride with which Michael McKean carries himself/plays the character. Howard was originally going to actually be the “bad guy” until they saw how the actors were playing things
      9. Similarly, Vince had pictured Jesse just as a young punk. All of his sweetness came as a result of Vince & the writers seeing what Aaron brought to the character/the Aaron that shone through
      10. Its really hard for Howard how everyone sees him (as the bad guy), but he plays the role to protect Chuck. Kim taking him to task really hurt & broke him.
      11. Characters grow & develop even when offscreen. Nacho has an earring, which tells Michael Mando he’s been making moves.
      12. Things Michael saw in Nacho in his first scenes - his intelligence (understanding how to work with Tuco, being able to alternate between talking with Saul & Jimmy, the Kettleman scheme); his dichotomy of compassion & violence; his ambition; his humanity - why does he pick jimmy? What does he see in him? He believes in jimmy before jimmy believes in himself...he sees the Saul in jimmy, and takes a risk in revealing himself to him.
      13. Vince had called Michael McKean Agra’s of time to tell him Chuck would take a dark turn. They don’t think Bob knew before getting the script. They were both so excited for their scene and worked sooo hard.

This episode is so important to the overall show, really. Mike's speech in the car is the overture of the entire series, in how he was saying that he's known good criminals and dirty cops, evil priests and honorable thieves. You can be on one side of the law and still be a good person, you are a criminal, but it doesn't necessarily define the quality of your person. Chuck is kind of right, he has a brother who he's watched take the dirty, criminal road for so long, that cuts deep, so to watch him turn around and try to become a lawyer just like him isn't about Jimmy trying to better himself in Chuck's eyes, he can't unsee Slippin' Jimmy, no matter what. Doesn't make it right, of course, he values the law and so stabs his brother in the back for past actions Jimmy can't undo. He does it with arrogance, and a sense of superiority at being a "real lawyer". That is not the action of a good man, but he's on the right side of the law. Jimmy, however, though he has been honestly trying to better himself this whole season, definitely falls under the side of the criminal. He's broken the law, still, but does that make him a bad person?

Seeing Steven Ogg was a treat, since I loved Simon (and considering there was blue meth in Merle's bag in season 2, AND Glenn was driving the red car Jr. got when he, Rick and co were leaving Atlanta, many people theorize that the two shows are in the same universe) The whole scene with Mike, "Simon", and man-mountain is one of my favorite BCS scenes, especially when Mike unloaded the gun within two seconds and throat-chopped the guy XD

I think what bothered me most with what Chuck did to Jimmy (aside from the betrayal), was the deviousness. He wanted Hamlin to appear to be the bad guy so Chuck didn’t lose his support from Jimmy at home.
But that level of betrayal and then asking your law partner and friend to take the blame, Hamlin must’ve done it to try and protect Chuck’s healthcare from Jimmy as well and was willing to be the fall guy.
I mean I get it, when you work so hard for your qualifications and career and someone manages to find their way in via a shorter pathway, it’s frustrating. But Jimmy still had to pass the same bar exam that Chuck did. He still had to know the same things and he put in the work, even if he got there quicker he’s still a legit lawyer.
    Thanks for the reaction, guys.
I really appreciate you and loved watching your faces as Mike took on Steve Ogg in such a badass way 😂 Also, Steven Ogg voices one of the main characters in Grand Theft Auto 5 (Before TWD and BCS) just in case you wanted to know for your gaming channel. He was also very caring towards Chuck, helping him with the everyday routine. This was the point where he started to go back to being Slippin' Jimmy because Chuck made him feel less than. Chuck has some points here, but he never believed Jimmy regarding that he really did change. It was very judgemental and unfair to not let Jimmy work at HHM. It's fucked up because Jimmy has done so much to make up for his past and prove himself to Chuck and Chuck can't see past anything but Jimmy's past.
