I loved this book. I also read Paradise which I am sure you would love it too. It is rich in African life and history.

What a treat to have three favorite booktubers in one video and I so enjoyed your discussion having read and enjoyed it alongside you all. I appreciated Gurnah’s simple writing and found his characters engaging. I too knew nothing about Germany’s colonial past and African involvement in World War II. I’m with Roz on the ending though, too abrupt and not fleshed out. Looking forward to reading more Gurnah though. Incidentally, did you think there was some definite gay tension around Hamza and his commanding officers, that they were attracted to him and hid it by ridiculing him in the case of the Feldwobel?

Oh yes there was a lot of homoeroticism in that part!
