Thanks for posting this. Now I know I can just blast the unit with brake cleaner or the like and lube lightly later and not fuss with ripping it apart. Your effort was worthy indeed. My XL 650 is one of the first run or so. PIcked it up in 1994 or so at a gun show in Houston. mine has no grease zerks anywhere. Only used it a couple years in mid 90's then had to put it up as I got out of shooting so much. Past year it is back in production.
I have a 2019 XL650 and all this can be done with a open end wrench and allen wrench. That c-clip is not part of the punch anymore they put a allen head screw in the back of the punch pin and a screw holds the washer in place. Super easy to change.
This primer punch is the only big gripe I have with the XL650. A bear to change (Dillon says take the plastic shellplate advance cam off the right hand side of the press to help with the changeout, which I regard as absurd, I use a modified 9/16" wrench) which only adds to the complexity of the XL650 changeover. I have read claims by people they can change calibers in only 15 minutes. My response to that is, not if they're human beings. Always ensure that the primer punch and the threads in the press are clean, and that it is FULLY screwed in.
Vary nice presentation! I would like to know how to keep the plug flush at all times. Mine gets loose and comes down to low causing my primmer disc to Jam. Then I have to take the plug out and try to tighten it again until flush. Why will it not stay put? For one thing you can not put two wrenches on it, you have to use a pliers. Well that nars everything up. And call Dillon? I'm sick of calling them. Just about all the parts on my press have been replaced already. I don't like to wait. And by the way, this seater plug is brand new. So come on Dillon, my old plug worked better then the one you just sent me. I guess I will get the welder out, HA! HA!
