    Great idea. If I wanted to build a 4 storey residential block, less concrete for foundations and walls. Not sure how I would add floors, but I expect it could be done under high tension with rods. How we scale up is the problem. Pioneering designers are looking to build down, especially for commercial properties. I expect many current commercial properties will change to residential, especially as home working is becoming more popular. I could use this concept to build a warehouse or large farm building. Do we need more sheep? What other natural materials could be used?

    Great. Now get a group of guys without high school diplomas and grade 9 math to set that up. Architects spend so much time finding solutions to the wrong problems, apparently even when they’re doing engineering. They’re damn good at selling their ideas though.
    To be more specific, this is such a niche solution to a non-problem. People don’t live in fancy curved structures. The most efficient (and liveable) floor plans are based on right angles. If we’re concerned with constructing buildings to house large numbers of people, then this method isn’t a solution to that problem.
    Prefab concrete that can simply be raised on-site is a much better solution for the stated problem. Creating new materials, with less of a carbon footprint and which can also be prefabbed is another (better imo) solution to the problems outlined at the beginning. There’s a disconnect between the beginning and end of this talk. This technology doesn’t address the need that is given as the motivation. Sure, it’s cool, but it’s also fanciful and unnecessarily extravagant.
    Notice how she stopped talking about practicalities after the introduction? The end was about the feel of the fabric, the way the sun shines on it, how you can lean against it. But it wasn’t a home. It was an art piece.

    • @angrytedtalks
      @angrytedtalks 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      She started talking about climate change like it was a problem for architecture. You are quite right, what she has shown is pretty, but irrelevant.

  • @paulstone7655
    @paulstone7655 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    At first glance this is just not practical when it comes to speed of construction (i.e. dome = nightmare for builders etc), and efficiency of space (i.e. you can't stack them for several stories, there's awkward/redundant gaps especially towards the ceiling etc).

    • @joannot6706
      @joannot6706 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      3d printing can't do concrete over hang because of the softness and drying time of concrete.
      Calatrava would love this, him who loves cantilevered structures.

  • @raynic1173
    @raynic1173 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just a little critical thinking here: interesting but....
    -Slow down, most concrete forms used now a days are NOT thrown out after each use. Some are in odd specialty one off structures, but even then, as many reusable sections are used as possible.
    -So this structure is good for what a cool looking shed in your back yard? A cool studio for one? Form/function?
    - you need multi story structures, that highly complicates this concept if even possible.
    -nice college concept project, but what are the real world uses?

  • @cutieb00tie
    @cutieb00tie 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I mean, I'm not an engineer or a architect, but how are you suppose to repair it? Because if I understand it right it would be exposed to environment, which means different weather or if only inside where exposed, high moisture in the kitchen or bathroom.
    Imo it's a step in right direction, but it is not the solution we should stick with. A good start will be to build what we already got technology for, like using old bricks from other no longer in use buildings to build new houses. Not only you have to do less (I think), but also it doesn't require a specific shape to be build properly.
    In conclusion I'm interested in finding new eco friendly material for building, but I don't think this one at the moment is any solution to this problem.

    No. Climate change is NOT predominantly down to greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, climate change is neither stoppable or bad.
    Innovative architecture is a lovely idea, but nothing to do with climate, unless you are weather proofing buildings.
    Air conditioning, flood proofing and light shading/filtering; all architecture helping with climate change management.

    • @angrytedtalks
      @angrytedtalks 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the project was to stop climate change she is a money sponge. We can't stop climate change and the only roles of architecture in climate management is shade, air con, insulation and storm protection. Not pretty, bendy, complicated shapes. Architecture is apparently an art, of no functional value to humanity, only aesthetic.
